NFO format got its name as a contraction from information and is the format used by Microsoft for extracting system info and identifying issues.

In addition, this file format is also used by ASCII or extended ASCII text files that are frequently packaged together with pirated applications because they contain credits to the ones who hacked the software (usually pseudonyms are listed).

Since it is quite a simple format, NFO can be opened by most text processing utilities.

However, there are some NFO files which can only be accessed by specialized tools.
