Font Install & Backup

Being creative can keep you for hours on end in from of the PC since it can be used for just about anything. For instance, writing can be enhanced with an abundance of different fonts, to give the text a bit of personality. These are kept in a system folder so they don’t get easily damaged, and with applications like Font Install & Backup, you can have an extra copy around in case something goes wrong.

A neat thing is that the application can run from the moment the download is finished because it doesn’t even need to be installed to properly function. This means that you can carry it around on a USB flash drive to use on other computers as well. What’s more, the target PC’s health status remains intact, because registries are not a dependency.

The main window shows up with several controls at your disposal. The process is simple, and you can either back up the entire system font collection or install others with little effort. Choosing to create a backup only requires you to select a destination folder, and a bit of patience because it can take some time if the collection is abundant.

It’s best if you pick an empty folder for backup because what the application does is simply extract all fonts from the corresponding system folder, and copies them to the specified location. It’s a thing you can do yourself, but the application wants to make it easier. Also, you might want to archive the entire folder, so it doesn’t get infected with malicious programs in the meantime.

Installing fonts is done pretty much in a reverse manner. In other words, your effort narrows down to select the folder that holds the fonts you want to install. Drag and drop can’t be used, but you can paste one or more folders. Sadly, there’s no built-in search function to look up other fonts online.

Windows comes with a staggering amount of fonts by default, but changes are the collection doubled in the meantime, and it’s close to impossible to keep track of all of them. Here is where Font Install & Backup comes in handy, creating an extra copy of your font collection, just so you can easily install it on other computers, or after a fresh reinstall of Windows.
