Macaw

Macaw is a comprehensive application functioning as a real-time audio composition environment, that can also be used for sequencing audio files, editing songs or adding effects to a live performance. It offers a SoundFonts loader, enabling you to work with basic instruments and categories in a consistent format.

This piece of software provides you with several advanced tools for music composition, namely the 'Sequencer', 'Synth', 'Sampler', 'Wave Editor' utilities as well as an 'Audio and MIDI Setup' panel.

The 'Sequencer' is basically the area where audio files can be edited, providing you with access to clips, notes and other details of a song. It contains a 'Tracks' section, a 'Clip Editor', an 'Events List', a 'Project Info' utility and a 'Tempo Editor'. The numerous editing panels allow you to customize all aspects of your song.

The 'Synth' is designed to load and play plugins, useful during live performances, as it enables you to hear the sounds you produce as they happen. You can also create a full-on external multi-channel MIDI device. Moreover, you can play music using the computer keyboard, record your playback and create plugin configurations.

The 'Sampler' basically functions as a MIDI device or mapper that is integrated into your operating system. However, all the synthesis and effects occur inside the program, thus providing you with more control over all sounds and instruments; in return, it does require a lot more CPU.

With the 'Wave Editor', you can record, load, export and edit a variety of audio files, such as WAV, MP3, OGG, AIFF or AU. It offers forty built-in effects and presets, enabling you to produce professional-quality music with the least amount of effort.
