Data recovery software is essential to anyone who has learned that deleted files do not necessarily mean the end of the line.

While the focus is chiefly set on computers (e.g. Piriform's Recuva), this type of service has extended to mobile platforms as well, offering device owners the possibility of quickly reclaiming sensitive data.

EaseUS MobiSaver is such an application, supplying iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users with a fast method of getting back images, contacts, messages, call history, notes, bookmarks, calendar, and reminders.

Installation and interface

Setting up the tool takes just a few seconds, thanks to the standard wizard with uncomplicated steps. Note that installing iTunes is necessary for MobiSaver to work.

The unregistered edition shows recoverable items but does not permit users to save them to the computer. Unlocking this feature is possible for a $59.99/€37.7 fee.

The interface is suitable for novices and advanced users alike. Its main application window has a clean structure and intuitive buttons, thus facilitating fast and uncomplicated data recovery.

How to recover lost data

Provided that your iOS device is already plugged into the computer unit, you may initialize data scanning by following two simple steps: holding down the device's "Home" and "Power" buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds, followed by the release of "Power" while keeping "Home" pressed for about 15 more seconds. A brief animation is available as a tutorial.

Scanning data takes just a few minutes, during which MobiSaver installs a device driver via Windows Update, called Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode). Needless to say, users are unable to tinker with their device's contents during this time.

Recoverable information is broken down into categories: photos and videos (for each month), contacts, messages, call history, timelines, reminders, notes, bookmarks, and calendar. The number of deleted and total items is shown next to each group.

It is possible to preview content, display only deleted items, and select particular objects for retrieval (or everything). Pointing out a saving directory is enough to recover the chosen files. MobiSaver creates a new folder in that location, called "Export" along with an additional directory for each task (with date stamps).

Images are saved to JPG format, contacts to CSV, HTML and VCF (with their corresponding pictures to PNG), notes to TXT, while messages, call history, timelines and bookmarks are exported to the HTML file type.

In case the application failed to display the lost items you were looking for, it recommends retrying the scanning operation on previously created iTunes backups. The same steps described earlier are applicable.

The Good

Scanning for data and recovering it is done in no time, during which MobiSaver uses low-to-moderate CPU and RAM. The interface is simple enough to be fiddled with by users with limited experience in software applications.

It offers support for multiple platforms and both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, iPhone 3GS / 4 / 4S / 5, iPad and iPod touch devices (iOS 4 / 5 / 6 / 7), together with two GUI languages: English and Japanese. User documentation is available online.

The Bad

During Softpedia tests, MobiSaver was unsuccessful in its attempt to find any deleted pictures, even when all of them were just eliminated from an iPhone prior to scanning. On top of that, some recoverable information had missing text.

There is no kind of configuration set available, apart from checking for program updates. If you happen to return to the main menu while previewing data, it is required to restart the entire scanning. The "advanced mode" name is misleading, since there is no "simple" mode available. Plus, there was one failed attempt to enter it during evaluation.

The option to retrieve data from iTunes backups is redundant, since specialized software is not necessary to do this. Besides, Apple offers this service free of charge via iTunes and iCloud.

The Truth

The fact of the matter is that EaseUS MobiSaver is not as powerful as it claims to be with the 3.1 edition. The pricing is certainly not justified by the short array of features it provides. Users are prone to look for more effective software solutions when it comes to recovering deleted data from iOS devices, and which were not previously backed up.

EaseUS is hosting a 3-day unlimited giveaway campaign for MobiSaver until Saturday, October 19. Grab your free copy by clicking this link; all you have to do is enter a name and email address.
