Gemini Rue

One of the best point and click adventure games of the past decade, Gemini Rue has been recently ported on iOS platform. Created by Joshua Nuernberger and published by Wadjet Eye Games, Gemini Rue was released back in 2011 on PC platform.

Featuring a compelling sci-fi story set in a dystopian world, the PC version of Gemini Rue’s only drawbacks are the poor controls and clunky combat system.

However, the port on the iOS platform was a very good idea, as the controls and combat now feel more natural on a touchscreen.

The immersive gritty atmosphere in the game reminds of Blade Runner cyberpunk environments. Speaking of which, Gemini Rue uses pixelated visuals bathed in shades of gray and other metallic colors, which masterfully adds to the sense of suspense.

In Gemini Rue, players take the role of Azriel Odin, a former assassin who now serves the law. His main mission is to rescue his brother Daniel from the hands of Boryokudans, a gang that controls most of the system.

You start on Barracus, one of the many planets in the system controlled by the Boryokudan crime syndicate, where you meet a person claiming he has information on your brother’s whereabouts.

In order to imprint a more dynamic gameplay, developers thought it would be wise to introduce a unique combat system.

Although, the cover-based shootout combat system is not among the strong points of the game, it surely adds to the sense of urgency and considerably increases the pace at which the game is played.

I can confirm the combat system works much better on touchscreen devices, which is another reason that you might consider purchasing this title on iOS platform.

Azriel Odin is not the only character in the game that you will be able to play with. Gemini Rue’s story is told from the perspective of more than one character.

As soon as players finish the Barracus segment of the story, they will be offered the possibility to play a second character, mysteriously called Delta Six.

Players can switch characters anytime during the game. This comes in handy when you are stuck with either of the characters and not sure what to do next.

Gemini Rue is all about the story. The poor combat system and somewhat clunky controls cannot make this game less enjoyable. These drawbacks are even less obvious on the touchscreen devices, which are made especially for this type of combat.

It is also worth mentioning the game mixes easy puzzles with more complex ones, so it’s almost impossible to get stuck in a certain area for too much time.

Gemini Rue is a unique adventure game that offers players glimpses to an alternative, not so bright future. The gloomy, gritty atmosphere in the game, as well as the compelling story and mildly-challenging puzzles is what makes Gemini Rue a “must-buy” for every fan of the genre out there.

The game is now available for purchase for $3.99/ €3.49 via App Store and it should be fully compatible with all iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices running iOS 4.3 and up. Check it out here.
