Tools

With 20 utilities on board, this is the richest part of the suite. The slew of applets available covers everything from uncovering duplicate files, secure deletion of data, disk space analyzer, MBR backup and restore, file encryption and decryption to hosts file manager, registry defragger

or disk wiper.

And these instruments are just in the “Tuneup” section of the module. More instruments let you uninstall programs, check the drivers on the system or recover deleted data. For more information about the computer than what is available in “Home” screen, “Tools” has an entire section reserved for this.

It exposes plenty of information, starting with the name of the computer and the user, the time the system started, CPU type, BIOS, RAM (although our system enjoys 3GB,360 Amigo System Speedup detected only 1). System components and intel on the operating system are also available, just like the set of updates already applied.

File Recovery allows you to scan your hard disk’s volumes for deleted files. As it is the case with most such utilities, writing data on the drive you’re trying to recover from will render the application inefficient. Formatting the drive also makes it impossible for 360 Amigo System Speedup’s File Recovery tool to find deleted items and retrieve them.

On the downside, you cannot view all deleted data and choose what you want to recover as the applet imposes that the scan looks for a specific type of file only (MP3, JPG, AVI, TXT, etc.). Also, there is no possibility for multiple selection of found elements, making the recovery of large number of items quite uncomfortable and time consuming.

The uninstaller included in the suite is no fancy tool. It will simply detect and run the uninstall command that comes with each installed program. Hence, you have to run the registry cleaner in order to eliminate all traces.

As mentioned before, “Tuneup” section under “Tools” module is the richest in utilities. A pile of 18 applets awaits in this category, ready to tackle tasks such as finding duplicate files, defragment the registry, wipe an entire drive, or backup/restore the registry, files and folders.

Provided the large number of utilities included in “Tuneup” section our tests have been limited to the tools a regular user would use on a constant basis.

The duplicate finder included in the section is a simple one, and, as such, won’t verify the content of analyzed items having the same name and size. Thus, files having the same name but different content will be marked as doubles.

With Disk Analyzer you can find what files and folders take the most space on a selected volume. The scan does not take long and the results returned are accurate. You are given the possibility to browse through folders until file level. The details offered include size of the file/folder, number of files and folders a directory holds. For your convenience, the developer lets you view a list with the largest files only.

The file shredding utility uses no data wiping algorithms, but in our case it did a great job. All content can be overwritten as much as 16 times and recovery of the content failed during our tests. The only hint at the deleted data is the name of each file; you will be able to recover the files, but their content will be scrambled, so no detail will be available.

360 Amigo System Speedup makes available tools able to detect zero-sized files and empty folders. These worked like a charm in our case, as they scanned an entire drive and uncovered all the test files.

Defragmentation of the registry is another routine that has to be ran every once in a while, depending on the frequency of your installing/uninstalling programs on the system. The operation basically consists in compressing the registry data and eliminating any gaps.

This utility is as simple as can be as it lists the areas that are affected by the procedure and then cuts straight to the chase by defragging them. There is no beforehand analysis informing you of the current fragmentation rate of the registry. It all ends with a request for a system restart.

After going through all the steps of the operation we noticed no improvement and the registry fragmentation remained the same. The experience with this tool was similar to the defragmenter in the “System Cleaner” module.

If you want to keep your data safe from prying eyes, 360 Amigo System Speedup gives the possibility to encrypt/decrypt data. You won’t be able to select multiple items to encrypt in one run, but the process takes little to complete and does a great job; the same goes for decryption. All you need to do is provide the lock password and a hint in case you do not remember it when decrypting and start the operation.

We noticed that “Tuneup” section holds a backup tool for files and folders. This is actually the same applet included in Windows, so you can access it without the help of 360 Amigo System Speedup. Even so, it can be put to good use to protect your data from any sort of damage.

The bag of tricks 360 Amigo System Speedup is offers plenty of utilities to keep your system in good shape. On the downside, not all the applications included in the suite function as they should and in some cases flexibility has been compromised.

The Good

Ease of use for each of the tools bundled in 360 Amigo System Speedup, and the price of the suite are among the advantages of the program. The variety of the software offered and thus elimination of a wide range of problems that could keep the performance down are also to be taken into consideration.

It is an all-in-one suite that can be scheduled to run at user defined time intervals and deal with the problems automatically.

System restore points are manageable from within the program and you can back up the registry before proceeding to eliminating invalid entries. Also, you can create system restore points before and modification is made.

After Windows loads, if the program is set to start with the OS, you will be given the complete list of items that load together with the total boot time. Thus you can eliminate the elements that contribute to degrading the load time.

The Bad

Not all the applets work as they should. We felt the need of multiple selection in the case of tools such as File Recovery.

The list of problems range from poor file and registry defragmentation to inaccurate detection of the amount of RAM mounted on the system. Also, flexibility in the case of “Tuneup” section is not among the strengths of the suite.

More serious issues, like purging a user-defined folder or going through multiple scans and registry error cleaning sessions are also denting the value of the software.

The Truth

360 Amigo System Speedup bundle encompasses a myriad of instruments for bringing your computer in top shape and maintain its smooth running. However, in some cases the goal is not attained. But it also makes available tools you can rely on.

It is easy to use and with a little brush up on the utilities to offer more flexibility this could be one of the best gathering of system optimization utilities.
