Servant Salamander Free
Servant Salamander Free is the cost-free version of the Altap Salamander file manager, released a few years ago. While the latter evolved into a reliable and comprehensive application, Servant Salamander Free maintained a basic feature set that enables you to explore the contents of your computer within a user-friendly interface.
The GUI in split into two separate panes, which facilitates the transfer of files from one location to another and allows easy file comparison. Other than that, the main window is simple and all the options are reachable using the application's menus.
Changing the drive in the left or the right pane is also done via the designated menus, which some can find quite inconvenient. Also, there are options for filtering the drive contents and sorting files by various criteria, such as name, type (extension), size and creation date.
What we found to be really annoying is the fact that the drive content is not automatically refreshed after you copy or move files. In order to update the content of a drive, you must use the dedicated option in the menus.
Directories and files can be easily renamed and you can even change the case of the existing file names in a folder and its sub-folders. New text documents can be created with a single click and files can be easily erased, moved, copied or compressed. Also, you can modify the attributes of a file and modify its creation date and time.
The application can easily calculate the available and the occupied space on the disk and show you detailed information about a drive. It bundles a tool dedicated to comparing the content of two different directories and search options to help you easily find what you want.
Aside from the two-paned interface, there is nothing that Servant Salamander Free brings to the table to exceed the capabilities of Windows Explorer. Its feature set cannot be compared to that of Altap Salamander, but this is understandable since you can use it free of charge.
