Optical text recognition (OCR) has gotten better over the years and can now be used reliably for all manner of workflows. Of course, not all software is made equal, and the same holds true for OCR programs: picking the right one for the job can be more difficult than it initially appears.

ABBYY Screenshot Reader promises to deliver a reliable text recognition performance, being capable of quickly capturing text and tables from any image, which you’ll then be able to edit and export in a format of your choice.

The program certainly wastes no time getting to the good part: making use of the OCR itself. Upon installing and going through the fairly quick registration process, users can start “reading” their screenshots in a jiffy.

To begin, the default options do a good enough job to get your feet on the ground. You can capture any area on your screen and the app will work to recognize any text that appears therein. While this works well, it’s good to know that the app gives you some leeway in terms of capturing your content.

Selecting the area you wish to capture is a more universal setting, but you can also opt to capture a certain window’s contents. What’s more, the possibility of capturing your entire screen is likewise available, either instantly or on a 5-second timer. It would have been nice to have the timer available for the other modes, too, because you never know when you might need something like that.

Selecting the appropriate language for your captures is also worth doing. The program supports a wide variety of languages, so you’ll likely find what you need: use Autoselect if you work with multiple languages.

There are more than a few options when it comes to exporting your result. Captured text or tables can be sent to the clipboard or saved as a file, but capturing images is also a possibility.

ABBYY Screenshot Reader has a rather self-explanatory name: it is able to read your screenshots and export any text found in them with precision. The performance was satisfactory, but as is often the case with OCR programs, text formatting can be hit or miss, so ensure you reformat your stuff before using it somewhere.
