Stick It to the Man review on PC

There are a lot of puzzle platformers out there and quite a few have memorable visual styles, but Stick It to the Man brings quite a few new elements to that core recipe, including some clever mechanics about reading someone's mind, manipulating their thoughts, and using that knowledge to solve the problems of other characters.

The game was first released on the PS3 and PS Vita and recently appeared on the PC, bringing novel mechanics as well as a great visual style.

Does it deliver a memorable experience or should you stick the game into an easily forgettable place? Let's find out.

Help Ray ...
... and start reading minds

Stick It to the Man focuses on a regular guy called Ray who tests out hard hats for a living but gets possessed by an alien life form called Ted, which allows him to read the minds of people around him and steal certain things they're thinking about.

These things are extremely varied, from gears, to food, teeth, or even sleep, and you can slap them on other people or objects, effectively resolving the actual puzzles offered by the game.

These challenges are quite imaginative, as are the actual thoughts of the many different characters encountered by Ray during his adventure. Many contain hints towards solutions but others are just simply hilarious.

The world of Stick It to the Man is filled with all sorts of colorful characters, and it seems that Ray is probably the only one that's at least partly sane. Meanwhile, you'll meet lazy psychiatrists, Siamese triplets with a career in wrestling, and all sorts of other crazy people, especially in the insane asylum that will be explored in one of the game's different chapters.

Puzzles are pretty smart and quite imaginative, as you sometimes need to go through multiple crazy steps in order to reach a conclusion. Other times, however, solutions aren't that simple and you might be forced to consult walkthroughs online in order to continue progressing through the game.

In terms of actual platforming, it's quite good, especially since Ray is a nimble fellow and big jumps can be achieved by the giant pink "spaghetti arm" that's coming out of his head and allows him to read the minds of other people.

In case you get lost, you can also summon a map of that particular level, showing other characters that you encountered. Bear in mind, however, that on the PC summoning the map with the M key and then closing it with the Esc one leads to unresponsive controls. The only solution is to press M to display the map and then use M once more to close it.

Besides these glitches, getting around the levels is relatively simple, although you need to pay special attention to segments that feature agents or guards, as they can easily knock Ray out, causing him to respawn at the last checkpoint.

Stick It to the Man really stands out in terms of visuals, as the game features a cardboard cutout style, with pencil-drawn graphics and some really imaginative animations both during regular gameplay and in cut scenes. The style even promotes the actual gameplay mechanics, as you put stickers onto other characters to solve the puzzles, or tear down walls in order to uncover new areas and characters.

In terms of sound, the game also performs rather well. While the soundtrack doesn't really stand out, the voice acting is quite good, with the characters sounding great while not falling into stereotypes, for example.

Meet wacky characters ...
... and the mysterious Man

Conclusion

Stick It to the Man manages to deliver a great experience that's reminiscent in part of Psychonauts or Paper Mario, but it also adds plenty of different new elements, all finished in a great visual style that delights and works in terms of gameplay. While some bugs are still present, the game will certainly entertain you despite its short length.
