Phishing is a rather new technique of trying to obtain personal information (like usernames, PINs or credit card data) by sending emails that seem to be legit.
These e-mails appear to come from trustworthy sources such as banks, PayPal or eBay, and require users to update their data or perform transactions following a certain URL.
Anti-phishing tools can detect that URLs actually link to a fake website that resembles the real one, and they will block it, while also notifying the user that the web domain was created with the sole purpose to steal sensitive user data.
Security applications that also provide anti-phishing protection verify the emails' sources, then warn the user of their credibility.
