| Portable FastStone Image Viewer 3.4 | Reviewer: bobad

This is a new program, not a portable version of Faststone Image Viewer. That's unfortunate, because FSIV is the best image viewer on the planet. Navigation is different, and not intuitive like the original. There are no pop out menus, which was a great feature in FSIV. Now for the good news: FSIV, while a little bit fat at almost 9mb, is all but portable. All you have to do is go into the settings, and set the associations to ALL. Compared to any other image viewer, Portable FSIV is very good. Compared to the original FSIV, it's barely fair. Use the real deal! |

CFP is probably the most effective free firewall out there. The features and options are endless. Having said that, the program is unnecessarily hard to use, and very obtrusive. That's really too bad, because the engine is rock solid. The options and settings menus are horribly complicated, disorganized, and unintuitive. A few people with plenty of time and the inclination can tweak it and deal with the endless popups, but I think the average person will very soon tire of it. Simply put, it will drive you nuts. Instead of following Symantec's example of building grand complications, I wish Comodo would follow the example of Ashampoo's free firewall. It's not quite as effective as CFP, but at least it's usable to the masses. My gut tells me that CFP will be popular among a very small core of geek tweakers, but the masses will reject it in favor of a PF that is less effective but easier to use. |

This program ranks pretty high in its class by default. There just aren't any good, fast, logical CD burning programs out there. Some are very good at burning music, some are good at burning data, and some even (sort of) burn copies. However, none of them really put it all together and do a good all-around job of burning.
I find CDBXP to work fairly well, and have a fair set of features. Version 4.x made excellent progress in reducing the size and bloat to an acceptable level. However, the program's VB6 roots is still apparent. The GUI launches very slowly, to the point of being annoying. It's laggy even on a blazingly fast, overclocked Core2 Duo machine with 2gb of RAM. I can't imagine how slow it would be on a Celeron or AMD processor. The first screen has a bunch of fuzzy icons with no text labels. I have to assume that's because the software is beta, I'm hopeful it will be improved. The worst annoyance of all is the complete lack of an Explorer shell context menu, which could greatly speed up burning data and ISO-type files. The CDBXP developer should seriously take a look at VSO's excellent "CopyToDVD" software. That program is an unparalleled example of what burning software should be. It's at the same time simple, logical, powerful, fast, and easy to use. Good luck to the authors of CDBXP. The software community needs their product, but with major improvements. |

FDM has the most important features in a download manager: The ability to click a download link and forget it. Unlike Orbit, when you click a download you (optionally) hear a sound indicating your D/L started successfully. When the D/L completes, you hear another sound. If the D/L stalls for any reason, you hear a sound indicating an error. The above features make the program truly unattended, and you never have to look at the tiny icons in the tray to keep tabs on the D/L. On the negative side, the default options are not so great, and the setup options screens are unnecessarily large and complex. Not sure I like all the torrent features, because It bloats the software. I wish there was a light and portable version. Still, compared to the partially lame Orbit and Adware-ridden FlashGet, I think it is the best Freeware D/L manager. |

This is a very compact, nifty, but rudimentary backup program. It's better than nothing, but just barely. It's an "all or nothing" backup, meaning that it backs up your chosen folders completely. There is no way to exclude files and folders that you don't want backed up. You may as well just use the WIndows Explorer and drag a copy of the folder to a USB flash drive or extra hard drive and dispense with the program. Also, the install program is wacky, and allows no custom install folder. Of course you can drag the Back2Zip folder where you wish, but that shouldn't be necessary. It does have a scheduler, so it is better than nothing. Give it a try, you may find it useful. In the future, who knows, it may develop into a fine little backup program. |

Excellent GUI, excellent options.
Unfortunately, it has a very slow and quirky scanning engine. It took FOREVER to scan my very fast Raptor 74gb HDD on a blazing fast 3.2ghz Core2 Duo machine! When it hits a corrupted file, it stalls, and you must start over. GRRRR! If you have below average hardware, expect to have a few cups of coffee while waiting for the initial scan to finish. The program folder size is absolutely huge, which is unfortunately becoming a trademark of Comodo.
HIPS will drive you nuts until it gets to know your apps, which is not surprising. I mean, you have to tell it that MAXTHON is safe, for goshsakes. Fortunately, HIPS can be deactivated if you wish, with some sacrifice in security. A GLARING weakness is the absence of an easy option to ignore false hits (or hits that are not false, but you know are harmless). In other words, it needs a whitelist that is easy to access. For example, I get a hit on a password revealer that I use occasionally in case I forget a password on a web page. I want to tell it to ignore that file, but must jump through hoops to do so. Also, the existing popup to "allow" an unknown file does not work. I guess I have "Permanently Allowed" the Maxthon2 and Ashampoo Firewall a hundred times!
I hope the above issues are remedied in later betas, because I really like the GUI and tray applet. Overall, the program shows great promise. |

Finally, an update! I was beginning to think that 10cent had killed the program.
FoxMail is potentially the best E-Mail program on the Web. It's light, fast, compact, portable, and has just the right set of features. In my opinion, a wonderful program is largely going to waste. I wish a more reputable and reliable developer would rescue the program.
Of course I wish for a good English translation, and a more rapid development cycle. A changelog with beta releases would also be more professional.
Try it, it's a very nice program, even with the obvious faults. |
