I usually tell my friends to find and download the individual codecs they need and to stay away from these 'packs' but thats all changed. That opinion was formed from several years of repairing damage caused by Klite.

Its clean and neat and everything works as it is supposed to. No adjustments are needed, install this pack and play your videos. I had 1 AVI that wouldnt play at 1st, then I used the shortcut provided to change the splitter, and it works now too. Thanks.

I strongly recommend you don't install the Vista Codec package if you need to play mp4 files in the "ipod" format... it will crash explorer and/or media player "every single time" you try to play the file. Because explorer tries to create a 'preview' it will crash explorer by just clicking on an mp4 encoded in the ipod format.
My system crashed over and over for days on end, stopping me from even being able to copy my mp4 files anywhere or do anything with them - I had to download an "explorer replacement" software just to be able to copy mp4 files.
Download K-Lite Codec Pack and it will fix everything.

I just installed Vista Codec Package 4.7.2 on my 64 bit Windows Vista Premium based computer with Windows Media Player 11 and it works great, provided you use the right Windows Media Player. With 64 bit Vista installed there are two Program folders in the root directory. One is called c:\Program Files and the other is called c:\ Program Files (x86). The Vista Coded Package works only with the WMP in the former. Whereas, at least on my system, a Gateway GT5676, the default WMP is the one in the (x86) folder. (They're actually the identical WMP program, if you go by the version number.) Make sure you put an icon to the right one on your deskop or pin it to the start button.

This is by far the most functional pack out there. NO adware or other things. Great job and Thanks a LOT.

After I downloaded the codecs pack, I tried to install it and got the message "error reading initialization file".I downloaded it again ,tried another installation in my Vista Business and again the same message.Any tip?

tonyterner the installation works fine so the problem is not with the .exe file you are downloading.

The program is an exe but wont run by itself and is asking what program I want to run it with. It doesn't run in media player so I have no way of installing it. Instructions for installation would be helpful but since there aren't any I can't install.

I'm trying out Vista x64 and I'm on my 3rd install,. I finally gave this pack a try. To bad I didnt try it sooner because it would have saved me alot of time. The developers can expect a donation.

I had to do one small thing after the install

The version of RealMediaSplitter.ax installed into
C:\Program Files\VistaCodecPack\filters is not copied it into the C:\Windows\System32 folder thus leaving an the old version there.

I manually copied it over, opened a CMD window and then ran
regsvr32 RealMediaSplitter.ax

Windows Media player would play video but not audio, Media Center wouldn't play TV. Load this codec package and everything works! Can't ask for any better!

o and btw I also had a problem getting the US installation to work but i read another users review here and downloaded from the RO mirror... worked perfectly

I had an older version of this from when i first got my vista machine and i finally got annoyed to the point where i was looking for a new package and saw this one had been updated... everything that wouldnt play in the older release plays great now.. A package!

Hey guys... the US download doesn't install but the RO version does. Don't worry, it is in English! :-)

It give message "Error reading setup initialization file" regardless of which way I run it. Looks to be the ticket but can't tell until I can install it.

This file doesn't initialize after download. Corrupt file?

Received same error- unable to initialize installer message. Tried running as administrator and saving/running from desktop. The error occured every way I tried.

Getting an "unable to initialize installer" error when I try to run the installer. I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit running on a Duo-Core Dell XPS410. I uninstalled the previous version of the Vista Codec Package before trying to install this one.
Please help! :)
By the way, Best. Package. Ever. Great way to solve the codec problem, and the last version really helped me out. I hope this version can get installed so I can try to iron out some wrinkles with some programs...

Why have I put poor for all, unlike the previous version 4.6.4 which installed without problems, and updated previous version.

This version tells me to uninstall 4.6.4 manually, and when then try to install says I can't as need to be an administrator, the system is logged on only with an administrator account.

In all a total let down from previous versions

If I manage to get it working will let you know, but if takes too long then won't post as should be just a simple installation

My computer will not let me download the program unless I'm an Administrator. I forgot how to log on as an Administrator, and it will no doubt take me a few hours to figure out how to do it. Please modify your program to avoid this requirement or tell people how to do the Administrator thing.

When I open the exe a small window comes up that merely says "Unspecified error". The title bar of the winodow is 7-zip.

I wanted to install Vista Codec Package 4.6.3 becaus I could not open .mov-Videoclips created by Nikon Coolpix 5900 Camera. The download of the package is o.k. but the execution of the downloaded file - even in administrator-mode - stops at 88 % readiness with "data error". Since I had to remove my old Codec Package before starting the execution I have now no Codec at all! How can I download my old Codec Package Version?

Before I installed this I had a bug with playing MP3 files because the "tag" was compressed, update of codecs has gotten round this program, vista after first install is virtually codec free methinks.

Seems ok so far, I'll post an update if it messes up my system.

I installed the codec pack , It does play avi,divx but it also keeps crashing my computer so had to uninstall it

I was able to download it but I cannot install it. Everyitme, I click on the software to install it a black windows pops out for a second then disappears and nothing else happends. I tried to install by installing as an asministrator and the same thing happends. How can I get it going?

installed it so it would play a DVD, it still doesn't play the DVD. Hope this doesn't bung up my computer, one thing different is it plays streaming video which used to open in wmp now in realplayer.

PROBLEM: Whenever I open the .exe file it just flashes a cmd screen and blinks away. I'm not sure if this is because I hadn't uninstalled any previous codecs, but I can't find any anywhere. Any help? How do I find my codecs?

I tried downloading the Vista Codec package which came across fine and seemed to extract ok.
My .AVI files still would not open. I ran GSPOT which shows what codecs are installed on the PC and it showed about 290 installed but no INDEO 5.x codecs.
Someone has mentioned running REGSVR32 IR50_32.dll to get the Vista registry to accept the codecs but that just fails.

This worked great for many video files that I have been having trouble with once I followed the directions and unisnstalled all my other codecs/decoders before installation. However, I still cannot play certain audio files that were created with Sound Recorder from XP, something that I would have expected Windows to be able to do on its own.

I had installed the vista codec pack about a year ago and everything worked great. Now all of a sudden Vista media center won't play any of the files. I get codec errors. I installed the most recent version of vista codec pack and it doens't work. what's going on? Was there a mic rosoft media centre update pushed out that over wrote all the codecs?
