| GUI:  Features: Ease of use: Value: | | | FDM has the most important features in a download manager: The ability to click a download link and forget it. Unlike Orbit, when you click a download you (optionally) hear a sound indicating your D/L started successfully. When the D/L completes, you hear another sound. If the D/L stalls for any reason, you hear a sound indicating an error. The above features make the program truly unattended, and you never have to look at the tiny icons in the tray to keep tabs on the D/L. On the negative side, the default options are not so great, and the setup options screens are unnecessarily large and complex. Not sure I like all the torrent features, because It bloats the software. I wish there was a light and portable version. Still, compared to the partially lame Orbit and Adware-ridden FlashGet, I think it is the best Freeware D/L manager. |

Has a remote control server, so that you can download torrents and files remotely, you can protect it with a password.
The upload manager, to upload your files (free) to wikifortio.com, itīs sort of a rapidshare.
Does not crash very often and does not bug out when your files are at 99% like flashget.
Works flawlessly with Firefox.
AND itīs free.
PS. I advise you, however, to Disable 'FDM Community Options'.

I'm using FDM for over a year and never had any problems with it. This program is translated in many languages so probably to yours to. Besides that you get product with lots of useful futures.
One of them is "FDM Community" which let's you express your thoughts on particular download, rate it or even warn people from downloading it.
You can -of course- turn it off in Option or when installing it.

This has NOTHING to do with recording your every download! It's NOT 'Big Brother' and definitely NOT a Spywere. I suggest reading this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware before making such claims. |

It is a stupid idea and even more stupid it integrate it into software as a default install.
Talk about "Big Brother"!

This software invades privacy - spyware.

It has almost all the features one needs to effectively manage downloading files from Web & FTP sites. It supports downloading from sites when your username and password are required for access: a must have for any vaguely serious downloader.
Free Download Manager easily rivals most payware download managers.
It would be perfect if it would let you "browse" a Web site: this feature is only available for FTP sites. Also, an effective site mirroring function would be darn handy.
All-in-all, though, you can't go wrong here. |

I love how it mimics FlashGet...it does it quite well.
Program loading gets kind of sluggish if you insist on keeping your list of previous downloads in the program. Its suggested you clear those out to keep the program fast....
Admins are active on the forusm...so the program has a good future ahead of it.
The password manager is excellent...it stores all your passwords to sites you use passwords to download for. FlashGet on the other hand only lets you specify one password at a time.
True, this might be a security risk...I dont know how the passwords are stored though...probably encrypted. So Im not worrying.
I like FlashGet a little more though, so thats what im using...
A little faster in thersm of the program (not the downloads)...and some other little things that it has that FDM doesnt... |
