The General Preferences tab allows you to customize the application's behaviour according to your needs and taste. 

The Contact list tab in the Preferences window lets you tweak various options related to your contact list. 

The Messaging Preferences tab. You can specify the display name, the messaging style and formatting and some predefined replies. 

The Shortcut Preferences tab allows you to assign or remove keyboard shortcuts to different actions of the program.
