MD5Sum is a small-sized and portable piece of software that you can use to find out the MD5 hash of any file, regardless of its type. It also integrates a function for comparing it with the signature of another file, in order to find out whether the two are identical or not.
The tool comes packed with just the essential options for performing this task, so those looking for rich features should resort to something else.
As installation is not required, you can put the program files anywhere on the hard disk and launch the executable file immediately. It's also possible to save MD5Sum to a pen drive or other removable storage unit, in order to directly run it on any PC with minimum effort and no previous installers.
An important aspect worth taking into account is that the Windows registry and Start menu do not get updated with new entries, and no extra files are created on the disk, leaving it clean after removal.
Simple interface and options
The GUI is represented by a regular window with a plain and simple structure, where you can point out the two files using the file browser, since the drag-and-drop method is not supported. Alternatively, you can paste MD5 signatures from the Clipboard. Their MD5 checksums are immediately calculated and shown in the main frame, along with the comparison status. There are no other noteworthy options available here.
Evaluation and conclusion
There were no kind of issues in our tests, since MD5Sum did not hang, crash or pop up error messages. It has a good response time and minimal impact on PC performance, since it runs on low CPU and RAM. Although it does not integrate rich features, MD5Sum delivers a fast and effective solution to finding out and comparing MD5 hashes.
