| GUI:   Features: Ease of use: Value: |  | I'm currently using OpenOffice.org version 2.4.1. I've been using OO for over 2 years now and haven't had any desire to switch back to MS Office. I even have a copy of MS Office 2007 and haven't bothered to use it since OO suits my needs A to Z.
OO isn't as polished as MS Office, but with each new iteration it gets more features and more powerful. Although MS Office sets the standard for office suites, I don't think its advancing much anymore. (I mean really, how much more can you do with an office suite?) Hence, OO is fast catching up to MS Office and should eventually be as powerful as the MS offering.
The price for OO is an added bonus--it's hard to beat free! Also, the program has extensive online resources to help resolve any issues you might have.

It has just as many features, even more actually, such as converting documents to PDF, which has been very useful. There are some errors when opening files of foreign types but overall they are a small price to pay for a free alternative with so many functions. |

Hi frnds,
i have one doubt regarding SpreadSheet Opening in Windows Platform.
Can u clarify it?
i uploaded a OpenOffice SpreadSheet (.sxc)in windows platform .now i want to download that file. But when I click that download link of that file .it is not opening ,in the particular correct xls(Spreadsheet) format.
its opening that file with some mixing of junk values. i saved that file as .sxc format before uploading .
But if i renamed that file as .xls extension means then i can easilly Upload and downloding also done properly.
Its opening the file in Correct format .any one can you clarify this doubt Urgently and send me the code (java Script code)

The finish line is in sight, but OOo refuses to dash for the finish line! The love fest with OOo is now officially over. I think everyone will agree the development team has had long enough to address the lethatgic loading issue. They have also had time to address the Power Point compatibility issue, which is preventing OOo from replacing MS Office as the de facto standard in schools and universities. Fix these 2 items, and the program will bite MS Office in the butt! Come on team, FINISH IT! |

| | GUI: Features: Ease of use: Value: | | Actually, OO.o isn't very easy to use, because of the tons of features, anyway, I still love it. It's preety fast, if you set 500 MB of virtual memory. However, the interface icons aren't so nice. A bit more improovements needed for interface, so it would be easier to find what you want. It's better than MS Office XP, but needs many improovements to be better than MS Office 2003, but keep in mind, OpenOffice works on Linux, Mac and more operating sistem!
So far, it's very good for me :) |

An office suite must be designed to work well even on slower systems. When i first started to work in this program I had a feeling of "this program needs more then 512 ram to run at it's best". I was not satisifed of the speed it worked even on my comp ( anthlon 64 3000+ , 512 DDRAM)
I would not change MO 2k3 for this. They will have to work more to beat MO. At optimizing the damn program. |

MS Word 2002 tends to get hung on the simplest functions, like closing a document, pasting, etc. OOo's Writer has never given me a moment's trouble. It's far less the mb than MS Office in size plus it's free. |

Hassle free installation (but if you want the OpenOffice icon you must change the folder yourself... minor quible) and the operation is very similar to the commercial counterparts of Corel and Works. The word processor seems to import/export WordPerfect files better than Word files but the "touch up" needed to fix your document is very minor when there is a glitch. The spreadsheet is NOT for scientific or engineering work that requires a high degree of accuracy (I say this because the program performs automatic rounding instead of giving you the calculated results). I don't know how the presentation program works but if it is as good as the other two applications then this is one heck-of-a freeware alternative to ANY commercial program. |
