Trojans are a distinct type of malware, and they function as the trojan horse of the Greek mythology: they get installed on a computer, then create an access point to an external server.
There are several ways of getting a trojan installed on a PC: as part of a software application, from an infected website or as an email attachment.
A trojan will allow its creator to use the accessed computer as if it was its owner, therefore allowing actions such as keystroke and desktop monitoring, screen locking, file accessing or even crashing the system.
Most of the available security software solutions now provide trojan detection and removal, but it is hard to detect all the damages a trojan has caused since it got installed.
