Ihave been using One Care for about 6 months. I am impressed as it is better than I expected. It is very easy to use, my computer runs much better with One Care then with Norton, Kaspersky, Trend or McAfee. Little problems I had been having have been disappearing, like printer problems. I was concerned with the protection capabilities, but I am now at ease with this program. I have a years subscription for Norton 360, but Norton always has some problem cropping up, Live Update problems, The Firewall doesn't stealth all ports & on & on. So Thats why I tried One Care. After 6 months I reinstalled 360 & NIS 2008 to check to see if One Care had missed any virus/spyware. My system was clean. I have been researching One Care to learn as much as possible to be sure I wanted to keep it......facts beside the point that I really like the program. Recent tests show that One Cares overall malware detection rate is 96%. Nortons is 96.5 and Trend Micro is at 87%. PC Magazine/World state One Care is Great at keeping Malware off a clean machine & rate it equal to 360. A British Test gave One Care a better mark then ZoneAlarm at keeping External attacks from getting thru to your system. Unlike Trend or McAfee spyware is unable to disable the One Care Firewall. One Care is doing more behind the scenes to fix issues with your computer than most people are aware of. I agree that One Care still needs improvements, but especially if you run Vista, One Care runs extremely smooth on Vista.....Norton, Kaspersky, ZoneAlarm, Trend all had annoying little conflicts ...spooler subsystem stopped working...etc. Ever since running One Care my system has run smooth, error free and Malware Free. When I reinstalled 360 to double check One Care, once again little errors started to pop up. I finally decided to dump 360 even though mu subscription had months to go, in favor of One Care. I feel comfortable with One Care's protection. Its Easy to Use, and my system runs Great with it installed. I still double check its protection by ocassionally running SpySweeper to check for spyware, and running Firewall/Browser tests....and have not found any reason to mistrust One Care. I can only say that since I have been running One Care on my system, my computer use experience has been much more enjoyable with fewer little annoying problems. I am sure there will always be someone trashing One Care in various reviews ( like you will see about most security suites ), but I am very happy with it and feel It will only continue to get better with new update. I'm not a complete computer novice, and have used just about every security program out there, but after a while it is nice to have a program that makes your system run well, provide decent security and Doesn't Cause more Problems than it solves. |

"Well that friggin' dog don't hunt."
I saw the announcement for Windows Live OneCare and figured I'd give it a try. Its release was timed to coincide with Vista's, so why not.
I'm running a corporate copy of Vista x64, and when I tried to install the application after downloadiing, it bombed saying that my operating system wasn't supported, that I needed to be running Vista or XP.
Okay... I am running Vista. In fact I just installed it so its about as virgin fresh as you can get, unencumbered by other software's negative impact on the O.S. Presumably the problem here is that when Microsoft's OneCare checks for a compatible operating system it can't actually discern the right operating system from the wrong one.
This opens up a whole slew of ramifications. If Microsoft's programming is so bad (see Vista's UAC for an example of "bad") that they can't even tell which O.S. the application is trying to be installed on, and its a Microsoft O.S., then I've got to question just how good OneCare is going to be. I mean, I'm going to trust it find viruses when it can't even find the Operating System? I'm gong with a "no" as the answer to that question.
These Microsoft guys must be burnt out. I'm just not getting the sense that there's any paradigm-shifting concepts coming out of Redmond lately. I guess after you're the richest guy in the world, or you work for the richest guy in the world, everything is too blasse to actually be paid attention to. |
