I made the mistake of trying this the other day, I should've known better. Stardock's software is like Windows 95 when it came out; great features but terrible stability.

Simply put, it didn't work. It gave me an error message about the skin (QNX) I chose. So I shut it down with the task manager and deleted that skin. Started it up again and chose another skin. Same thing happened. After shutting it down yet again, I decided I'd had enough of this nonsense and set the uninstall to reapir it. Well, that was a total waste of code because it behaved absolutely no differently when I tried it yet again. Why they even bothered with a repair routine is beyond me.

This time I uninstalled it. As always with Stardock's programs, it left a ton of junk on my computer for me hunt down and delete; not just the Stardock program directory, but also a sub-folder in Common Files, another hidden folder in Documents and Settings (under my regular user's Local Settings\Application Data, a hidden folder) and about two hundred registry keys. I discovered a .dll in Stardock's Common Files sub-directory that won't delete. So I set Unlocker to delete it on start up.

When i rebooted, man, was I in for a surprise. My antivirus (Kaspersky's) didn't launch on start up and neither did WinPatrol. Plus that dll was still there. Sound suspicious? It should. I've rebooted twice since then, that dll is STILL there and I had to put a shortcut to Kaspersky's and WinPatrol in the start up folder myself. I guess I'm going to have reinstall both of them or maybe just reinstall Windows to fix all the damage Desktop X did.

In summary, avoid this program like the plague. Get Avedesk or something similar if you want widgets on your desktop. In fact, avoid Stardock - so far as I've seen (and I've tried Windows Blinds, object bar, icon packager, most their stuff) all of their software runs from cool-but-unstable to the absolutely disastrous. And if you ever need uninstall it your Windows installation will probably be permanently damaged. It’s popular because it *does* have cool features, not because it’s any good.
