MultitrackStudio Lite Changelog

What's new in MultitrackStudio Lite 10.8.0

Jan 24, 2024
  • Samplerate conversion is applied behind the scenes if a song uses a samplerate which isn't supported by the audio device(s). (Mac, and "Windows" driver type on Windows)
  • "Windows" audio driver type: Automatically uses shared mode if exclusive mode isn't available. Newly recorded audio tracks align better with existing tracks. Soft Monitoring latency is a bit lower.
  • Effect, Instrument and MIDI Effect windows: there are now up/down arrows next to the Presets button. You can click them to step through the presets without opening the presets menu.
  • "Mute click track during playback" option in Preferences window.
  • The articulation settings from the Note Editor are now available in the Multi Note Editor too.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 10.7.0 (Sep 26, 2023)

  • New:
  • Mac: Uses MIDI-CI to retrieve program names and controller names from MIDI Out Device 1. MIDI-CI is part of MIDI 2.0. Works with USB MIDI 2.0 class compliant devices (requires macOS 14).
  • Can import .midi2 files (MIDI 2.0 Clip File).
  • MIDI Multi Effect.
  • Effect windows: S+Left/Right Arrow key closes current window and opens the first slot on the left/right that isn't empty. Works in Mixer Sections, and also in the Multi Effect etc.
  • Improved:
  • Sampler: improved .dls importing. On Windows you can now import the system MIDI bank (see the manual).
  • Note Velocity editor now tries to keep the vertical bars within the measure the note's in. The vertical bars will be narrower for measures with many notes.
  • MIDI 2.0: the new RPN 7 (per-note pitchbend sensitivity) is sent to MIDI Out Devices and AU / CLAP / LV2 plugins that support the MIDI 2.0 protocol.
  • VST3 plugins: MIDI controller info (names and which ones are supported) from plugin is used if it looks like the plugin implements this correctly.
  • Windows: Multi MIDI Editor doesn't have OK button for score view, so there's a bit more room for the score.
  • Windows: Multi MIDI Editor window appears a little bit taller, so it fills the available space.
  • Windows touchscreen: Note Velocity editor indicates which note you're pressing immediately, so you can see it without having to wait for the mode selector to pop up.
  • Windows touchscreen: MIDI controller editor / Automated Fader / Automation editor (Pro edition) 'draw' mode: the first bit you draw is now predictably smooth.
  • Windows touchscreen: External MIDI Instrument: swiping over the patch name box vertically increases/decreases the MIDI program number.
  • Fixed:
  • MIDI controller editor / Automated Fader / Automation editor (Pro edition): clicking to unselect could accidentally select a dot.
  • VST3 plugins: some plugins containing an editor would keep their position needle moving while the transport was stopped.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 10.6.0 (May 23, 2023)

  • New:
  • Remote Controls work better with effects/instruments. Pages of controls have better layouts. 'Find on Remote Control' option on rightclick menus of controls.
  • MIDI Controller editor 'view' menu: 'Other' submenu is now 'All', and contains all controllers, including the ones in the VIEW menu itself. This makes finding controllers using the search box easier.
  • The VIEW menu itself now lists the controllers that are actually supported by the track's current MIDI instrument. This isn't possible for External MIDI Instruments and plugins, some widely supported controllers appear instead for those. You can type 'used' or 'checked' in search boxes to see the list items 'with dots' or 'with a check mark'.
  • Automation Editor VIEW menu (Pro edition): parameters now always appear in the VIEW menu itself (no submenu).
  • Plugin parameters that aren't supposed to be automated are no longer listed. Plugin parameters can have clearer names (depending on the plugin). You can type 'used' or 'checked' in the search box to see the list items 'with dots' or 'with a check mark'.
  • AU plugins: MIDI output can be MIDI 2.0 (requires macOS 13).
  • CLAP plugins: Preset menu now lists the plugin's own presets.
  • VST3 instrument plugins: note names defined by plugin appear in Drum Editor.
  • MultitrackStudio Instruments: Sine Wave instrument now responds to polyphonic aftertouch.
  • Sampler supports MIDI 2.0 per-note pan controller.
  • Matrix Sampler supports pan MIDI controller and per-note aftertouch ('poly aftertouch'). Also supports MIDI 2.0 per-note volume, pan and expression.
  • Keyboard Mapper can now convert incoming controllers to NRPN.
  • Multi MIDI Editor: the score view now has a System Spacing setting (click a clef on the left to access it).
  • Also, the system spacing now takes the actual notes into account. As a result you can see more systems simultaneously.
  • Multi MIDI Editor now simply remembers the state of the 3 editor mode buttons in the bottom left corner (it tried to be smart instead until now).
  • The MIDI 2.0 resolutions (16 bits for velocity, 32 bits for controllers etc.) are now preserved in MIDI files used in tracks. The high resolutions do not appear in exported MIDI files. NRPN parameters are used for this, similar to how MultitrackStudio stores per-note controllers in MIDI 1.0 files.
  • MIDI values that are 7 bits in MIDI 1.0 are now displayed with one decimal place, unless the decimal is zero (60.9, 61, 61.1 etc.). This applies to note velocities, controller values, aftertouch etc.
  • You can rightclick a Note Editor window's Velocity fader and choose Type Value to enter values like 60.9. The controller editor's Dot Editor accepts values like 60.9.
  • PatchMap files can define names for MIDI channels. They appear in the External MIDI Instrument window channel selector dropdown menu.
  • Onscreen MIDI Keyboard: Matrix layout pads display note names. The names depend on the MIDI instrument that's responding to the keyboard. The Keyboard Mapper is taken into account.
  • Onscreen MIDI Keyboard: Slider menu controller names depend on the MIDI instrument that's responding to the keyboard. Controllers that are actually supported appear bold.
  • Onscreen MIDI Keyboard: Presets and Layout menus now have icons.
  • Onscreen MIDI Keyboard: Supports presets.
  • Onscreen MIDI Keyboard: New 'Fourths' layout. Has 8 rows of cells, supports Glide and supports playing multiple notes on a single row.
  • Onscreen MIDI Keyboard: Guitar, Bass and Violin layouts now (optionally) support Glide.
  • Onscreen MIDI Keyboard (Mac): added 'Finger Vibrato' and 'Use per note pitch bend'.
  • When a song is saved for the first time the program settings are now saved too, so the song will still appear at the bottom of the Song menu even if MultitrackStudio crashes.
  • Fixed:
  • MIDI "poly mode" controller messages were sent instead of "all notes off".
  • Remote Control didn't handle certain incoming note-off MIDI messages correctly.
  • MultitrackStudio Remote preset didn't map the Add Group/Add Effect Return actions.
  • Error could occur on closing Master section audio view using the X on the left (using the Desktop layout).
  • Various other improvements and fixes.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 10.5.1 (Dec 29, 2022)

  • Improved:
  • EQ: preset menu items show a small version of the curve you see in the EQ window.
  • Note Velocity Editor: with the Drum editor you can now make just a single instrument appear in the Note Velocity Editor by clicking an instrument name on the left (so it's highlighted).
  • Grid bars (above the editors) now show marker names instead of just a triangle.
  • Sampler: importing .exs files works significantly better. On Mac .caf files are now supported, including consolidated ones.
  • Remote Control: MIDI device selectors are now in the Remote Control window itself.
  • CLAP plugins: supports a few new draft extensions.

  • Audio effects no longer emit old reverb tails etc. when the effect is un-bypassed.
  • MIDI effects: 'Apply to track' option can now generate MIDI controllers etc. (it used to do notes only).
  • Mac: AU plugins can now receive MIDI 2.0 protocol messages (requires macOS 12).
  • MultitrackStudio Instruments: synths have a MIDI effect slot. Some sounds use a Poly Modulator.
  • MultitrackStudio Instruments: synths respond to MIDI 2.0 per-note Timbre controllers (controls Resonance).
  • MultitrackStudio Instruments: synths respond to MIDI 2.0 per-note Attack and Decay controllers (values at start of note count).
  • MultitrackStudio Instruments respond to MIDI 2.0 per-note Release Time controller (value at note-off time counts).

  • Tuner: pitch detection is more reliable, meter is easier to read, reduced CPU usage.
  • Easier mapping of effect controls to Remote Control knobs: tweak an effect control using the mouse, and then click the Remote Control Bar. The effect control is now highlighted in the selector window, and you can click OK to map it.
  • Remote Control Bar now has more than 8 sections if the remote control is set up to use more than 8 mixer sections or effect knobs.
  • External MIDI instruments: patchmap can now be set to 'None', this may be more convenient than using a patchmap for a different device.
  • External MIDI instruments: the Bank:prog box now accepts something like MSB:LSB:2 (the bank will be calculated from the MSB and LSB values).
  • Clip Shelf: parts can now be dropped anywhere (rather than only on the 'Audio/MIDI Clips' header). You can now drag files from Windows/macOS to the Clip Shelf. Songs remember whether Clip Shelf is visible if 'Save everything in song' is on.
  • Comment / Lyrics / Chords editor windows: Ctrl++/- (Windows) / Cmd-+/- (Mac) shortcuts zoom text in and out.
  • Fixed:
  • Remote Control: Info button was disabled for MMC preset.

  • VistaSound (Windows) and CoreSound (Mac) Audio Input/Output Control windows now have a level fader if the audio device supports this.
  • Changes are effected immediately: no need to click OK. (Note: the AsioSnd Audio Output Control still works the old way)
  • Web Browser control surfaces:
  • The Control Surface Settings window features Web Browser (Phone) and Web Browser (Tablet) presets. Once a preset is loaded MultitrackStudio's network address is shown, you can type this address in your phone or tablet's web browser. The phone/tablet must communicate via WIFI (3G etc. is not supported).
  • Chord track improvements:
  • The Chords editor has been improved
  • Automatic capitalization.
  • Unrecognized chords are underlined in red.
  • Now supports '|C F|' instead of '|C - C - F - F|'.
  • You can type '\' instead of '|'.
  • Tab/Shift+Tab take you to the next/previous bar.
  • Chord tracks (MIDI tracks generated from chords) have been improvement significantly as well. Using the Add Track menu's Chord Track option you can create MIDI tracks from the chords. Chord tracks can be used to make sure the chords are OK, or to quickly create backing tracks for practicing a guitar solo etc. Bass, Piano, Organ, Strings, Guitar, Banjo and Drums tracks can be created.
  • Other:
  • Windows 8 tablet support: several improvements. Most notably score editors can zoom vertically, and track editors open 'full size' when running on a small screen.
  • Tracks can be routed to audio device channels directly, just like Groups and Effect Returns (Pro Plus edition).

  • Patchmap files can now specify 'initialization sysex'.
  • (Mac) Custom patchmap files can now be placed in the user's Library/Application Support/MultitrackStudio/PatchMaps folder.
  • Added keyboard shortcuts for transport cycling: Ctrl+F7 (Windows)/Command-F7 (Mac) sets cycle end marker, F7 starts cycling to cycle end marker.
  • Edited audio track files can be saved to file with original file name (for example: Piano.aem can be saved as Piano.wav).
  • Various other improvements and fixes.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 7.2.1.0 (Oct 19, 2012)

  • Transport cycling: stereo audio files could cause program crash.
  • Cycle recording: after a couple of cycles the Overview Bar no longer showed part after cycle region.
  • Drum editor: Redo could cause exception error in certain situations.
  • Song Properties-->Clean Up: deleting a .aem file could in rare cases cause crash when editing this track again.
  • Control Surface: track Play/Rec buttons could be toggled when this shouldn't be possible.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 7.2.0.0 (Oct 4, 2012)

  • The user interface can now scale down to a smaller size if screen estate is limited, so MultitrackStudio can run comfortably on the new 10-inch Windows 8 tablets several manufacturers have announced.
  • In order to utilize all the space provided by a large monitor there can now optionally be multiple columns of mixer sections. There's a "Multi Column Rack" setting in the Preferences window.
  • This new feature can be used for multi-monitor setups as well. In this case track width is automatically adjusted to fit a monitor. Multi monitor support has been improved by making sure secondary windows don't appear "on the fold". On Windows full screen mode now fills all monitors which where covered by the main windowCycling transport can be started by performing a click-and-drag operation on the overview bar thumb
  • Click the thumb:
  • Immediately click the thumb again, but this time keep the mouse button down.
  • Now move the thumb to the point where you want the cycle to end.
  • Release the mouse button.
  • Note that this click-and-drag action is a variation on a doubleclick, which starts the transport without cycling.
  • Click-and-drag works on the editor needle thumbs as well, so you can quickly cycle the part you're interested in.
  • Automation editors (Pro Plus edition), Automated Fader effect and Vocal Tuner key editor can now be used while the transport is running.
  • Transport position indicator and overview bar now show bars automatically if there are any MIDI tracks (can be switched off in Preferences window). When you start cycling using the overview bar it snaps to bars automatically, so it's easy to cycle a couple of bars.
  • Score editor supports transposing instruments (Bb clarinets etc.).
  • "Ultra Dark" color theme. On Windows the Light theme is replaced with a new High Contrast theme.
  • "To Song" control surface action, intended for playing backing tracks during live shows.

  • Improved VST/AU plugin compatibility (Melodyne).
  • Various user interface improvements (redesigned transport counter and group selectors etc.).
  • BPM tappers are now embedded in windows like Add Click Track, so you don't have to click the Tap button first.
  • A Control Surface can now have up to 64 channels (was 8).
  • Narrow vertical strips next to the mixer sections are removed, this makes the vertical scrollbar easier to use. The Clip Shelf can now be made visible using the Studio menu.
  • Editor and transport units (bars or seconds) are now stored in song files.
  • Removed "Large Meters" setting from Preferences window. Meters now become large automatically if there's room for them.
  • EQ effect: 1/3 octave and critical bands spectra now show vertical bars rather than lines.
  • (Windows) VST plugin causing exception error will automatically run bridged next time.

  • Master Limiter's RMS meter didn't work at 192 kHz samplerate.
  • A couple of other fixes.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 6.32 (Jan 24, 2011)

  • Some VST plugin windows were too small in version 6.31 (Albino 3 for example).
  • The Pitch Bend Range setting, introduced in version 6.3, now has no effect on Waldorf VST plugins because Largo uses the MIDI RPN controllers for other purposes.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 6.31 (Dec 22, 2010)

  • New:
  • VST windows better support plugins that change size.
  • VST GUIs get scrollbars if they're too big for the window/screen so they're still useable.
  • VST windows: SideChain boxes are now on the right rather than on the left. Looks better and saves space. (Pro Plus edition).
  • Lite edition: Added fade in/out to MultitrackStudio Instruments "demo" noise bursts. Hopefully this stops people thinking it's a bug.
  • Fixed:
  • Sampler: keys had wrong pitch if pitch bend range not equal to 2 semitones.
  • MultitrackStudio Instruments: loading preset that includes track effects could cause error.
  • Multi MIDI editor: drum instrument selector could cause error.
  • Cosmetic issue in Contact window method selector.
  • VST output mixer wouldn't close with escape key.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 6.21 (May 24, 2010)

  • New:
  • MP3 encoding: a "lame_enc.dll" file in the "Program Files\MtStudio" folder can now be used for MP3 encoding. This feature was added because ACM codecs may not work properly in 64 bit Windows.
  • This forum post tells you more about the MP3 encoder.
  • Fixed:
  • Some small fonts looked bad with Windows DPI settings between 96 and 112.
  • Song files (.hdr) had issues with some Asian Windows versions.
  • Audio/MIDI devices settings couldn't be saved on a (very) small number of computers.
  • Chord and Lyrics windows: the Keybrd button was present even if not in touchscreen mode.
  • Clicking overlapping markers has been improved.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 6.2 (Apr 21, 2010)

  • 1. Effects improvements:
  • 1.1 Improved Guitar Amp effect (Pro Plus edition only)
  • The Guitar Amp effect sounds much better and uses significantly less CPU power.
  • Listen to the demo mp3, which was made with nothing but the Guitar Amp and the Reverb effect.
  • The tube models have been improved, and there are now 7 mic positions per amp model to choose from. The Combo UK and Stack amps now have some extra buttons for more variation. There's a "Shrill Kill" knob to tame glassy sounding guitars.
  • Guitar Amp window
  • 1.2 Improved Saturator effect
  • The Saturation effect wasn't exactly the most impressive member of the effects family. It has got a major overhaul and is now called Saturator. The Tape program now has some more knobs, and now models HF compression, LF "bump" and flutter, besides distortion. The Tube program models a transformer-coupled tube preamp.
  • Saturator window, tape program
  • 1.3 New Mid/Side Effect (Pro Plus edition only)
  • The Mid/Side Effect lets you apply effects to the Mid and Side parts. The incoming stereo channels (left and right) are converted to Mid and Side parts. Then any effects or level changes are applied. Finally the Mid and Side parts are converted back to left and right channels.
  • Mid/Side Effect window
  • The Mid/Side Effect can be used to correct problems in a full mix. In a typical pop song lead vocals and bass will be in the Mid part exclusively, while many backing instruments are in the Side part or in both parts. An EQ is the most commonly used effect. You can use it in the Mid section to EQ the lead vocals, for example.
  • 1.4 New Vocal Removal preset
  • The new Vocal Removal effect preset is a vocal remover built with a Band Effect. The Mid Band includes a Stereo Effect with a Phase Inverter effect in order to remove the sound at the center of the stereo image. As a result, the mid frequencies at the center of the stereo image are removed. The Bass/Mid and Mid/Treble knobs can be adjusted to keep as much bass and treble as possible while still attenuating the vocals sufficiently. Vocal Removal only works if the audio signal is stereo, the vocals are panned center, and there's not an excessive amount of stereo reverb on the vocals.
  • 2. MIDI Instruments improvements:
  • 2.1 Improved Electric Piano instrument
  • The Electric Piano instrument sounds better and features a new "Sticky Hammers" model. Bass and Treble knobs have been added.
  • 2.2 New Bass instrument
  • The new Bass instrument offers both fingered and picked bass guitar sounds.
  • Bass window
  • 3. Other:
  • MIDI "Key Aftertouch" support.
  • Better soundfont compatibility.
  • VST output mixer gets scrollbar if the channels don't fit the screen.
  • "File Save" dialogs now use the file type you think it does.

  • Sidechaining VSTi outputs to tracks sometimes didn't work (Pro Plus edition).
  • Multitouch screens: scrolling the main window vertically could change the track order.
  • .lst files (made with version 4 or older) could be deleted when undoing the first edit.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 6.0.0.0 (Oct 23, 2009)

  • added TOUCHSCREEN SUPPORT
  • Half-speed recording
  • Automation / MIDI Controller editor improvements
  • Manual audio input channel assignment
  • Onscreen MIDI Keyboard

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 5.2 (May 20, 2009)

  • Notes are nicely spaced horizontally. This is essential for readable music notation. Note that this means that the notes no longer 'line up' visually with other tracks (the bar lines still do). There's a one-bar 'helper grid' when adding or moving notes.
  • There's a row of buttons which determine to duration of new notes.
  • Time signature changes are shown in the editor like you'd expect them to be.
  • There can be key signature changes throughout the song, they too appear in the editor the way you expect them to.
  • Quintuplets and septuplets. More triplets.
  • Less overlapping notes and other layout improvements.
  • Smarter handling of unquantized notes.
  • And, last but not least, the Multi MIDI Editor now does notation as well!
  • MultitrackStudio 5 introduced the 'lasso' which can select multiple notes. Version 5.2 makes this feature more prominent and more powerful.
  • The Notes Editor, which pops up on clicking the editor's EDIT button if multiple notes are selected, now has Dynamics, Humanize, Quantize and Legato controls.
  • The MIDI editors can work in one of three modes:
  • Select Part: works just like an audio editor, ie. the mouse doesn't "see" the notes at all.
  • Select Notes: clicking a note selects it, pressing the mouse button in "empty space" and moving it lassoes notes. Selected notes can be moved.
  • Add Notes: clicking in "empty space" adds a note, clicking a note selects it.
  • Moving the selected note(s) is possible as well.
  • Three new buttons in the bottom left corner of the editors can be used to switch mode. The Alt key can be used to temporarily switch between Select Notes and Add Notes mode: in Select Notes mode you can add a note using the Alt key, in Add Notes mode you can lasso notes using the Alt key.
  • Besides making the lasso more prominent, these modes also reduce the risk of accidentally adding notes. Note that the Select Notes and Add Notes modes can do more than their names suggest, so you don't have to switch mode very often.
  • MIDI controller and automation editors now have 3 modes as well: Select, Add and Draw.
  • Dragging audio/MIDI between tracks now snaps to the original position if you're close.
  • Pianoroll/notation editors: lasso shows name of lassoed chord, if any.
  • Drum editor: notes appear like diamond shapes.
  • Drum editor: "select similar notes" can now work on selected notes only.
  • Number of first bar can be -9..1, allowing for various numbers of count-in bars.
  • Audio and Pianoroll editors can zoom vertically.
  • Editors: mouse pointer behaves more in line with Windows standards (when dragging etc.).
  • Editors can do standard Windows style "click at start, Shift-click at end" selecting.
  • Add Click Track: "Accent on Beat One" is now "Bar Accents", and does a bit more to make the click track sound more pleasing.
  • Time signatures can be typed instead of using the up/down buttons.
  • "Extract temp from track": beats can represent 3/8, 7/8 etc. (not just 1/8, 1/4 etc.).
  • Effects can be bypassed quickly by clicking the slot while keeping the B key down.
  • Tuner effect has been redesigned for better visibility from a distance. New per-note offsets let you create custom tunings.
  • "Export MIDI Tracks" can optionally include lyrics and/or markers in the MIDI file.
  • Tested with Windows 7 RC (both 32 and 64 bits).

  • A couple of other fixes

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 4.31 (Dec 10, 2007)

  • New:
  • Support for Frontier Design's AlphaTrack control surface.
  • Improved:
  • Multiple Core CPU support: all instances of some "bad" VSTi plugins are now run on a single processor to work around their flaws.
  • Hardware Control Surface still works if another program is active.
  • Fixed:
  • Convolutor's Mix button wouldn't mix mono input to the right stereo channel if a stereo IR was used.
  • Multiple Core CPU support: effect sidechaining could lead to buffer-underrun messages if softsynth tracks where involved (Pro Plus edition).
  • The "Mix down to file" option caused an error message if the Punch button was on.
  • Random noise when using VSTi plugins which expect audio input.
  • A couple of other fixes.

New in MultitrackStudio Lite 4.30 (May 1, 2007)

  • New (Recording):
  • Cycle Recording: recording multiple takes automatically. Works for both normal and punch-in recording.
  • Improved punch-in recording: you now can hear the existing parts before and after the punch-in region while recording. The recorded signal can be monitored all the time or in the punch-in region only. (Works for audio and softsynths, not for external MIDI synths).

  • Loading a Multi Effect in a slot now loads the effect that was present in the slot in the Multi Effect.
  • Dragging a Mixer Section to the Effect Presets shelf section creates a Multi Effect preset containing all the mixer section's effects.
  • Unified Selector: all effects appear in one list which can be text-searched. This includes the native MultitrackStudio effects,VST and DX plugins, Convolutor impulse responses and effect presets.
  • New (Synths):
  • Wheel Organ sounds more realistic (Pro Plus edition only).
  • New "Electric Piano" synth (Pro Plus edition only).
  • Create simple sampler patches easily: you can now drag a part from an audio track editor, an audio clip from the shelf, or an audio file from Windows Explorer to a Synth Slot. A sampler patch will be created from the audio part automatically.
  • Sampler can import sfz files (OGG compressed audio files not supported).
  • Dragging a Track to the Synth Presets shelf section creates a Synth preset with the track's effects included.
  • Unified Selector: all synths appear in one list which can be text-searched. This includes the native MultitrackStudio synths,VSTi and DXi plugins, sampler patches and synth presets.
  • Other new features:
  • Audio and MIDI files can be dropped on track editors. This is very useful for plugins like EZdrummer.
  • Audio edits can be removed from .lst file in a track's properties window.
  • Mixdowns are now compensated for the delay which may be introduced by effects in the Master section (like the Master Limiter), so any track bounces are in perfect sync.
  • The VistaSound driverset (for WaveRT drivers) now supports multichannel playback (not recording) in the Pro Plus edition. It's now included in the MultitrackStudio installer and it's the default driverset on Vista.
  • 32 bit floating point .aif files and AIFC-type fixed point .aif files supported (Pro Plus edition only).
  • Audio engine can now use up to 8 CPUs.
  • Fixed:
  • 32 bit .wav files didn't properly clip overloaded signals.
