Matroska format, also known as MKV, got its name from the Russian nesting dolls (called matryoshka) because it is a container format which can store numerous audio, video, graphic and subtitle tracks within one file.
MKV resembles AVI, ASF, MOV or MP4, but its is a completely open format. It is meant to be used for distributing common multimedia content, such as television shows and movies.
However, despite its open source characteristics, not all video players support this format due to its complex components.
MKV players will typically display the video in high-definition, preserving all the settings of the video.
