Ramdisk

Conjuring new storage space out of the blue may seem like a neat magic trick but the truth is that it can be easily done using RAM that is not generally in use. More than this, pulling off this kind of feat can have a positive impact on overall system performance.

Ramdisk is a simple solution designed with this purpose in mind. However, it is an old program with restricted applicability because it was intended for operating systems predating Vista. As such, it should work on old machines, especially on those running on 32-bit with more than 3GB of RAM because anything above this value cannot be used.

Chief among the advantages of RAM-based storage is speed comparable to what a solid-state drive can achieve. The performance of read/write operations is simply amazing.

The interface is simple and straightforward, with all the options within easy reach and easy to understand.

After installing the RAM disk you can define its size in bytes, the drive letter and its type. The flexibility of the program permits making it a RAM drive, fixed or removable media storage.

Before deciding to rely on this type of storage you should keep in mind that the effect of this affair is only temporary because of the volatile storage property of RAM and once the machine is powered off the data located on the RAM disk goes away.

Although Ramdisk does bring advantages on a modern operating system it can be used on older machines. Among the alternatives that can be used on newer OS versions there is ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver and Dataram’s RAMDisk solution.
