Can't rate this since the instructions don't indicate if the 1 to 5 scale is good-to-bad or bad-to-good. There's also no N/A choice for value (in the case of free software) and for GUI on command-line programs. Very illogical.

Anyway, the tool appears to do a lot EXCEPT what I need it to do I need to WRITE ID3v2 tags, but that specific function is apparently not supported. In spite of having a lot of irrelevant stuff like file name renaming and "automatic" tag extraction, basic tag reading AND writing is not supported.

Hi! I'm triyng to use this program to edit all the tags of my music. I'v just done a long and hard work organizing all of it. Once finished I opened the program to discover that after I open it, it automatically close in less than a second. I don't know what to do, it's driving me crazy.

    Thanks for the help!

I'm very happy with this program. I downloaded some episodes of the Old Time Radio show "The Whistler," and was able to fix the tags in just a few minutes. I was able to set the single album name for all of the files with a single command, and also extract each track name from the file name:

    "../tag" --remove *.mp3
    "../tag" --auto --scheme "C T" *.mp3
"../tag" --album "The Whistler Discography" *.mp3
    "../tag" --artist "The Whistler" *.mp3
    "../tag" --genre "Mystery" *.mp3

The second line there says to set the comment and title based on the filename; the files were named like "470806 Dark Future.mp3"
    =)

For us programmers this tool is amazing, I have used it to pull all the tag data from the various file formats on my system into a single set of relational database tables. Now I can select and play music using any criteria you can imagine (using the richness of SQL) and send it to a squeeze box for consumption. What the files are called or which directory they are in is irrelevant, why spend half your life renaming and organizing your music! All you need to do is be sure it's tagged correctly using another wonder tool mp3tag.

I have been using computers since before the DOS days. I am very familiar with DOS. Yet, because the documentation of Tag.EXE was incomplete and inaccurate, it took me FOUR FREAKIN' HOURS TO FIGURE THE DAMN THING OUT. I almost gave up. It would've been faster to just copy and paste into the ID3's.

The Tag.TXT text file shows an example renaming SCHEME as A - N - T, but it does not show the entire example command line. I tried numerous times, even going to the author's, "Synthetic Soul", forum he frequents: Hydrogenaudio Forums. If you use a free email address to sign up, you can't even post for FIVE DAYS! Left on my own, I finally figured out the SCHEME I wanted has the following correct syntax:
    Tag --auto --scheme "X-A - T" *.mp3

Notice the quotes. Tag.TXT also contradicts itself when using slashes for SCHEME. At the top it shows a backslash and at the bottom, for options, it shows a forward slash. Although "-t ", "-f " and "--fromfile " are mentioned under options, I have no clue how to actually implement them. WHAT is "item=x"? How exactly do you use a text file and how do you match its lines up with the MP3 file ID3 info you're trying to change? The Tag.TXT file needs more complete examples with correct syntax.

While the program appears to work correctly, because of very poor documentation, its potential will never be fully realized. I recommend to Synthetic Soul that he correct and add to the included Tag.TXT file. Also, for SCHEME, I recommend a more robust implementation of the "X" option (text to be disregarded). I wanted to disregard the first 3 numerical digits of each MP3 which are followed by a {space}. Unfortunately, Tag.EXE can't do this. A DOS-type wildcard convention would help using "?"'s or maybe using "X" as single characters when there are more than one as in "XXX".

Tag was originally developed by Case (http://www.saunalahti.fi/~cse/files/).

Versions 2.0.40 have had minor amendments by myself.
