The program can be useful when you have a large number of pictures (for example) that you want to rename with a convention (for example pict0001.jpg, pict0002.jpg). It can be useful, too, when you publish files on Internet and the filenames have to be in lower cases. Imagine, too, that you send pictures by mail and that these pictures had to be named with system's date.
With the file attribute changer, it can be a very useful program for anyone using a CD recorder.
The problem is that when you burn a data file onto a CD its attribute is set to read-only. Thus when you copy the file back to the hard disk you suddenly have something different, which you can't modify or edit without fixing first, and of course with unpredictable effects in a program.
THE Rename can find, for you, files who's names are greater than 64 characters, this is, too, very useful if you are using a CD recorder. You can also rename files under some conditions. For example, rename files only if their size is greater than 1 Mo, or rename files only if they are older than 2 days.
If you are listening many music files, like MP3, VQF, OGG and WMA files, you can use THE Rename to make file names more significative and to generate HTML reports including information about their internal tags.
About MP3 files, THE Rename fully support MP3 files with id3v2 tags, tags that you can preview in a browser while you are selecting your files. THE Rename can use older tags if the new tags are not present in the file. THE Rename can also preview tags from Ogg and Vqf files. With all musical files, THE Rename can export tags for you in a file.
You can organize your pictures by renaming them and by including their width and height, you can also preview them in a window, resized, and in full size. You can also print them, copy them to the clipboard or set a particular picture as your windows background. You can browse from picture to picture with the arrow keys. You can use and extract tags included inside your pictures (in the EXIF format).
The program can be useful to organize your files. For example, if you have a folder with many files, you can automatically create folders with, for example, the first letter of each file and ask the program to move files in those folders. Everything, from the creation of folders to the copy will me done automatically by the program.
With its Caddy system, you can make multiple copy and/or cut (from different folders) and paste files when you want and in as many folders as you want (you can aslo keep files in the bin for a further use). You can see the Caddy as a place wher you can put what you want in it and do what you want with it. You can also use the program to copy, in one pass, multiple files in multiple folders.
THE Rename can copy files path to the clipboard, including only prefix or only extension or only path or the full name. This application can help you replace the prefix of your files with the file's content or call the program from Windows Explorer with a right click.
If you need to change files dates and times, use this program, you will be enable to select a date for your files and even ask the program to, for example, add 2 days to each file's date. If you want to change the date and time of photos you have made with your digital camera, THE Rename can use the date and time included inside your picture to change its date and time (EXIF tags).
If you are an expert, you can rename files with regular expressions. You can give the program a list of folders to create in the current folder and it will create them. If you know how it is boring and long under windows to create many folders, you will apreciate this. You can also create folders with counters. For example, the program can make, for you, Folder1, Folder2, Folder3 ... until Folder9 for example.
You can use this program to see the EXIF tags inside your pictures, you can then use them to rename your files and you can even export them to a text file.
