Softpedia Editor's Review for Video Memory stress Test

An application that performs different benchmarks on your system

Written by Bogdan Popa on December 16th, 2011

Video Memory stress Test is a handy software solution that promises to lend you a hand when it comes to putting the computer to test after overclocking, thus helping you detect problems in an easy way.

Although we're more or less used to very complex applications every time we hear about benchmarking, Video Memory stress Test has been designed to be user friendly, so it caters to the needs of both beginners and experienced users.

There's just a single window that hosts all the information and the buttons, so you will see a special panel with information, including total and used memory, device name and video mode, but also a bunch of real-time statistics that will be displayed while performing benchmarks.

There are three test types (DirectX, CUDA and OpenGL), three test sets (full, express 15% and full) plus a number of options such as to ignore colors bit mask and use onscreen buffer.

You can also choose the surfaces size, whether to beep if any errors are found, to perform a continuous test or not and to log errors.

It's pretty much obvious that your computer will be seriously stressed up after pressing the “Start” button, and keep in mind that it's mandatory to avoid doing anything else on the machine while the tests are under way.

A full test takes around 30 minutes, with 254 stages to be completed, so make sure you have some spare time before starting a new test.

The thing we liked the most was definitely the way the app interacts with the user, as it relies on a plain-looking interface with intuitive buttons and just a few configuration options, a very useful thing especially for beginners. On the other hand, we missed a help manual and novices will most likely need one, so they are more or less on their own.

All in all, Video Memory stress Test is a must try, especially because it's being delivered as a very light package and comes with a freeware license. A few improvements here and there and we'll definitely get a top product.
