Fab's AutoBackup Changelog

What's new in Fab's AutoBackup 7.13.2 Build 6430

Feb 5, 2024
  • Added:
  • It is now possible to get the program automatically updated when used from the command line by adding /AUTOUPDATE switch in the command line. Command line builder now haves an optional check box for that.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Sometimes, the program did not keep the "backup in sub folder" setting.
  • Network paths validity test at backup is removed from code since it could sometimes make the "next" button grayed out even if network path existed. Since such paths are not used by unexperienced users, removing such a test feature should not be a problem.
  • When the Nirsoft zip files were 0kb (because of corrupted downloads maybe), the program could hang when trying to use them. Now, if there is such an empty Nirsoft zip file, the program will delete it. Then, it will be easy to download a new one again by clicking its box on the program's interface.
  • Updater tool could return an empty downloads list. If you see that an update is available but get an empty list, then please get latest full package from your orders history of your store account.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.13.1 Build 6308 (Nov 24, 2023)

  • The link to get update from the program's interface was not working if an update was available.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.13.1 Build 6277 (Nov 17, 2023)

  • Minor cosmetic bug fixes.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.13.0 Build 6234 (Oct 18, 2023)

  • Required script to restore desktop icons layout could not be created if user profile was created from the program because of a missing folder. This folder creation is now enforced so this problem will not happen again.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.13.0 Build 6227 (Oct 10, 2023)

  • Added:
  • Desktop icons layout is now supported. Note: this feature is tied to screen resolution so, if it has changed between source and target systems, Windows will rearrange icons by itself regardless of transferred settings.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • There could be access permissions issues when backing up to a NTFS drive root without setting a sub folder and not running then program with administrator privileges. Because of this, the program could not write the "backup.conf" file needed to restore data.
  • Updater tool seemed to be stuck at downloading languages files when download process was finished even if there was no issue.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.12.5 Build 6131 (Jul 31, 2023)

  • When typing backup destination path, if it did not exist, the program would let user go further. Now, it will just check if destination drive or network share exists, then unlock the "next" button. If destination path is writable, the specified subfolder will be created on the fly.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.12.4 Build 6099 (May 25, 2023)

  • It was not possible to set a backup scheduled task with the Command Line Builder tool when there was more than one additional folder, additional file or excluded folder selected. Windows task scheduler did not allow the separation characters pattern used between those items paths. A new pattern is used instead now and it addresses this issue. Backup scripts created for earlier versions are still functional so there is no need to edit them.
  • When used in command line with the /SILENT switch, the program's tray icon was still visible even if the program had finished its task and was finally closed. Now, it first disables tray icon then closes.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.12.4 Build 6097 (May 17, 2023)

  • Added:
  • Built-in HTTP connections to fpnet.fr domain have been replaced with secured HTTPS connections.
  • New command line switches to limit files ages to backup. They have to be used with regular command line parameters. Example /DOWNLOADS /DOWNLOADSMAXDAYS=120 to backup downloaded files only less than 120 days old.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.12.1 Build 6047 (Apr 24, 2023)

  • Added:
  • If source drive got disconnected while processing files copy, the program continued to try to copy every still pending file. Now, in interactive mode, it will ask for retry to copy the file, skip this file to next one, skip all files in the same case or cancel current job. In command line mode, it will just try to continue and will log the errors.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Failed files percentage calculation was not based on the right numbers.
  • While listing files to be copied the program could look for items that are in excluded folders. It would not list for copy them but that could be annoying and quite time consuming, especially when dealing with failing hard drives that would slow down the entire process.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.12.1 Build 5971 (Mar 6, 2023)

  • If user profile path changed between backup and restore (because of a different user name for example), paths for Microsoft Office recently opened files list were not changed to match new user profile path.
  • The program could crash when trying to expand the "recent" folder (like C:UsersUser_NameRecent) from the additional folders explorer tree. Since this item can lead to very unstable behavior, this folder des not even appear in it now.
  • The program could hang while running Nirsoft tools. Now, if it calls a Nirsoft program and it runs more than 20 seconds, it will be terminated and the program will process the next item instead of being stuck.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.12.1 Build 5970 (Mar 5, 2023)

  • If user profile path changed between backup and restore (because of a different user name for example), paths for Microsoft Office recently opened files list were not changed to match new user profile path.
  • The program could crash when trying to expand the "recent" folder (like C:UsersUser_NameRecent) from the additional folders explorer tree. Since this item can lead to very unstable behavior, this folder des not even appear in it now.
  • The program could hang while running Nirsoft tools. Now, if it calls a Nirsoft program and it runs more than 20 seconds, it will be terminated and the program will process the next item instead of being stuck.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.12.0 Build 5936 (Dec 28, 2022)

  • Added:
  • Support for Microsoft Office programs recently opened files lists (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher, Visio and Word).
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • It was not possible to send feedback in case of errors or in debug mode.
  • Some error messages could appear when trying to close the program by clicking the "cross" button more than once. Now, a click on this button disables it and the program can then perform cleanup operations before it closes.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.11.1 Build 5839 (Nov 25, 2022)

  • Added:
  • Ability to edit the autobackup.ini configuration file easier. An item in the title bar contextual menu (right-click) has been added for that. This is useful form Home & Office users who will not have to dig into hidden "Program data" folder when they want to add some particular settings.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • The program could miss some empty folders that in fact contained a hidden desktop.ini file. Because of this, those folders were not recreated when restoring data.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.11.0 Build 5812 (Oct 31, 2022)

  • Added :
  • Ability to disable features that require PowerShell scripts (VSS snapshots creation feature, BitLocker key handling, Nirsoft tools whitelisting from Windows Defender). This has been added for users who cannot whitelist the Fab's AutoBackup executable and have their anti-malware trowing alerts about PowerShell scripts it tries to run.
  • Of course, the affected items will not work if this option is enabled. If you really need to disable PowerShell features, then add the DisablePowerShell=1 value under [CONFIG] section in the autobackup.ini file.
  • The program now handles local Windows policies (set with GPEdit.msc).
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • The program did not follow folder junctions (symbolic links). Now, only the ones containing "application data" characters remain ignored to avoid some weird behavior while processing paths like "X:usersUserNameAppDataLocal..."
  • Quickbooks did not appear on installed software list export.
  • Job log was saved in transfer mode even if it was set to never be saved.
  • Pinned Explorer folders item showed grayed out at restore even if it was in the backup.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.10.1 Build 5745 (Aug 25, 2022)

  • Added :
  • Installed antivirus software(s) are now in the installed software report's header.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • If changes were made to the defaults.ini file while the program was running, they were overwritten when program was closed.
  • The program could look frozen while installing drivers. Now, it shows what it is doing in background when running Windows 10 / 11.
  • Drivers were not copied into separated folders at restore/transfer and it could lead to installation problems.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.10.1 Build 5716 (Jul 18, 2022)

  • Removed:
  • IncrediMail support. This discontinued email client relies on Flash Player which is also discontinued.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Minor cosmetic issues

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.10.0 Build 5673 (Jun 13, 2022)

  • Ability to keep items deselected by default. For this, create a "Defaults.ini" file in Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro executable folder. Any item can be excluded by default like Apple IOS devices backups. For items list, see user's manual at page 46.
  • Support for Windows Explorer quick access pinned folders (Windows 10 and 11).

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.9.2 Build 5529 (May 1, 2022)

  • Better support for Outlook PST files on a network share.
  • Outlook 2019 and newer do not support profiles migration from Outlook 2010. Now, when restoring or transferring an Outlook 2010 profile, Fab's AutoBackup will also try to add it to Outlook 2016 and newer versions. This way, Outlook will find it at startup and migrate it to the newer version.
  • Note: in order to avoid potential problems, if a profile with the same name is already registered for Outlook 2016 or newer, this migration will not be performed.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.9.2 Build 5488 (Feb 28, 2022)

  • Added:
  • The program can now grab QuickBooks 2022 license information.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Backup / Restore / Transfer for Firefox-like web browsers will be faster as an unnecessary storage folder is now excluded from file copy.
  • Using EdgeExport to get legacy Edge favorites could crash the program if current .Net Framework installed version was below 4.6. Now, if .Net Framework version is under 4.6, the legacy "Microsoft Edge Favorites" export feature is disabled to prevent this.
  • There could be some blocking error messages at startup saying that Powershell.exe could net be found on some systems where its path its not registered. Now, the program will call it using its full path instead of just "powershell.exe" to avoid this.
  • Trial version was supposed to be fully functional for restore jobs. It was not the case for every item.
  • A dimmed screen saying that the program was still processing some items could remain on the top while the copy job was performed correctly.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.9.1 Build 5416 (Jan 25, 2022)

  • Added:
  • Program's interface can now fit very large displays.
  • Removed:
  • Nirsoft utilities are no longer packed inside installer program. They remain available as a separated download for people who really need them. This will prevent anti-malware triggers for people who do not need them and not using Windows Defender as anti-malware solution.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Fab's AutoBackup could not set required permissions for files and folders with paths longer than 255 characters, so, it could not copy them, throwing various errors.
  • It was possible to select and execute Nirsoft NetPass, MailPassView and WebBrowserPassView even if this was in a scenario when these tools could not work. Because of this, the program was throwing errors.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.9.1 Build 5177 (Jan 12, 2022)

  • Nirsoft tools could still get caught and deleted by Windows Defender. Fab's AutoBackup now extracts them to a temporary "Nirsoft" folder and this folder also gets excluded from Windows Defender real time protection. Of course, Fab's AutoBackup removes that exclusion when it is closing.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.9.1 Build 5168 (Jan 10, 2022)

  • Added:
  • When dealing with dying slow hard drives, it is better to focus on the most important data for users. In backup mode, the program now processes users documents, pictures, music, etc... and emails before web browsers. Nothing changes in restore or transfer modes when it can be useful to be able to browse the internet while the program is processing remaining data.
  • Removed:
  • Old BlackBerry OS smartphones do not work anymore since January 4th 2022. So, BlackBerry Desktop manager settings and BlackBerry backups items have been removed from Fab's AutoBackup.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Fab's AutoBackup 7.9.0.5112 could not download Nirsoft tools if they were missing even without firewall restrictions.
  • Some antivirus softwares (Kaspersky for example) could delete Fab's AutoBackup main program because of suspect behavior since it tried to whitelist itself from Windows Defender at startup.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.9.0 Build 5112 (Nov 26, 2021)

  • When Using VSS snapshots and copying Chrome family browser profiles, there could be copy errors while backing up.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.9.0 Build 5091 (Nov 26, 2021)

  • Added:
  • Support for Microsoft Visio shapes, drawings, templates, stencils, addons and startup folder.
  • Support for OpenVPN configuration files.
  • "Full" Google Chrome profile is now handled again. Just be aware that at next startup, Chrome can reset settings like default search engine, start page and tabs, new tab page settings, pinned tabs, website settings (like granted popups or mic access) and cookies. It can also remove extensions and themes. To keep at least bookmarks and history, do NOT click the "Reset all settings" button in Chrome settings.
  • Removed:
  • Malwarebytes now encrypts its license key. It cannot be grabbed anymore, so, this feature is removed.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • When dealing with large amounts of additional files at restore, the program could look stuck while it was listing them. Now, the backup process creates a text list of any additional file that's in the backup. This way, it will be able to list additional files way faster. If that list is not there, it will show that it is currently listing additional files.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.4 Build 4908 (Nov 3, 2021)

  • Since they are now in password protected zip archives, Nirsoft tools are now directly bundled in setup program.
  • Added a checksum control for Nirsoft tools updates. Sometimes, firewalls can block download attempts so downloaded file could be 0kb and the program could hang during backup/transfer. If download fails, the program will show a message prompt and Nirsoft tool previous version is restored. This way, the program remains functional.
  • There could be error messages (sometimes app crashes) when using the program without active network connection while it was trying to check for Nirsoft tools updates.
  • Greatly improved search time while listing files to be copied for Google Chrome, Chromium Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Maxthon, Avant Browser, Comodo Dragon browser, Epic Privacy Browser, Avast Secure Browser, AVG Secure Browser, Comodo Dragon browser, 360 Browser and Chromium.
  • Windows Defender could catch some Nirsoft tools when the program was checking their versions numbers. This was not disturbing for the rest of the process but it is now smoother.
  • Improved exclusion process from Windows Defender for Nirsoft Tools. Now, the program excludes them as soon as it starts and totally cleans matching exclusions when it closes.
  • Setup will not show End User License Agreement (EULA) as the program itself shows it at first startup. There is no need to accept it twice.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.3 Build 4800 (Sep 29, 2021)

  • Fixes done earlier today have introduced other issues with Nirsoft tools: they were not recognized anymore even if they were here. Because of this, they could not be used.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.3 Build 4799 (Sep 29, 2021)

  • License information was not kept for new activations.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.3 Build 4791 (Sep 29, 2021)

  • Intuit QuickBooks user settings are now supported.
  • Internet Explorer 11 start page and settings support for Windows 11 have been removed as there is no Internet Explorer in it. Favorites are disabled in backup mode in Windows 11 but still supported for restore or transfer since they can be imported in Microsoft Edge.
  • There could be error messages when closing the program. They did not have any consequences on backup / restore / transfer jobs, it was just cosmetic.
  • Windows Defender kept deleting Nirsoft tools. They are handled differently now as they are downloaded in password protected zip archives. This way, Defender does not detect them. At startup, Fab's AutoBackup sets %tmp% folder as excluded from Windows Defender real time protection, extracts Nirsoft needed tool to this folder, run it and remove it when it is done. %tmp% folder exclusion is removed from Windows Defender when Fab's AutoBackup is closed. If any other anti-malware is running on the machine, it still needs to be manually disabled before running Fab's AutoBackup if you plan to grab passwords and/or product keys.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.2 Build 4705 (Sep 9, 2021)

  • There were errors when restoring / transferring Mozilla Thunderbird profiles.
  • Any external drive plugged in after Fab's AutoBackup has been started did not show up in additional folders and excluded folders tree views after source drive list refresh.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.2 Build 4696 (Sep 6, 2021)

  • Added:
  • Size for each item other but registry or text exports or html reports can now be shown in summary when choosing "Show total size before copy" option.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • In some cases, after a restore or transfer job, there could be more than one profile set as default for Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. Note: install Firefox or Thunderbird first for best results, otherwise, right profile will have to be selected manually using "firefox /p" or "thunderbird /p" command.
  • Nirsoft utilities were not whitelisted in Windows Defender if there was another anti-malware installed on the system. Because of this, even if third party anti-malware was disabled, Windows Defender prevented them from running and Fab's AutoBackup could hang.
  • Pro version : 7-Zip self extracting package used for software distribution was flagged as trojan with VBA32 Anti Virus engine. Now, Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro is distributed as setup package. It's still portable anyway, so you can choose any target to unpack the files. Default path is "C:Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro"

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.2 Build 4447 (Aug 4, 2021)

  • Recent files support has been removed since it was giving much trouble (errors, program freezes) than it was helpful.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • In backup/transfer mode, if there was nothing in Additional folders list and some got added, they were ignored and did not get copied. Workaround was to uncheck the additional folders box and check it back.
  • The dark window showing listing process could remain on top and never disappear even if copy job was finished.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.1 Build 4402 (Jul 20, 2021)

  • Added:
  • Windows 7/8/8.1 Sticky Notes can now be restored/transferred straight to Windows 11.
  • Removed:
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • Windows 7/8/8.1 Sticky Notes restore/transfer to Windows 10 was not working anymore due to a missing folder on target user profile.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.1 Build 4387 (Jul 19, 2021)

  • Added:
  • The program can now export BitLocker digital password for current running system drive. Backup this item before any Windows upgrade because in some cases, the operating system would not start anymore and ask for this password to access the drive.
  • Ability to select all folders in a drive's root at once in additional folders by double click on it or using ">>" button. Then all sub folders will be added to the list except some sensitive ones like C:Boot, C:Windows, etc... as they could harm a working windows system at restore/transfer. If you wan to get them anyway, you will need to select them individually. Note about C:Boot folder : as it may totally break a machine's ability to start, it's impossible to select it anyway.
  • Windows Explorer recently opened files list is now handled.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Improved Mozilla products family (Firefox, Thunderbird...) profiles handling.
  • If source drive disconnects while copy job is running (this can happen if source drive is USB attached), the program will not try to send an error report feedback since this is an external problem and not a program issue.
  • Windows 7/8/8.1 sticky notes can't be migrated to Windows 11. Due to this, restore or transfer will be disabled for this item if Windows 11 is final operating system. If those sticky notes are really needed, they should be migrated to Windows 10 first, then migrated to Windows 11.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.8.0 Build 4231 (Jul 1, 2021)

  • Added:
  • Support for NVDA screen reader settings.
  • Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 (currently in preview for developers) are supported
  • Support for DrayTek Smart VPN Client settings.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Default Mozilla products family (Firefox, Thunderbird...) profiles were not set back as default profiles after restore/transfer.
  • If the fonts key was missing from the registry, the program got stuck while trying to export fonts registry information during backup/transfer.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.7.0 Build 4119 (Jun 16, 2021)

  • Added:
  • A new "Accessibility" category is there.
  • Support for Windows accessibility settings (color scheme, magnifier, narrator, text size, etc...). This item will keep its last state. For example, if you uncheck it, it will not be selected for next job.
  • Support for Windows mouse cursors settings (size, speed, etc...).
  • JAWS Screen reader settings
  • Kurzweil settings
  • Support for HMRC Paye Tools
  • Installed printers list export: printer driver's name is now a clickable link that opens Google with printer driver name as search request. This can save time.
  • Current, source and target computers names now appear in log's header depending on the job.
  • Counters for copied, failed and remaining files now includes percentage based on total files to process to help knowing what remains to do.
  • Mozilla based products will stop asking for profile at startup after a restore or a transfer job. This could be very annoying for people with a single profile and could lead end user to make mistakes. If there are more than one profile, profile selection will have to be re-enabled manually.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • GPG4win certificates could not be restored.
  • Sometimes Mozilla based products profiles restoration/transfer could not work as expected. To prevent this, these items are now always copied in mirroring mode. Affected products are Firefox, Pale Moon, Comodo Ice Dragon, Waterfox, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird and PostBox.
  • Mirror copy efficiency has been improved.
  • When processing a Mozilla Firefox profile, serviceworker.txt file's content is reset to prevent corrupted content error message when browsing some websites.
  • Bundled third party tools Sumatra PDF and sqlite3 have been updated to their newest versions.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.6.2 Build 3791 (Mar 17, 2021)

  • An error message about a temporary file being used by another process when trying to update from the program itself could appear. This change will be visible only starting from next update. If you are experiencing such an issue today, please grab full package from your store account.
  • Improved files size check after copy. Now if source drive disconnects while copying, the program will immediately throw warnings about target files size (usually 0kb) not matching with source ones.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.6.1 Build 3732 (Feb 8, 2021)

  • Changed/Fixed :
  • The program could not find redirected folders paths when new path is elsewhere on C drive. For example, documents folder could be missed if its path is set to "C:Documents" instead of "C:UsersUser_NameDocuments" as it was not found.
  • QuickBooks company file cant get corrupted if QuickBooks processes are still running while backing up / transferring data. If such processes are detected a dialog will show up to prevent this.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.6.1 Build 3668 (Jan 25, 2021)

  • Drivers backup in command line mode was not working.
  • The program could remain stuck in background while checking for updates availability. Now this process is triggered manually so it starts quicker.
  • It is not possible to call updater tool from the link within program's interface with version 7.6.0.3532. If you are running version 7.6.0.3532, you will need to download full package from your store account to get this update. For this, follow this procedure.
  • It is not possible to restart Home & Office version as administrator from the program's interface in version 7.6.0.3532. However, it was still possible to start it as administrator using right click on program's shortcut.
  • There could be some error messages about PowerShell when running under Windows XP.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.6.0 Build 3532 (Oct 19, 2020)

  • Added:
  • Support for Zoom data
  • Support for MicroSIP softphone client settings
  • Support for Swann HomeSave View settings
  • Drivers can be selected individually
  • "Drivers" check box is not selected by default.
  • If "Drivers" check box is deselected in backup or transfer mode, the program will remember it for next job.
  • Ability to add a custom wallpaper to welcome screen.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • The program used to hang at "Downloading DPInst" when restoring/transferring drivers while there was no Internet connection.
  • Dropbox cache is now always excluded from file copy.
  • Admin account used to run the program at UAC prompt was still the restored/transferred files and folders owner even if they belonged to another user profile.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.5.0 Build 3327 (Aug 20, 2020)

  • Added:
  • Support for installed drivers.
  • MailBird email client data is now handled.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • In rare cases (1 known case so far), target public downloads path could not be detected and could trigger a built in security feature preventing source file from being overwritten by itself and get destroyed in restore or transfer mode.
  • Updater tool did not overwrite old translation files.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.4.0 Build 3167 (Jun 29, 2020)

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • There were error messages when trying to check permissions for paths longer than 255 characters.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.4.0 Build 3164 (Jun 26, 2020)

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • /ALWAYSOVERWRITE and /KEEPFOLDERSDATES command line switches were still ignored despite fixes released earlier. It's all fixed now.
  • "Purge" feature aka mirror copy (/PURGE command line parameter as well) was not working as expected as it deleted the entire destination folder instead of just removing items that do no exist in source anymore. This was not a big deal except that all the files had to be copied again when it was not supposed to be necessary.
  • Sticky notes item could appear grayed out in restore mode, even if sticky notes file was in the backup. However, it restored fine anyway.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.4.0 Build 3141 (Jun 25, 2020)

  • Added:
  • Date format used for backup folder was current system short date format. This could be disturbing for many IT users. Now, it's back to YYYY-MM-DD by default but still can be overridden to set the desired date format in the autobackup.ini file. For example, to use something like YYYY-DD-MM, create a "ShortDateFormat" (without quotes) value under [CONFIG] section and set it to YYYYDDMM. This should look like "ShortDateFormat=YYYYDDMM" (still without quotes).
  • If the program is branded with a company name and this name can be used in a file name, it's now put at the beginning of every html report like installed software, printers and logs.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • Updater tool's way to deal with corrupted downloads has been improved. Instead of stopping the entire download process upon fifth try, it will mark current item as failed (and rename its old version from .old to .exe so program will remain functional) and process next one.
  • It's now possible to turn off updater tool checksum control feature for downloaded files. Add a "DontCheckDownloads" value under [CONFIG] section in autobackup.ini file and set its value to 1. This way, updater tool will not check downloaded files and will work like it did before this feature introduction.
  • In some cases, Firefox (or any other Mozilla family products) profile could not be used upon restore/transfer.
  • Files integrity check, folders dates keeping and VSS use parameters could be ignored when performing backup in command line mode.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.4.0 Build 3099 (Jun 18, 2020)

  • Ability to set log files storage location and their threshold level. Options available are : 0 (never save any log), 1 (always save a log), 2 (save logs only if there were warning and/or errors) and 3 (only if there were errors).
  • Now, when an update for a third party tool is available (NirSoft tools for example), the program downloads it automatically without prompting.
  • New layout for job options to make the program look less overloaded: options can be shown or hidden just before job launch on summary page.
  • Removed :
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • If backup is stored on a network location, the program could take ages trying to set permissions on files while restoring. Now, if backup is on a network location, permissions test is skipped so it will not waste time here.
  • When "Move files from source folder" option was selected, if there were warning or errors while copying files, source files could still be removed from source. Now if a warning or an error occurs while copying files, that option is totally disabled to prevent further files removals.
  • Other profiles backups (public items backup as well) could be deleted if "Move files from source folder" option was selected in restore mode. Now, only selected user backup is removed when this option is selected. Of course, if public items are also selected, public items backup gets removed as well which is expected behavior.
  • Due to an incompatibility between "Check files integrity after copy" and "Move files from source folder" options, a message prompt shows up if one is already enabled. Indeed, it's impossible to compare source and target file if that file is not in source location anymore! To use one of those options, the other must be disabled.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.3.1 Build 2947 (May 29, 2020)

  • Added:
  • File integrity control feature for the updater tool. If file download does not complete properly while updating the program, it will try again 5 times. If downloaded file is still corrupted at the end of the process, program update is cancelled.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • The feature that checks if the program has enough permissions to access folders contents used to create and delete a test file in the folder to be tested. Now, it uses Windows APIs so writing in the folder is not needed anymore. It could cause folder time stamps to change, so, this information could not be kept reliably.
  • When using an admin account to run the program that has never been used to sign in a windows session, there could be an issue when restoring/transferring system fonts.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.3.1 Build 2908 (May 18, 2020)

  • When there were several user profiles to restore and they had Mozilla family products (Firefox, Thunderbird) profiles, it was possible to restore them only for the fist user and not others.
  • When unselecting an additional folder at backup, it could be copied anyway.
  • The program will not try to take ownership of symbolic link folders anymore. That was useless and a waste of time.
  • Fixed that weird behavior of the Check All/Uncheck All box on "User's data" tab when there was more than one selected user profile.
  • Network printers were only listed for the first user but not for the others.
  • Huge number of minor cosmetic glitches.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.3.1 Build 2580 (May 6, 2020)

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • There was still an app freeze while restoring fonts registry information. System font change notification has been totally removed. A reboot may be required to see restored fonts on the system.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.3.1 Build 2579 (May 6, 2020)

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • For some users, the program asked for license information at every start because of a problem when checking email address.
  • Redesigned additional files feature for better ease of use.
  • It was possible to select Microsoft Edge favorites (not Chromium) on systems older than Windows 10!
  • Changed order for Mozilla family browsers processing at restore. They are done first so there is no need to wait for other items to complete before being able to use them.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.3.0 Build 2083 (Apr 23, 2020)

  • Additional files at drive root caused program crashed and were not copied.
  • Cosmetic adjustments.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.3.0 Build 2074 (Apr 17, 2020)

  • Added:
  • Improved Nirsoft tools exclusion from Windows Defender by adding them to Process exclusions.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Improved additional folders selection by not scanning folders content at this stage. Large amounts of small files in such folders could lead the program to crash because of too much used RAM. Content scanning happens now with other items.
  • The EdgeExport third party tool to export Microsoft Edge (legacy) was missing from downloadable package.
  • The time appeared twice in installed software and installed printers report.
  • The installed software and installed printers report names are now translated.
  • Minor cosmetic adjustments.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.3.0 Build 1930 (Apr 14, 2020)

  • Added:
  • Dial-up and VPN connection settings (Rasphone.pbk) at user level is now handled. Until now, this file was picked up only at machine level, so, if user had personal dial-up and VPN settings, they were not copied.
  • The program now adds "%ProgramData%Fab's AutoBackup 7" folder to Windows Defender exclusions. This should limit it from deleting Nirsoft Tools.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • When just Internet Explorer home page and settings were selected, the program behaved like nothing was selected.
  • A wrong empty rasphone.pbk file could be copied instead of the good one. Also, to be more explicit, this formerly "Rasphone.pbk file (modem settings file)" feature has also been renamed as "Dial-up and VPN settings".
  • If typed addresses history (auto-complete cache, nk2) was deselected manually, it was still considered as selected.
  • The program now tries to match its current date and time format to the selected translation. If it cannot, it will use local system format.
  • VSS copy was not used for some some Chromium based browsers, even when VSS was available.
  • Saved logs files names are now translated into selected language.
  • Minor cosmetic adjustments.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.2.0 Build 1576 (Mar 23, 2020)

  • Gets user's default printer name.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • NK2 file (typed addresses history) from Outlook 2003 was not found and could be left behind.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.2.0 Build 1573 (Mar 2, 2020)

  • Optional file integrity check sum control feature after copy.
  • Support for Notepad++ settings.
  • Support for AnyDesk settings.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • Additional files and folders features could trigger errors while listing files to copy.
  • Fonts registry exported information file could remain empty in the backup and make the program hang at restore.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.1.2 Build 1390 (Feb 6, 2020)

  • The program could not set folders dates when backing up to a network path.
  • The program could miss Brave browser profile because its path has changed.
  • Public items could not be restored if translated "Public" word was something other than "Public".

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.1.2 Build 1382 (Jan 20, 2020)

  • Folders timestamps were changed when checking permissions to get their contents. This broke the "keep folders dates" feature.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.1.2 Build 1378 (Jan 16, 2020)

  • Added:
  • Support for new Microsoft Edge Chromium browser profile.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • When the program encountered a folder with restrictive permissions and could not access its content, it used to adjust permissions of the entire parent item instead of just that folder. This could lead to a huge waste of time.
  • Lowered log GUI font size for better readability.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.1.1 Build 1297 (Dec 18, 2019)

  • Removed :
  • Windows Start Screen layout. This item was made for Windows 8 and could throw error messages while restoring/transferring.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • The program did not backup additional files and folders while running in safe mode and using VSS feature. To prevent this problem, VSS feature is now totally disabled in safe mode.
  • Command line mode was broken when "/SILENT" switch was used.
  • Google Chrome profile is now handled differently as Chrome now encrypt them for security reasons. When a Chrome profile is restored/transferred, if encryption key (linked to machine and user) is different from the current one (that's the case if Operating system has been reinstalled, computer changed or if user profile is new), Chrome deletes all settings upon startup thinking that malware has corrupted it. This happens when dealing with usual user profiles, Active Directory domain users are not affected. Now, when source user is part of a domain, the entire Chrome profile is backed up, if not, only bookmarks are saved. In case of a transfer, both source and target user accounts must be part of a domain or only bookmarks are transferred. For restore, to restore a full Chrome profile, target user account must be part of a domain otherwise, only bookmarks will be processed.
  • Improved Malwarebytes Anti-malware license key grabbing feature's behavior: it now shows a reminder about limited activation licenses.
  • The installed software feature listing did not grab per user installed software. Some pieces of software do not need admin permissions to be installed and sit in user's profile. If such a program is detected, there will be something like "- ##### UserName ##### at the end of the line in the list.
  • Program now shows in the log if it has failed to set dates on target folder instead of putting this information in an error report. Most of the time, this is linked to a disconnected source media (low powered USB drive for example).

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.1.1 Build 1136 (Nov 15, 2019)

  • The program used to waste time trying to take ownership of folders in VSS snapshots when dealing with Mozilla family products and additional folders.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.1.1 Build 1105 (Nov 4, 2019)

  • Important : When restrictive permissions were set on a sub-folder, Fab's AutoBackup could miss their content because it could not get access to it. When such a folder is encountered, it throws an error if permissions could not be adjusted.
  • VSS snapshots are now used only if they're needed like backing up Outlook files while Outlook is running for example. If it's not needed, regular copy is performed instead.
  • Improved Microsoft Edge favorites export feature's general behavior.
  • Some odd things with translation files : the program can now remove by itself any "conflicted" language file that could be there an avoid translation bugs at startup.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.1.0 Build 1001 (Sep 25, 2019)

  • Added :
  • Ability to check if exported Edge favorites HTML file contains favorites or not. If there is nothing, that file is not even kept. This prevents from importing manually an empty file when it's not needed.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • Download prompt for EdgeExport tool download has been moved to summary page instead of showing up upon job type choice. If download is declined, Edge Favorites will not be processed and an error is written to the log.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.1.10 Build 987 (Sep 24, 2019)

  • Added:
  • Microsoft Edge favorites support feature is coming back. A manual step is required after restore/transfer: import EdgeExport.html file on the desktop from Edge Browser itself to totally recover them. Process is detailed in user's manual.
  • Support for web browsers Pale Moon, Comodo IceDragon, Comodo Dragon, Epic Privacy Browser, AVG Secure Browser, Avast Secure Browser, 360 Browser, Maxthon and Avant Browser.
  • Ability to process only browsers bookmarks/favorites in command line mode.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Opera and Vivaldi could not be unchecked in command line builder tool.
  • C:Boot folder (or X:boot or Y:boot...) is now excluded from copy by default to prevent machine from being unable to boot after a restore or a transfer when it has been selected in additional folders.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.12 Build 836 (Aug 6, 2019)

  • Support for Microsoft Edge browser favorites : Microsoft has changed something in they way it works with Windows 10 1903 and they are not copyable/transferable anymore, even from a user profile to another on the same machine.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • Removed forced uppercase for user names. This way, user names keep looking as they were.
  • Local web browser profiles are now automatically flushed before they get restored or transferred. This avoids orphan files from being kept, creating issues.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.11 Build 759 (Jun 13, 2019)

  • Before running a job, job summary showed that target media had 0 byte free.
  • Completed Spanish and Russian language translation files.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.11 Build 713 (Apr 30, 2019)

  • Added:
  • Support for SafeInCloud Password Manager database
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Some items were missing from command line builder tool: Word startup folder, Word custom dictionaries and Word auto correct entries.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.10 Build 700 (Apr 2, 2019)

  • Added:
  • Warnings and dialog about folders redirected to a network share in backup/transfer mode: permissions on network shares could be altered. Users now have the choice between copying files anyway or skip network redirected folders.
  • Removed :
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • Excluded fonts list has been updated to reduce operating system issues while restoring them.
  • To prevent issues, existing fonts file are not overwritten anymore when they already exist on target system, even if the program is set to overwrite every file.
  • Any folder containing the word "cache" in its name is now excluded by default from Google Chrome like browsers backup/transfer. The cache folders list was hard coded but it looks like new ones are added to Chrome quite often so, transferring them could take ages.
  • The program used to freeze for a moment at the end of a copy job if it had once been set so send logs and SMTP server was unreachable.
  • To prevent existing shortcuts on public desktop from being broken (IE MS Office ones, can be others as well), the program will not overwrite them anymore, even if it has been set to overwrite any existing file.
  • In backup mode, the program did not get the default Outlook profile's name when dealing with Outlook 2013 and newer. When restoring, it could not set it back as default profile. This fix avoids having to set Outlook profile as default manually.
  • Mozilla family software (Firefox, Thunderbird, Waterfox, Seamonkey ...) profiles are now restored to the default folder in order to avoid copying them to a wrong place if original path does not exist on new system.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.9 Build 578 (Feb 12, 2019)

  • Due to multiple failures when restoring data without any obvious reason, all changes made since 7.0.8.513 released on January 2nd 2019 have been rolled back then bug fixing has been started over.
  • Typo in IncrediMail target folder at restore. Data went to "C:UsersUser_NameAppdataLocalIIM" instead of "C:UsersUser_NameAppdataLocalIM".
  • All copied files were shown as failed when "Remove source files" option was selected.
  • When restoring public items, log could show that "PUBLIC" stuff are copied to a user's profile. This was just a cosmetic issue as public data is copied to the right location.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.9 Build 567 (Feb 6, 2019)

  • Added : - Small name change for Fab's AutoBackup 7 : to avoid confusions, Fab's AutoBackup 7 (not Pro) version is now called Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office.
  • Removed :
  • Changed/Fixed : - All copied files were shown as failed when "Remove source files" option was selected.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.8 Build 557 (Jan 24, 2019)

  • Typo in IncrediMail target folder at restore. Data went to "C:UsersUser_NameAppdataLocalIIM" instead of "C:UsersUser_NameAppdataLocalIM".

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.8 Build 556 (Jan 22, 2019)

  • Changed/Fixed :
  • Sometimes for an unknown (yet) reason, Internet Explorer start page fails to restore. In this case, the program will get information like "Start Page" kind of registry value and add it to its error report. Also, an error message will be logged at run time.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.8 Build 513 (Jan 2, 2019)

  • Dropbox path detection issue on target system when Dropbox was already installed. Dropbox content could not be restored because of this.
  • This one is a bit twisted: When target file already existed and was skipped by user at message prompt, if user went back after copy job and started copy again, the file got copied anyway, even if user said to skip it again.
  • Program's startup time has been improved by threading updates check.
  • When using VSS mode, Outlook PST files under "My documents" could be copied a second time if they were selected as well within Outlook PST files dedicated section.
  • Minor cosmetic issue: typo error on screen while taking VSS snapshot.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.8 Build 476 (Nov 12, 2018)

  • Added:
  • Ubiquity UniFi database support
  • If a folder's location like "My documents" has been changed and there is still content inside the old folder, Fab's AutoBackup now gets those files as well. They are restored/transferred into a "@Recovered" subfolder.
  • Improved default browser detection while listing installed software: when it is possible, browser version number is grabbed too.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.7 Build 377 (Oct 10, 2018)

  • Added :
  • Installed software list now includes default browser and default email client software for each user whose profile has been selected for backup / transfer.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • Lots of Google Chrome cache files were still copied even if the "Exclude local browsers cache" option was selected. This will speed up the copy process.
  • When backing up data from more than one user profile, backup path and its free space was several times in job summary.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.7 Build 300 (Sep 29, 2018)

  • For RMM (Remote Monitoring and Management) software users: the program now writes events to the Windows Applications Events log. This should help monitoring jobs using such software. See the user's manual for event IDs meanings.
  • Ultimaker Cura 3D printing software settings handling
  • In backup mode, the job summary now shows the storage location and its free space. In case of doubt, this avoids to come back to see what it is before launching the copy.
  • Changed/Fixed :
  • When backing up or transferring Outlook data from a downgraded Outlook machine. Example: there was a working Outlook 2016 that has been unistalled and replaced with Outlook 2010 instead, the program got the account settings from Outlook 2016 (the newest) instead of the ones from Outlook 2010. Now, the program gets the version of the currently installed Outlook first and then focuses on its settings.
  • The file copy progress bar was not working anymore while copying files over a UNC network path.
  • The default browser detection method has been improved (thanks to Alex from Malwarebytes for the trick). Now the various pages and html logs open in the right browser.
  • The program wrongly detected overridden paths for various user and public folders pointing to the backup so files could not be restore where they should have been.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.6 Build 84 (Aug 16, 2018)

  • Removed:
  • Instructions to set additional read/write permissions to newly created user profiles straight from the program before restore or transfer jobs. This was added to solve an issue at restore to such new user profiles but it was not the cure. Since it slows down the job, it has been removed.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Restore to a newly created user profile from the app was not working. It required to restart the program or reboot the computer then restore the files.
  • Better form resize handling for the live job information boxes and labels.
  • When using VSS snapshots, the source folder looked like "C:Fabs_X_ShadowCopy" and could appear on job reports. The "Fabs" word has been replaced with "VSS" since this could be disturbing for branded software.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.6 Build 48 (Aug 13, 2018)

  • Instructions to set required permissions to newly created user profiles straight from the program before restore or transfer.
  • When a copy fails because a file was in use, the program now clearly logs it.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.4 Build 32750 (Jul 17, 2018)

  • When running in command line mode and there was a windows.old folder on the source drive, the Windows.old folder was processed instead of the current Windows folder.
  • Restoring user's data was not possible when public profile was selected too.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.4 Build 32732 (Jul 4, 2018)

  • Added:
  • 3D Objects Windows 10 user folder.
  • Ability to transfer Windows 7 sticky notes to Windows 10 sticky notes app. Caution: all the existing sticky notes are lost in the process on the Windows 10 app if there are, so be careful!
  • Changed/fixed:
  • The order information was shown in clear on the main app when clicking the "key" icon on the upper right corner.
  • Sometimes, cloud files could not be copied when dealing with another user profile due to missing required NTFS permissions.
  • There was a glitch with network places item that was checked by default but the tile remained disabled (greyed out).
  • The scheduled tasks could not be created using the command line builder tool on workstations not using 24 hours time format.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.3 Build 32676 (Jun 4, 2018)

  • Folders exclusions did not work when using VSS mode.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.3 Build 32628 (May 17, 2018)

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.3 Build 32624 (May 17, 2018)

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • When the features "Keep folders dates" and "Show total size before copy" had never been used, their boxes were checked anyway but ignored. To enable these features, it was necessary to uncheck then recheck these boxes.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 7.0.2.32469 (Apr 20, 2018)

  • The program could not deal with machines with customized default user profile: the detected paths from the registry were from the profile that has been used to customize the default profile.
  • There is no more forced system restart at program close when some users registry hives cannot be unloaded. Instead, there is a warning message showing the affected users profiles only if they are on the current running system and saying that logging in using one of these accounts is impossible until a computer restart.

  • Extra spaces when copying/pasting order information are now ignored when filling the activation form.
  • When just restoring public items, the "PUBLIC" profile is now selected automatically as target profile for restore jobs.
  • There was no "backup.conf" file generated when just generating exports with the Nirsoft tools and nothing else selected. This made the restore process impossible in this case.
  • The "Use VSS" label colors could not be changed.
  • The "Show log" button could load the log in Internet Explorer instead of the default browser.

  • Speed up Google Chrome profile processing by excluding more cache files by default than with older releases.
  • There could be some warnings about file dates differences (one second) between source and copied files when copying to a FAT, FAT32 or exFAT drive.
  • The program could crash when selecting the entire C drive in the additional folders section. Note that this is still not advised since there are a large amount of files in use by Windows and other processes that will not be copied and generate errors. At lease, it is possible to cancel this selection now. If you need to backup something unusual on the C Drive, just expand it and select the right folder instead.
  • Blank error messages could appear and block the copy process when the target file could not be created.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.13.0.31469 (Feb 16, 2018)

  • Added:
  • Message prompt if there is not enough free space for restore or transfer jobs.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Improved mouse wheel scrolling behavior on additional folders tree.
  • Exclusion of "System Volume Information" and "$RECYCLE.BIN" folders, "pagefile.sys" and "hyberfie.sys" from additional folders feature. Copying these files is useless, Windows locks them and they throw non blocking warning and error messages.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.13.0.31425 (Jan 31, 2018)

  • Better behavior when dealing with mapped network drives if the current user account is an administrator and use such drives. Full UNC paths are still the best option for network file copies
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • The registry exports were not generated when the running operation system was Windows XP. In Example, it was not possible to backup then restore Outlook Express settings
  • The first "Next" Button could be enabled even if there was no valid backup path set up after selecting another user name as data source

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.11.3.31366 (Nov 20, 2017)

  • From now on, Microsoft Office temporary files '~ $' are excluded from all copy jobs.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.11.3.31363 (Nov 14, 2017)

  • In some cases, it was impossible to restore a backup to a new user profile created with Fab's AutoBackup. This was due to Windows not releasing the new user registry file fast enough. Now the program waits for this file to be loadable and not used by any other process.
  • Sometimes, Nirsoft utilities WebBrowserPassView, NetPass and MailPassView were considered as missing files and the program prompted for an internet download, even if the files were already there.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.11.1.31299 (Sep 29, 2017)

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Data was copied to the current user profile when creating a new account in restore mode.

  • Removed:
  • Ability to choose the various Nirsoft utilities locations
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Fab's AutoBackup will now use Nirsoft utilities downloaded from its interface since the ones available directly on Nirsoft website cannot work in command line mode. This is required for use from Fab's AutoBackup
  • Checking and unchecking Java security exceptions sites item at restore checked and unchecked Google Earth markplaces instead
  • Microsoft Edge favorites are unselected by default for restore and transfer jobs when this feature can be harmful for the Microsoft Edge browser if Windows 10 versions mismatch between source and target. In this case, the item is colored in orange and an explanation is shown if the mouse cursor is over it. The item can still be selected manually at your own risk. It remains selected for backup jobs because there is no risk here

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.10.1.31080 (Jul 27, 2017)

  • Added:
  • Copy speed improvements between local drives (including USB drives) using a new copy method. Performance remains the same when copying to/from network locations.

  • Removed:
  • Job log horizontal scroll bar to avoid glitches while processing data. It has been replaced with a hint on mouse over.
  • Changed/Fixed:

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.10.0.30904 (Jun 23, 2017)

  • Added:
  • Option to continue anyway if processes like Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Outlook are running. Caution: if these programs are locking files on the computer, they will not be copied and errors will appear in the log.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • When restoring in command line mode, there was sometimes a message prompt asking for public items integration. These items are now handled by default without prompt in such case.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.10.0.30899 (May 23, 2017)

  • Added:
  • Microsoft Edge favorites feature is back. Caution: it works fine if source and target Windows builds are the same. Otherwise, Microsoft Edge can fail after restore or transfer. A warning about this will be shown in the log in such case and a backup copy of the original folder will be made, just in case. Another good thing to know : this feature does not work for the first Windows 10 official build because favorites worked differently within Edge.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • A message saying that nothing was selected for backup / transfer was shown when only product keys were selected.
  • The entire Steam program folder was copied when only a single sub-folder was necessary. This will save some backup space.

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Sometimes, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird and PostBox profiles did not show up in the selection lists when backing up / transferring data.
  • When creating a new user profile, it was possible to type characters like '' or '/' in the user name text field. Then, errors occurred when restoring or transferring files to such mistyped user accounts.
  • It was not possible anymore to create a new folder when selecting a new backup location (the "New folder" button was missing from the dialog box).

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.8.0.30513 (Feb 14, 2017)

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • All the registry exports were in a wrong character encoding (UTF8 instead of Unicode). This resulted in impossible registry imports when restoring. Files were here but not settings. For example, Outlook files are well restored but the profile was not. Please update to this version and destroy any V6.8.0.30498 you have in production environment.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.8.0.30498 (Feb 7, 2017)

  • Added:
  • All the Fab's AutoBackup executables are now digitally signed. Hopefully, this will avoid false positives from anti-malware programs
  • The duplicate files are now put at the end of the copy file list when the program is set to ask what to do with them (the default setting). This way, all the files are almost copied when the prompt message asking how to handle duplicates pops up
  • Removed:
  • To avoid confusion, the select source hard drive and windows directory panel has been removed in standard version since this feature is only available in Pro version
  • Changed/Fixed:

  • The command line builder tool allowed saving a backup/restore script if the backup location was not specified
  • The backup/restore process started anyway even if the backup location was not specified in command line mode
  • The program tried to export the saved network credentials even if processing another user profile (Nirsoft NetPassView cannot work in this case)

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.7.6213.53902 (Jan 5, 2017)

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.7.6211.36437 (Jan 4, 2017)

  • Added:
  • Ability to send the job log via email when using the user interface. Previously, this was possible only in command line mode. Select the option from the actions after job drop down menu.
  • Included user's manual in the updater tool. On next update, user's manual will be downloadable with it.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Changed the default timeout delay while copying a file from 10 seconds to 30 seconds. Also, the transferred size is monitored instead of the progress bar position. This avoids time out events on large files (several Giga Bytes) while they are in fact being copied.
  • Some texts remained in white event when text branding was set up in the "[BRANDING]" section of "autobackup.ini" configuration file. This caused invisible labels in the job log window when the background color was set to white.
  • The name of the file being copied comes back to the user interface even if it is small sized. This was designed to save processor resources while copying small files. Beside this, the program looked frozen while processing such files. This has finally low impact on global performance so, user experience has been preferred here.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.5.6110.60282 (Oct 20, 2016)

  • Added:
  • RAM use improvements optimizations.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • Important fix: It was not possible to access password protected users profiles because the program was not taking their ownership and then could not set the right permissions on them. Backup/Transfer was impossible with such user accounts. Note that this issue remains if running windows XP operating systems because they do not have the Microsoft "takeown.exe" program that is used for this task. The only work around for such systems is to take ownership of the users profiles manually (in safe mode if using Windows XP Home Edition) and set the Administrators group permissions to full control.

  • Reduced memory use in case of large amount of files to copy.

New in Fab's AutoBackup 6.4.3.30491 (Oct 20, 2016)

  • Added:
  • Ability to use up to 3GB of RAM on 32bit systems and 4GB on 64 bit systems. This should limit the "out of memory errors" when there is a huge amount of files being copied.
  • In order to help sorting out errors while getting QuickBooks license, the XML license file containing that information can be attached to the error report in a encrypted zip archive. The user is notified about this attachment and can choose to not send any file.
  • If the copying data from a failing drive, files sometimes cannot be copied and lock the rest of the job. Now, when the program tries to copy a file, it will monitor the copy progress bar every 10 seconds. If it has not moved, then the file is probably on a damaged section and cannot be copied. In this case, it is skipped to the next file.
  • Updated some Nirsoft utilities packages on the web server. This program version will prompt you for downloading them.
  • Changed/Fixed:
  • The Microsoft Edge favorites check box could not be unchecked in backup or transfer mode.

  • Changed/Fixed:
  • In some cases, there could be duplicate entries in additional folder list in a restore job.
  • The program could ask several times for adding public items to the current restore job
  • When used from a USB flash drive, the program performs some jobs very well and someday it hangs and does not work any longer. This does not happen when using the program on hard drives or SSDs. This specific problem's cause is still unknown. This may be due to some 'autobackup.ini' configuration file corruption on the flash memory. Starting from this build, the 'autobackup.ini' file is copied to the temporary folder in on the current system drive in a first place, used by the program from there and finally copied back to the flash drive when closing. This should avoid such behavior. Feel free to send an inquiry to technical support if it still hangs on USB thumb drives.
  • Note for QuickBooks users : Some error reports received were about the QuickBooks license number grabbing feature with messages like "An invalid character was found in text content" or "Could not convert variant of type (Null) into type (OleStr)". If you are experiencing such issue, send an email to support.
