To disable unattended connections attempts, just modify your core.cfg configuration file, which you can find somewhere in FlashGet directory.
Quite easy thing, included my diff dump below (changes between my config and the original one - with disabled share-url, eMule and BT features in GUI):

FlashGet is really getting things right with their product. The only things that makes still desire to use FreeDownloadManager and HiDownload are the following, which I hope FlashGets implements:
1) Password manager. FlashGet, which I dont mind, uses a global password. Its fine if you intend to download a lot from a single, static password guarded site. But if you download from many sites or dynamic password guarded sites, its a pain in the ass ot have to keep changing the password setting. FreeDownloadManager has this really neat password manager which remembers passwords for every site, and will update if you use a new pass on an previous site.
2) Download of non-mms streaming windows media content. FlashGet can handle MMS:// links, but it cant handle .ASX, .ASF, .WMX or streaming WMV. FreeDownloadManager can do streaming WMV but not the others. Thats where HiDownload comes in :P.
Other than that, they keep improving in areas that I wouldn't expect.
New XP style icons
BitTorrent support
I wasn't expecting either of those. All the better. Ever since they decided to make this a free product it has only gotten better... |

Been using flashget for 5 years, never had any problems with it at all, to tylermenzes I would say, you must have been infected before you installed flashget what other programs did u install just before flashget, and McAfee is not the best virus scanner its a system hog like norton, my system doesnt run slow and i have it running as soon as my system starts, i run roughly 7 programs at a time, and download using flasget, To dummyforbugmenot, their is NO spyware installed with Flashget 1.73 at all, cydoor has been removed as of 1.72 maybe 1.71, the banner has also been removed. The best downloader out there, and I have tried over 20 of them over the years. |

The license of this software should be changed from Shareware to Adware. What most of you dont know is that if you choose not to buy the software, and choose to use it for free, you are forced to see an Ad Bar at the top of the window...flash ads and all that junk.
The way those ads are delivered to your computer is by the infamous adware, Cydoor. But this isnt the conventional cydoor adware that drops the DLL file in the windows system folder. Its the embedded type, the same one that eXeem decided to use, and later dropped.
Upon opening FlashGet, it doesnt take the software even a minute to contact the cydoor servers. Once it contacts the cydoor servers it starts silently downloading the ads to the folder
C:\Program Files\FlashGet\ads\adcache434 (where C:\Program Files\FlashGet is where you choose to install FlashGet, the default location). Once there it copies all the files to the default cydoor ads location, C:\Windows\System32\AdCache...all of this stuff in this folder will be detected as cydoor by any antispyware program (Spy Sweeper, Microsoft AntiSpyware, etc.). But after the program deletes it, or if you decide to manually delete it, it will just restore itself by copying it from the adcache434 location in the FlashGet folder. If you get smart and decide to delete the ads in that folder as well, FlashGet will just contact cydoor servers again and redownload the ads...and you will have achieved nothing.
But, assuming you have no problem with the adbar at the top of the window...since of course software like WarezP2P and the sort have the same thing...
FlashGet is simply the best Download Manager out there.
Its so good that the freeware alternative, Free Download Manager, basically cloned its interface.
It has so many nicities that I use...
It supports FTP and HTTP transfer.
The only thing I wish FlashGet included, something that Free Download Manager does VERY well, is keep a list of all the logins I have used at certain sites I visit, such that I dont have to keep changing the default login information (by setting the default login information, i can automatically add all the files i want to download from a password protected site and for flashget to use that default login information on all the downloads). Once i change sites i have to tell flashget to use a different password. Free Download Manager on the other hand, sees what sites Im downloading from and sees the passwords I have used in the past and will suggest using them when i add downloads from the site.
I got rid of GetRight a WHILE back in favor of FlashGet, and i have never looked back.
Since Im still using it on a ad-supported basis, im actively persuing ways to block the ads...appending cydoor to my HOSTS file, blocking cydoor on my firewall...etc.
Its actually quite fun :).
4/5 because people are negative towards software embedding Cydoor...if you are one of those people go take a look at Free Download Manager (also available on SoftPedia). |
