I tried to install this new version, but every time i wanted to start it, the program freezed, so I had to shut it down. The interface is the same stupid as in the earlier version and I don't believe there are any other improvements. I used to use this program a few years ago, but of the files I really wanted get there were only one or two sources, and the people who shared them sometimes had really slow connections, so I had to wait a lot to get anything. The admins kick you because you are blonde or you have blue eyes or just because they are depressed a bit, or any other reason without any logic. The users sometimes disconnect you (or themselves from the hub) when your download just started. There are TOO many rules to connect to a hub and there's no logic in the rules either. For one hub you have to share 50 MB of files and you must have three slots to upload and you can connect to five other hubs, on the other you have to share 50 GB, you must have five slots, but you can connect only to two other hubs and so on. Though it doesn't really matter, because mostly the same files are present on each hub: the bigger the hub is the more people share the same files. And most of the shared files are available on any other network that hasn't got these stupid limitations. The only good thing in this network is that the admins check the files so there are no fakes or viruses that ed2k is full of.

I wouldnt say this Tokar. I think that DC++ is the best p2p client u that u can find! I prefer StrongDC++ which has segmented downloading, so the speed is no more problem. Than people think that they will download a lot of viruses and fake files, but its not true! On DC++ u have to connect on "hubs" and every hub has some admins. These admins take care of their hub really good so u have a really little chance to find viruses or fake files, because people with this things are kicked from the hubs or even banned.

So my last words: if u want a p2p client that is fast and safe and with full of features, try StrongDC++!!

P.S.: the newest one is on ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/strongdc

The value of this software has gone down the tubes significantly in the past few years.

When the Direct Connect network first showed up, DC++ was a boon. Neo-Modus's software a complete piece of crap, and DC++ was the light. This was also when the network was safe, and share requirements were a little lighter.

Nowadays, the network, while being the largest in terms of file and shared file size, is plagued with feds.

The network is hub driven, meaning its pseudo-decentralized. I say that because while there is no central server hosted by neo-modus or something, utilizing the network requires one to connect to a "hub" which is a single computer running hub software to provide the connectivity between people. Without the hubs, there is no way for the network to function. But because there are so many hubs, its sorta of decentralized. But all the feds need to do is shut down the hub and the network falls.
A lot of people run hubs on their conventional Cable Modem ISP...and people I know have been issued notices from their ISP to shut down the hub because of all the bandiwdth they were using since its such a bandwidth hog. The of course shut down the hubs.

There are two kinds of hubs in my mind. Ones that dont have a share requirement, and those that do.
The ones that dont you are more likely to find feds and "bad" people. So while you probably arent sharing much, or anything, you will run into them.

Lets say you do share something though. The list of what you are sharing is available to every person in that hub...whether you like it or not. Thats how the network works. You can search for stuff using the search function, or you can download someones file list to see what they have. That is how the feds are able to catch people with stuff.

The hubs that require you to share a lot are a little safer since obtaining a share size of 100 GB or more requires some work.
Most of these hubs make sure that you do it legitimately as well.
There are such softwares out there that can spoof your share size...the admins try to clean these people out, but these are the leechs in the hub, and probably the feds and not all of them are cleaned. Then they also clean out the dopes who share all their ripped DVD's, no idea why, but thats just how it is. They also clan out the dopes who share their installed programs or games....those are of no use to anyone. So basically you need a boatload of music, or illegal software or such to get those huge shares.
Once you get into the channel you will be with a bunch of people whoa re sharing the same things...so a lot of stuff is as your fingertips. The problem is that the queuing system is user defined. So you might be in a 20 person queue...so you gotta wait.
Its not fun.
One thing DC++ improved on from the original Neo-Modus client was multi-sourced downloading...but unfortunately, a lot of stuff on the network is available from a single source, so your speed is quite limited.
But as i said, the spoofers can get in here quite easily...and im sure the feds can find some way to make big shares...so even these hubs arent completely safe. The only hubs that are trully safe are those that are personal ones between a network of your friends, but of course not much is shared in that case :P.

Ever since version 0.163 of this software, it has gone down the tubes. Stuff has been removed such that you cant do certain things. For example in versions 0.163 and earlier, you could highlight every darn hub in the list, and join them all...of course you would risk getting banned from a few of them for being in too many hubs at once (the software reports to the channel how many hubs you are in...admins of the hub like to have people who have a high ratio of upload slots to hubs...like 3:1 or better. Below that, you get kicked). After that version, they removed that nice fun feature.
Whats the point of joining that many hubs? Well, when you are in one hub, the search only searches files in that hub only, not the entire 260,000 person network. So the more hubs you are in, the more of the network you cover and the more search results you will get.

And since the software is open source, you will soon find out that about 20 other clients form the source have been made...usually including the "C++" part of DC++ in the name of their software (e.g. BCDC++)...

I got tired of the slow downloads, the lack of file scanning to maintain the integrity of the network (because fake files are rampant), and the heavy heavy lack of protection against feds.

While this software itself is great, the network it connects to is going down the tubes in my opinion. Hence the "good" rating on the value.
