I searched, I got Sqirlz Morph. Voila, I could see frame by frame distortion. This is a freeware with no side effects.

For a freeware program the features are surprisingly good and the
interface is as easy to use as they could possilby make it, just point and click and move a couple of dots and the morph is done!
I've been put off by other morphing programs because of over-complicated menus - often chock full of weird unidentifiable icons that could be paintbrushes or mutant ants but Sqirlz was easy enough even for me. Everything is kept clean and simple and the instructions are blissfully free of the usual documentation about how to do advanced stuff that 99.9% of people will never have any use for.
It's not perfect, it did take me a little while to get the hang of making smooth loops but having the satisfaction of being able to quickly create morph sequences (without really knowing what I'm doing!) makes the learning curve a lot less painful. I like this program a lot.
I would definitely recommend this as the number one choice for anyone who wants to try out morphing for the first time.
