The coming of age for Opera at 11.50.
Though I liked the earlier design a bit more, its nevertheless very good. But, also, everyone seems to be copying Chrome's "minimalistic" interface; it points to lack of innovation [IMO]. Thankfully, every aspect of the design remains configurable. You can even remove the 'Opera' button on top left corner if you want to.
I am 100% sure that since Broadband access is not what everyone has, Opera Turbo is a life saver for many.
Speed Dial, password sync are turning out to be very useful.
The browser is certainly very fast. However, I felt Chrome was even faster. This is not from any 'testing' but rather experience from real world usage scenario. But there are no privacy concerns; this outweighs speed comparisons.
Tab thumbnail preview feature is quite amazing as well!
There are plugins for Opera from VLC Media Player and even Micosoft Office 2010 [surprise].
Despite lack of extensions [like Firefox or Chrome], everything else can be changed - "about:config" is quite easy to understand and not as cryptic as Firefox's one. Its basically GUI based and things are very clear. There is also a 'Reset' button for every type of setting!
There are certain aspets which need improvement, though:
01. As compared to Firefox or IE, there is no 'direct' method of deleting browsing history; you do it using 'History' tab or 'Preferences'.
02. No 'Pause' button for Download Manager even if the link supports it.
Overall, the browser packs a punch. There are very few site incompatibilies, but its essentially the fault of the sites and not Opera. The truth is, despite being the most full featured browser, its the smallest of the big names.
It definitely deserves much more market share than it has [2%], but only if you consider v10.50 and later.
Opera is not as resourceful as Google, but if they can advertise a bit more, I will not be surprised if they gain more market share.
Bottomline: 92/100. |

Date: 01 May 2011, 00:23 UTC Overall rating: | GUI: Features: Ease of use: Value:

A fairly average browser and surely overhyped for its status. It is indeed the most sensible browser out there and the perfect tool for a lil web-surfing adventure. The developers have made sure to stay as clear as possible from add-ons, which I believe is an excellent move. This Browser is robust, easy to use and can be extremely fast too.
However it is not what I would call ‘the best’ though. Even on a dual processor 10GB RAM computer, this browser struggles once you have opened at least 6 tabs at once. Stuck tabs, slow loading and the bitter helplessness of the Turbo feature really lets this browser down. You get the feeling that they should have added an extra requirement to this software, stating that performance will eventually start to wear off independent of your hardware. Much of the features of this browser however are unique to opera only and are pretty good too. The speed dial feature is the silver lining of opera in my opinion.
It is a bit of nothing to everything, if I do say so. You can go online and witness the webpages load faster than you can blink your eyes yet once you have 6 webpages opened at once, this whole software starts to fall apart. The feeling is quite common to the one you get from buying out of an infomercial only to find out that the flaws hit home harder than the strengths of the product.
I won’t recommend opera, but I also won’t say that it is a bad browser. All I can say is that it delivers better than other browsers on the market today, but it comes at the price of limiting your usage to an almost optimum level. |

Opera is what a web browser should be. It's fast, has tons of add-ons, has attractive and customizable skins, its own e-mail program, the wonderful "Speed Dial" page (can add and access your most visited web pages with a single click at start-up), slick tabbed browsing, and so many other features that users will love. Before Opera, I had been using Firefox since the version 2 days. Now, I have no interest in going back to Firefox. What's the point? Besides, Opera runs smoothly without the crashing. Still has some compatibility issues with websites, and they still need to fix printing from websites (pages print strange or not at all, and cannot view all pages in Print Preview). Still, for browsing the Internet, Opera is the best way to go. |

I have been using Opera for the past 6 years. It was a excellent browser up to the version 10.10 after which the problems started. I shifted my browser to safari which was quite trouble free. I don't like the interface of Chrome and the slowness of Firefox. Internet explorer 8 is a useless product only a computer illiterate will click on the IE icon.
The new version 10.51 has a lot of bug relating to Cache management , Cookies, and several security holes. These issues has been reported to Opera several times but of no use. They should listen to what the users has to say or else they will perish from the world.
Been using Opera for a long time now and I'm still as happy with it as ever. Especially once it became free and they removed the banners.
I used Firefox for a while and it's a really good browser also, but once you get hooked on Opera, there's no going back.
They also have an ingenious email client integrated in the browser, which is something quite different from the average email software, but can be quite convenient once you get used to it.
The interface is better than IE and better than FireFox. it feels a lot like AOL Explorer, if you use that browser. It is really pleasing to the eye.
The toolbars are highly customizable. MUCH MUCH more customizable than IE, and a lot more customizable than FireFox. I think it is on par with the customization you would come to expect in all those IE front ends like Green Browser or Maxthon or Avant.
The options are a lot like IE and FF, but Opera, as an added bonus, gives advanced users a more advanced customization window, like FireFox gives you, if you type in "opera:config" in the address bar (minus the quotes).
Overall, Opera handles most of the web standards much better than FireFox and IE. Acid2 for one.
Obviously, like FireFox, Opera doesn't have support for ActiveX. In some respects its a good thing, in others its bad.
I think the best part of it all, is that there is a whole forum set up at the Opera homepage designed to discuss Opera, problems with opera, Opera wishes and all that business. IE doesn't have one of those, and nor does FireFox...or at least its not clear to me that it does, unless you want to consider the sourceforge project page forum as their "forum"...I hate the sourceforge forums...they are so hard to navigate.
They have forums designed for Opera Windows, Opera Mac, Opera Linux and Opera Mobile...different issues for each, thus different forums for each.
I really like how they take supporting of their pages very seriously. If you visit a webpage and it renders improperly, either you can report it on the forums, OR you can click the HELP menu in the program and click "Report a site problem". A window will pop up appended with the link, at which point you can describe the problem you see and send back the problems to the server for analysis.
Just recently, the Opera team has started a blog (one of the millions of blogs available at Opera's homepage) where you can find a weekly release of Opera 9.0 builds.
IE of course doesn't do this...FireFox does this, though...through CVS or something.
What is nice about the weekly builds is that they come as installers as opposed to something where you have to manually copy files and settings over each build.
In terms of speed, Opera smokes FireFox and IE. It opens faster, it opens pages faster, and it renders pages faster. This is not JUST personal opinion. There have been a lot of published reports/tests which show this as well...even the old Opera 6 and 7 versions are faster than recent IE and FireFox builds.
The only negative with Opera is that with all the speed you enjoy comes a lot of memory hogging. I notice sometmes when I have a lot of tabs open, Opera will be using 100MB of physical RAM and 100MB of virtual RAM. I dont think its a memory leak as much as it is Opera storing information in the memory to make the program run a lot faster than its counterparts IE or FireFox.
Interestingly, whether Opera is using 40MB total physical and virtual, 80MB, 100MB or 200MB, it still runs and opens at the same speeds...indicating that the RAM usage doesn't hurt the browser performance.
So basically, its an awesome browser, which comes with everything you want in a browser and everything you expect in a browser. It does all this while being the fastest browser on earth, in a very pretty interface, and with a development team which is HIGHLY accessible on its forums, and which releases a new build every week.
I dont know what more you could ask for.
In short, the only real negatives about this program are:
1) a high memory usage
2) like FireFox, no support for ActiveX
3) the ad removal, like FireFox ad block, has nothing on programs like AdMuncher
4) like FireFox, since the web was built for IE, you will find some pages here and there which don't render 100% properly (maybe 80-90% properly or something). I find that for most sites that dont render properly, they render 99% properly and its that one little graphic somewhere that is places on screen somewhere it was not designed to be placed.
I switched from IE to Opera full-time 3 weeks ago and havent regreted it since.
Of course, though, I still require the services of IE since website through my college force me to use IE.
So I suggest you all give Opera at least a try! |

[NB: All the following flaws have been present in multiple versions of Opera and/or recurr over multiple installs.]
~ MHT'S, Opera's single-file 'web archives' are buggy, have never worked for me [and I see forum complaints by others too] .
~ COLOR CUSTOMIZING is the best of any browser, but is also complex and buggy. You can change any color, true, but be prepared to go through many permutations and even adjust colors of something else to adjust the color you want.
~ FIREFOXS EXTENSION "UNDELETE LAST CLOSED TAB" doesn't exist in Opera [shift-Z doesn't work for me]. It can be maddening to accidentally nuke a page and be unable to recover it [Opera's Undo rarely works].
~ "GO BACK ONE PAGE" works through mouse gestures [draw L, or hold right mouse button down while clicking left one] but neither consistently works, and they dropped the simple keyboard shortcut "Z" [doh!].
~ OPERA FORUMS HAVE NO AUTONOTIFY. So you have to return to see if anybody answered your question.
~ OPERA HELP IS LAME. A general search engine will get you information faster. [And by the way, it's particularly pathetic that [with my color settings anyway] Opera's own sites are distorted [stretched out vertically, most elements glued to left margin.]
~ SCROLLING IS THE WORLD'S SMOOTHEST, BUT IS TOO FAST. And lacks speed adjustability. [Click scroll wheel mode is inconvenient.]
~ NO URL AUTOCOMPLETE. Go figure. Such a simple usability feature and if even Microsoft got it right..!
~ NO PAGE/TAB CYCLER [LIKE XP'S ALT+TAB, AND, SOON, FIREFOX]. I may be childish but I want one!
~ NO USER-SETTABLE WALLPAPER [Even just a few paper textures would be elegant. Any widget writers out there listening? And why no 3D/drop-shadows on tap [for text or images]? But these are feature requests, not beefs; i digress.
~ NO FLASH VIDEOS DOWNLOADS [neither widget works], going into cache is always a pain and can be very hard to find right .swf],
~ NO BULK DOWNLOADS LIKE FF'S DOWNTHEMALL. There is a workaround, but Downthemall is faster & easier.
~ PAGES LOAD JERKILY. Yes, standard, but why not build in a keep-first-section-fixed-onscreen-and-load-rest-out-of-sight, so page view doesn't lurch up and down!? Hard on the eyes!
~ ADD [& CHANGE DEFAULT] SEARCH ENGINE DOESN'T WORK, OR IS UNDERDOCUMENTED AND/OR IS TOO DIFFICULT. You get Ask.com as speed-dial, and Opera's choices of other engines on toolbar, and that's it, despite their claims to contrary.
~ BOOKMARK MANGER IS INDUSTRY [SUB-] STANDARD [when oh when will somebody deliver a drag n' drop interface so one can simply drag unsorted bookmarks into different folders!? Any developers listening?].
~ IF YOU FIGURED OUT HOW TO SET SITE-SPECIFIC COOKIES THAT SURVIVE 'DELETE PRIVATE DATA' CLEANINGS, WRITE ME! That can, for instance, screw up sites like Stumble Upon [PS: see my review for it].
~ MOUSE GESTURES are sweet, but if Opera did it first, Firefox does it better, via extensions. Opera's isn't user configurable. I want to be able to double-tap a mouse-button to go back or forward, instead of drawing an L, or typing a keyboard macro, etc.
~ WIDGETS [Opera's version of FireFox extensions] are ok, but they don't have the developer pool that Firefox attracts and Opera's interface is inferior.
~ NO AD BLOCKER. Some workarounds exist but they're difficult to implement and/or site specific. How I miss FF's "AdBlocker Plus".
~AND WORST OF ALL: OPERA MANGLES PAGES, loses formatting. They say it's due to their closer adherence to Web Standards but that's cold comfort [and even their own pages get scrambled!!]. If you want to see pages how their designers intended, Opera isn't for you, and, considering that they're already near their tenth version, it looks like it'll never be.
So i'm panning Opera? No, all the above is [except for ad blocker gap and page format scrambling] trivial in comparison to the following...
~OPERA IS LIKELY STILL THE FASTEST BROWSER [Chrome won't count till more than a stripped-down featureless testbed, and FireFox bogs down with the extensions it needs to match Opera.]. You can even fine tune faster!
~OPERA IS THE MOST SECURE BROWSER, according to independent security industry leader, Secundia. There's an Opera widget called Stay-Secure whose bar-graph displays Secundia's minutely updates of # security events in all browsers. I've never seen any appear for Opera, unlike the competition. Very reassuring.
~OPERA IS [THE MOST] ERGONOMIC BROWSER. From interface color tinting choices to Zoom-To-Fit [a very handy and easily defeatable zoom option unique to Opera], if you don't like it in Opera, you can change it.
~OPERA IS STABLE. To match [and sometimes surpass] Opera, Firefox needs extensions. But most destabilize Firefox. I used only a half-dozen and it crashed about once every 3 hours. This despite a specialized backup extension called FEBE, which also disappeared in action. :) I had to laboriously reinstall and reconfigure my extensions every time. The last time it lost crucial bookmarks so I was forced to give it up. And this on the same computer on which Opera ran and runs stably for years.
~OPERA IS SMOOTHER than other browsers; everything fits and works with everything else. Subtle, but real. It makes every other browser feel klunky. And no, I'm not a touchy-feely Mac type.
It has its flaws, most of which are so old I think Opera Inc. has a case of NIH [Not Invented Here]. But its plusses are so massively useful and ergonomically-implemented that it has no competition.
Unless you need some specialized feature available only in a FireFox extension, Opera rules. Try it- it has features and speed, but even more importantly, raw usability [no, cooked usability!]. Opera, a massage recliner with rockets. |

I've always been a big fan of Opera, mostly for its amazing speed, low system requirements and superb integrated package.
Still, lately I've been using Firefox 3.0 more. Why ? One reason: AdBlock plus. You can't surf the net these days without a gread ad blocker and there aren't any for Opera. Sure, there are some amazing stand alone alternatives, like Ad Muncher, but still, nothing beats having such a program integrated seamlessly into your browser.
Separate ad blockers take up extra system memory and may interfere with some ad-based mmo's, of wich there are quite a few these days. Sure, you can close it when you play something, but nothing beats having it integrated into the browser.
TBH, Opera is a great package, but I see one major flaw with it. IMO, it will never get truly competitive unless the developers decide to go open source. It's ordinary people that make these packages great, since coding has become such a complex job.
BitTorrent Client is pretty useless, since most sites ban any client that doesn't have "Utorrent" or "Azureus" in its name.
Mail is very nice, but who uses POP3 and IMAP these days, when webmail dominates everything ? And even if you have a corporate account, it will most likely have some form of webmail as well. Who wants to configure mail clients when you can just enter your name and password and read your mail ?
Mouse gestures are very nice, but still not as configurable as FF's 3rd party addons.
Acid3: really, who gives a damn ? I realize it's all about web standards and all, but what good it does to respect a set of standards that nobody else seems to care about ? With all its "compatibility", you'd think it would display all the sites flawlessly, but unfortunately, that is not the case.
To be fair to this great program, the number of unsupported sites decreases every day, but IE and FF will still display flash-heavy sites faster and more fluently.
I'm not trying to crucify Opera, because it's still great, but IMO the only way to achieve mass adoption would be to allow 3rd party addons (and I don't mean the useless gimmicks known as widgets)
Compared to IE7, it still wins by a mile, but FF is a better (more configurable) overall browser. |

I use Opera for 5 years , but I have also IE7 and Firefox installed on my PC, as I am a webdeveloper and I use the other two just for testing my pages in all the 3 most used browsers.I was always overwhelmed by the sheer speed of Opera, its ease of use, the straight forward and useful features. And if you think 9.26 is fast, just try the 9,5Beta because it's even faster.
The incorporated Mail client is one of the best I know, very fast and sincronizing my IMAP folders and downloading messages much faster than other dedicated Mail clients, such as Thunderbird, KomaMail, Reach-a Mail, etc. Newsfeeds are also availabe and the degree of customization is simply excelent and very easy to control
I know Opera is the fastes of them all ,has the most logical safety features that you can encounter in a web browser, a truly secuere and safe browser.
Memory wise, the new version has a smallest foot print than previous versions but bear in mind that also IE and Firefox are huge ram eaters.
I would not say only that Opera is the fastes browser on earth, I would say also that it is the Best Browser on earth |

After reading the review by "Tokar" I decided to give Opera another try. I tried it a couple of times in the past but was never excited enough to keep it. Mostly due to the fact that you had to deal with the ad banners or buy it.
I have been using Firefox for what seems like a very long time now. I like the fact that my Spyware/Adware and Antivirus software doesn't pick up nearly as many items as they did when I was an Internet Explorer user. For that reason, I almost exclusively use Firefox.
Now about Opera. I won't even begin to describe all of the features. Tokar has done an outstanding job as always giving an extremely good review and I recommend that everyone who might be interested in Opera, to scroll down a bit and take some time to read it. I will point out the following...
Fast download
Easy to install
Easy to use
Easy to customize
It's FAST!
The broadband speed test shows that Firefox is faster but you could never prove it by me.... Opera simply seems faster!
I've been playing around with it for most of the day (sadly enough, I didn't have much of anything else to do). I tried it with the game sites POGO and Candystand - did some downloading, read some news, did some general browsing. Messed around with features, customizing etc., With the exception of some text formatting issues at a couple of the news sites I was browsing, It truly is an excellent browser. I plan to keep it around and who knows, I might even uninstall Firefox. I never thought I would say that but it's a possibility. Even though I like Firefox, after today, I believe that Opera does a better job and has better features to boot.
If you have used Opera in the past, give it another try, if you haven't, now is your chance. It's well worth it!!
Take care!! |

After using IE for 6 years...and trying out different front ends...and giving FireFox a try, I think that Opera is the best browser on Earth. I really do.
This is coming from an IE guy who has been ripping all those FireFox diehards who say the FF is the best thing since sliced bread.
Everything about this browser makes it the best. It gives you an awesome look and feel, one that somewhat mimics Internet Explorer but not exactly, whlie giving you a lot of the features IE has, IE doesn't have, and ones you would find in FireFox.
These features include:
-tabbed browsing
-show links in page
-ad removal (this is new in version 9.0 Technical Preview 2)
-ability to block certain things from showing in pages (java, flash, images, etc.)
-complete toolbar customization
-RSS
-customizable search bar
-page zooming
The interface is better than IE and better than FireFox. it feels a lot like AOL Explorer, if you use that browser. It is really pleasing to the eye.
