Cannot install it at all with Windows XP. Previous version required complete uninstall of 5 different Apple programs (iTunes, QuickTime, Bonjour, etc.) and manual deletion of remaining folders, and reboot, then it finally installed correctly. For version 10.5.2.11 I went through the same routine, twice, and it still fails to install. So I will try MusicBee, which someone recommended, and look for other music players. |

iTunes in Windows is a nightmare. It is after the infamous Real Player the biggest pile of s*** one could imagine.
The interface that other people think is so 'great' is actually quite bad, that is if you know something about interface design and don't want to annoy or trouble your users.
You see there are guidelines and conventions to guide developers, they are not be found in iTunes, though.
It does not use the theme you may have chosen, it does it's own thing and no you may not change that.
It is remarkable unresponsive and slow in almost all of it's aspects. Starting, compared to Winamp or the Windows Media Player is ridiculous. Even closing takes long. And even after closing it's services remain active. You won't need any of these three (Bonjour, iPod Helper, Apple Mobile Device) services at that point. It's also interesting that Apple was smart enough to automatically start the iPod Helper service but not the Apple Mobile Device service, which is responsible for interacting with your iPod or iPhone. So your device wont' show up, want it to show up? Great just start the service and restart iTunes, it's as 'simple' as that.
Features, right. Did you know pretty much every other media player has something like a 'Now Playing'-playlist which usually is even persisted meaning you can begin listing where you left off. Yeah, iTunes does not.
Price and Value, well its free so the price is alright. The Value though, is if you would not be force to use it, be simple not there.
The iTunes Store should also be taking into account as it's a integral part of the iTunes/iPod/iPhone experience. But I only say that, all the stuff you can get there, can be gotten elsewhere and [a lot] cheaper.
And for emphasis: I wholeheartedly conclude that iTunes is a [big] pile of s***!
P.S. As a software developer, let me tell you this:
I would definitely NOT want my name show up in the 'credits'.
I would definitely NOT put worked on iTunes for Windows in my CV, that simply can't be done without an apology and an long explanation. |

I downloaded version 10.1 and installed, well it did not perform as was announced, , It took over every single format for audio or video, and then I did uninstall it, and bingo, it did erase so many things that the computer could not play no even windows star or any program even NERO was unable to play music, to me is the worse ever expirience, Now I have to reformat the drive and install everething again, I will never try a CRAP like this again. |

As much as I used to love this program, in the last couple of years it's turned from a cute, cuddly little potbelly pig into the hog that ate Hoboken. Download size is now 168MB and counting - good grief! - and the program installs at least three (three!!!) resident executables that boot with your computer and sit there hogging cpu cycles and connecting to the internet whether you are running ITunes or not. At this point, I won't even install iTunes on a netbook or older system and don't even like running it on my new quad core. As a result I've been looking for a good replacement for several years now, sadly without any success - that is, until this month when a new version of MusicBee was released which is, simply put, awesome.
The best feature of iTunes has always been ease of use and intuitive design (and for some people, integration with iTunes store and ipod). MusicBee does not, of course, have integration with the iTunes store and iTunes is still slightly better than MusicBee in the ease of use area, but in my opinion MusicBee beats iTunes in pretty much every other area. Music Bee is small, light on resources, very easy to use, has pretty much every feature iTunes has (except iTunes store connection) plus many additional features that iTunes does NOT have.
If you have and ipod and/or buy most of your music and tv shows from the iTunes store, you will probably want to stick with iTunes. If not, I highly recommend you check out MusicBee. |
