If you’re a very security/privacy-oriented user, you might have heard about VirusTotal, an online virus scanning service that integrates over 60 world-renowned antivirus solutions (and various other tools) and aims to help make the Internet a much safer place for everybody by allowing just about anyone to quickly analyze files and URLs and even IP addresses.
Over the years, the team behind VirusTotal has developed various more user-oriented tools towards achieving that end such as VTchromizer and VTZilla which have ultimately been subsequently merged into one super-tool called VT4Browsers.
For starters, it’s worth noting that VT4Browsers is a cross-browser extension compatible with both Firefox and Chrome.
It includes various important changes with respect to the other two aforementioned tools, while still maintaining some of the fundamental features that made them great including user accessibility, lots of configurations options, and security.
In the case of Chrome, it’s not surprising that the extension can be deployed on your favorite browser directly from the Chrome Web Store with just a few mouse clicks, and it works straight out of the box without much user interaction on your part.
The extension makes it extremely convenient for its users to scan downloads and download URLs. As mentioned before, configurability was one of the main focus points of the team behind the tool, hence, you can partially customize how VT4Browsers sends files and URLs to VirusTotal.
For example, by clicking the extension’s icon, you can effortlessly set up the tool to pause downloads when sending files to VirusTotal, to ignore documents such as documents or PDFs, as well as to show or hide the “Send to VirusTotal” prompt when downloading them.
The extension integrates nicely with Chrome’s UI, meaning that you can send any file, URL, or hash directly to VirusTotal via the context menu by simply using the right-click button.
To conclude, VT4Browsers picks off where its predecessors have left off continuing the legacy that the team behind VirusTotal has long since offered their user base – that of building a bigger and stronger security community online and ultimately improving the security and AV industries in the online field.
