If you prefer command-line applications to the graphical interface, then you might be interested in finding out how fast are commands being processed by your operating system. By identifying speed-related issues, perhaps you could find way to solve them and get CLI tools to run faster.
GS TIMER is a small-sized and easy-to-use command-line program designed for this very purpose. It measures the length of time needed by operations to be carried out via the console and can automatically save this information to file.
Installation isn't necessary, you can run the tool as soon as you download the executable file. Since it's portable, a big advantage is that GS TIMER can be saved to a USB flash drive, carried with you, and launched on any PC without installation.
If you run the process without specifying any switches, then the program returns the started time and date of the operation straight to the console. It also creates a plain text document with this value, placing it in the same directory as itself. The syntax is TIMER [/et] [/n] [/nologo] [/q] [/r] [/reset] [/s] [/sw].
It's possible to show the current date and time after stopping the timer (/et), show the elapsed time in hh:mm:ss.uu format (/n), delete all existing start time (/reset), or switch to stopwatch mode in order to stop the timer whenever a key is pressed (/sw).
The tool is capable of reporting the elapsed time without stopping the timer (/r), hiding the title banner (/nologo), as well as not reporting the current time when starting the timer by enabling quiet mode (/q). Nesting is supported.
It worked smoothly on Windows 10 in our tests and had minimal impact on the system's performance. All aspects considered, GS TIMER offers a simple solution for learning how fast command-line operations are being made by your computer.
