WHOIS is a query/answer protocol largely used for finding out information about a certain domain name or IP address.
This response can be obtained by simply entering a domain name in a dedicated WHOIS search engine or desktop application.
WHOIS clients will display the name, address and phone number of the owner or administrator of the given domain (if they are public information).
Desktop software performing WHOIS queries can also help users to find out if a specific domain is registered or if it is available.
