Spyware Terminator is a useful free product if you find yourself unsure about what products to install to protect yourself from invasion of malware.
An important note I should raise up is that the HIPS component is rather mediocre, it asks too many questions even for safe programs. For this reason, I disabled HIPS and am only using its real-time protection. Not that the HIPS is sufficient, but that the HIPS is bothersome and unneeded (for me). What I really enjoy about this product is that it is one of the only freeware packages that contain an all-around basic security for home users.
It uses ClamWin with its own Spyware definition database and this in turn makes ST work very reliably. What's even more awesome is that you can disable the Antivirus (ClamWin) and use only its antispyware, you can do the same thing with the HIPS, leave it on or off with or without just the real-time protection.
-You can use ST for any purpose. If you just want a quick defense without any naggings, use ST without HIPS, and integrate ClamWin into it.
-If you already have an Antivirus working in real-time, I recommend disabling ClamWin as this can lead to a faulty incompatibility.
-If you already have a HIPS system active, I recommend leaving ST'S HIPS off as this can lead to a faulty incompatibility.
-Don't feel as if you are less protected with only the basic real-time protection shields active with HIPS off. In my experience HIPS is only good if you want to waste your time going through endless dialouges and is a waste of my time in general.
I wholeheatedly recommend Spyware Terminator for its versatile usage and overall very well maintained definition updates. |

Although every dot I put into excellent in my rate, this anti-spyware still in a very good overall rating for me. Why? because of there are many 'unknown' in ST database. I'm using the latest version but they still don't know avp.exe (Kaspersky AV) and SASENUM.SYS (Superantispyware system file) is a valid files!
Other than that, they did very good job in detecting other startup and services that my other security software missed e.g SASENUM.SYS valid file itself! I have KAV7, Comodo firewall, Winpatrol Plus, SAS free, Linkscanner lite and now ST, starting perfectly together with my PC without any incompatibility.
For now, I'm only using ST as my primary anti-spyware program with real-time protection with advanced profile, WITHOUT:-
1) Integrated database with Clam AV because I somehow still scare of compatibility issue with KAV7
2) No HIPS because Comodo and Winpatrol Plus already done that and is enough for me,
3) No Web Security Guard because i'm using FF2 full time with IETab, which is of course safer than IE7, integrated with SA, Linkscanner lite and some security add-on so it is perfect for me :). Also, because I doesn't want to have any problem with KAV7's Web Scanner.
FYEI, I'm using Win XP P4 3GHz 1.5GB.
No resource hog & no slow down speed of my system after installing ST 2. Fast full scanner for 2 80GB hard drive. Full of features including extra utilities e.g delete undeleteable file and analyze file. Excellent nice looking interface. So easy to use because you can choose a profile between beginner, advanced, and expert or no protection at all! Every button have good & detail explanation if you direct your mouse pointer to it and of course it's totally freeware!. Thanks Crawler Inc. for this great freeware! |

Warning Everyone! Please read this carefully!
When I use Spython Spyware remover from system mechanic pro. My system software had identify an adware! Its from "Spyware Terminator."
Here is the conclusion.
------------------------------------
Category: Adware
Fastwebfinder is an adware component that monitors internet browsing habits and distributes unsolicited advertisements based on the information it collects. The application typically installs by user consent; however, functions and methods utilized by the program are questionable and may not be explicitly addressed in the EULA agreement. Fastwebfinder may be associated with hijacked Internet Explorer search pages (typically to unsolicited and irrelevant locations, many of which include blatant advertisements and/or adult content), unsolicited advertisements (typically occurring as popup or pop under windows), decelerated web browsing, and general system slowdown. The application is distributed by Fastwebfinder.com, a known purveyor of adware systems and components.
This spyware application exhibits the following characteristics:
Connects to Internet
Attempts to establish outside internet connections. Spyware applications typically do this to download updates or report information to remote affiliates.
Displays advertisements
Displays unsolicated popup or pop-under advertisements. Such advertisements may appear with or without an active web browser.
Installs files
Installs numerous files needed for execution. With more files installed on the computer, malicious applications may gain greater overall control of the system.
Modifies the system Registry
Alters the system Registry by creating or modifying existing Registry entries. It is common for spyware applications to modify the startup Registry keys to enable automatic execution at system startup.
-------------------------------
I have found this problem! Please be careful, this is for your own good! But, spyware terminator company won't react to this problem!
If you want to help me, please report this message to other websites who distribute this software, and tell them about this adware! I'm counting on you everybody! |

Pros- ST is a free program which offers a viable Realtime Shield against malware. That alone makes it a very nice product.
Cons- I have recently tested ST's HIPS component using the Spycar and Advanced Process termination tests and the results were that ST's HIPS performed poorly. These tests essentially try to terminate a program (ST's HIPS failed 7 of the 9) and try to change the autostart and IE Configuration (ST failed 14 of the 16 tests). These tests were done in several different formats: HIPS enabled/Realtime Shield disabled, HIPS disabled/Realtime Shield enabled, HIPS enabled/realtime Shield enabled. In all tests it did not matter whether HIPS were enabled or not as the same results occurred. The Realtime Shield component was the only defense against these mock malware tests.
Based on that I would suggest that ST still be used as the Realtime Shield is a very good layer of protection against malware. But useres should consider concurrently using another free HIPS program. I would suggest either Dynamic Security Agent, System Safety Monitor or Prosecurity. The combination of one of these free HIPS programs alongside the Realtime Shield of ST will provide much more security than the HIPS of ST.
Also, a few other things should be considered. ST still has a fairly high rate of false postive spyware found in scans. What has worked best for me is to use a multi-program defense in which I scan with other programs such as SuperAntiSpyware, AVG's anti-spyware and Ad-Aware. In this approach, I essentially only use ST for its Realtime Shield protection.
The ClamAV could be used as a #2 on-demand scanner for virus problems but it is not recommended, at its present state, as a full time scanner. There are free anti-virus programs that do a much better job. Those include AVG, Antivir and AOL's Active Virus Shield. Besides, ClamAV seems to be a bit heavy in resource usage to be ran all the time.
There still is the affiliation with Crawler. So users should maintain a heightened sense of skepticism with tis product. And Crawler still promotes it spyware products ascan be seen on crawler.com. And if you have any doubts about their continued affiliation just check out ther "contact" addresses. As of last look the two were still conducting business out of the same offices.
But that alone should not deter someone from using this product. The Realtime Shield is rare for a free product and I wholly recommend using that feature. Just don't put all your eggs in one basket thinking the spyware detection, ClamAV and HIPS are good enough for today's internet world. There are better free products that can be used for those tasks. |

As of March 9, 2006, SpywareWarrior.com has de-listed Spyware Terminator.
Read it for yourself:
Note on SpywareTerminator: We originally listed Spyware Terminator on this page out of concerns that Crawler, the company behind the product, had established connections with IBIS, a well known adware distributor responsible for such adware programs as Wintools, Websearch, & Huntbar. Although we found no problems in our initial testing with Spyware Terminator, and while the vendor itself announced that it was exiting the adware business (1), we decided out of caution to impose a three month probation period before we would consider re-testing and, if warranted, de-listing the the product from the Rogue/Suspect list. During that three month probation period we monitored the behavior of IBIS and Crawler. At the end of the three month probation period we re-tested Spyware Terminator, again finding no problems serious enough to justify listing the program on this page. As the vendor involved has not been involved in the distribution of adware for many months, and as the program itself exhibits no problems serious enough to warrant mention on this page, we have decided to de-list Spyware Terminator from the Rogue/Suspect list and can no longer regard the program to be "rogue/suspect."
Note: not to be confused with Spyware X-terminator from Stompsoft
