Windows gives you the possibility to search for files of interest in several ways. There’s the dedicated utility, which may not appeal to everyone, as well as the search field in file explorer. However, it can take time to index all locations or even find your file, in which case, alternatives like File Search might be of more help.

There’s one thing you need to do before installing the application, and that’s checking if .NET Framework is installed on your computer, because it’s a required component for functionality. When launched, the main window shows up, with the possibility to minimize it to the tray area to have it at hand to quickly look up items of interest at any moment.

Unfortunately, the main window can’t be brought up through hotkeys from the tray area, but you can manually configure a trigger hotkey for the application itself from the default properties panel of the shortcut, if you really need to have it at your fingertips.

The main window lets you quickly accommodate, with its simplistic design, and fresh look, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. The location field is fitted with several important locations, such as the desktop, documents, or program files. However, you need to manually write down the whole path of a custom location, because of the lack of a browse function, and there’s no option to save it for later use.

You can either initiate a search process for a file name, or by its extension. Results are instantly retrieved, shown in a list by their name. Sadly, you need to be sure the file is in that particular folder, because the application can’t look in subdirectories. Items can be directly launched through double click, with no option to jump to its location.

Bottom line is that you can skip a search process by keeping your workspace organized. Otherwise, deciding to rely on File Search might not be the best idea, since it can create more frustration than actually helping. Just adding a target directory can take a lot of time, and the overall process might quickly make you look for alternatives.
