When it comes to antivirus tools, there are always some heavy names that seem to be glued to the top (just like with web browsers). We tend to overlook lesser-known apps, but sometimes they will pleasantly surprise us.

In our opinion, this rule applies to Ad-Aware Pro Security. Part of a set of four versions (Free Antivirus+, Personal Security, Pro Security and Total Security), this tool is very quick at detecting almost all known malware agents to date, backed by a powerful real-time guard. It comprises a few handy security modules and scanning modes for users of any skill level.

Presenting the whole package

The app can be evaluated for 30 days without any limitations. At the end of this period, Pro Security may be purchased for €36 / $49.74.

The setup operation takes a while and requires a system reboot to finish. Those who already have an antivirus application installed on their computer are advised to exclude the real-time guard from the package and set Pro Security as a secondary line of defense against malware, in order to prevent any compatibility issues that will likely cause system crashes.

Apart from the core files, the program offers to install its own safe browsing module that ensures PC protection while navigating web browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox). It comprises a security toolbar that shows webpage ratings, blocks domains which are known to contain malware, and sets Lavasoft SecureSearch as the default search provider.

The interface's take on simplicity is indisputable, as Ad-Aware adopts an elegant look and organized structure. Rather than trying to make a fashion statement like other products in its area of expertise, this one prefers to blend in with Windows.

The primary modules are broken down into six groups on the left side of the screen, namely scanning, real-time safeguard, web, email and network protection, in addition to app management options. The parental control module can only be unlocked by purchasing Ad-Aware Total Security. In Pro Security, the “Home” area facilitates one-click activation/deactivation for the real-time shield and displays information on the last scan, definitions release date, total virus definitions and notifications (if any).

Scanning methods

Computer scanning can be performed in four ways (excluding the vigilant real-time guard): quick, full, custom and contextual. The first one looks only into known hiding places for malware such as active processes, the second covers all system areas by definition so it takes the longest time. The custom scan mode lets users handpick the exact locations and threat types to check for malicious activity, between archives, rootkits, email, processes, cookies, registry and boot sectors.

In addition to these, it is possible to perform deep and smart scans, as well as to include custom drives or directories. The last scanning mode can be run on any file, folder or drive via the context menu. Meanwhile, automated scan jobs can be scheduled on a daily or monthly basis, in quick or full mode, and at a specific time.

Scanning behavior

During a scan job, Ad-Aware shows the scan type and mode (manual or automatic), elapsed and estimated remaining time, along with the current file's path. The task can be paused and resumed at a later time. When any suspicious activity is detected, the files can be quarantined, deleted, ignored, or disinfected (attempted).

Once finished or canceled, scan results reveal the aforementioned information, in addition to total infected, deleted, quarantined, failed, ignored and disinfected objects. These details may be closely inspected in a report, which can also be downloaded to XML format.
Ad-Aware records all performed scan to reports, and they can be studied at any time. Viruses stored in the quarantine can be restored or deleted. Users may also create a list with paths and extensions to exclude from scanning, as well as modify the update frequency for virus signatures.

The protection modules

As the name says, the real-time guard is designed to identify infected files on sight, as soon as they are saved on the computer. It covers both local and network files, and can be disabled altogether or for any of these two areas.

Similarly, the web protection module deals with incoming threats across the Internet, for example, when users try to access a site that's actually crawling with malware. Apart from offering protection against known infected links, the tool also has a real-time anti-phishing defense system aimed at identity thieves (including credit card data).
Meanwhile, the email protection component addresses infected content in received messages when it comes to desktop email clients that use POP3/SMTP servers. Users may set the detection level to aggressive, normal or permissive (the risk of identifying false positives is increased in aggressive mode).
The last protection module dedicated to the network oversees the entire network activity to keep malware agents away from computers. It reserves several settings to advanced users, such as turning off the monitors for process modifications, Internet connection sharing and port-based hacked attacks, setting up a list of rules for managing app permission levels and another one with available adapters, as well as establishing the default action for any programs not included in the list (allow, deny, prompt).

App management options

All notifications can be hidden by enabling gaming mode, which allows users to enter fullscreen applications and carry on with normal activity without being interrupted by update or threat dialogs. Furthermore, notifications ignored throughout Pro Security's runtime can be analyzed and removed. All settings can be restored to default.

Performance evaluation

We put Ad-Aware Pro Security to the test on an Intel Core i5-3470, CPU 3.20GHz, 12GB RAM, 500GB Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 7200RPM, on Windows 8.1 Pro, in order to figure out its scanning speed and virus detection ratio. Default settings were applied. CPU and RAM usage was low. A local drive with 83,4GB occupied space was scanned via the context menu in 23 minutes and 55 seconds.

For the second part of the test, we submitted 12,181 virus samples for scanning. We barely got the chance to use the contextual scan mode because the real-time guard identified and eliminated 11,963 files, leaving behind 218 items (the virus samples were basically detected and removed as they were being extracted from password-protected archives). After running the contextual scan, it deleted 176 additional files, leaving us with only 42. Overall, the program had a success rate of 99,65%.

The Good

OS compatibility extends to Windows 8/8.1 (32- and 64-bit). The tool offers support for multiple languages and includes extensive help documentation.

Overall, the interface is pleasant and intuitive, accessible to all types of users.

All protection modules can be activated and deactivated with one click, so users less experienced with antivirus tools needn't worry about configuration to fully protect their systems.

Pro Security becomes non-intrusive by turning off system notifications.

During our tests, the application scored remarkably in virus detection rate. The real-time guard stands out among other antivirus applications.

The Bad

Advanced users who usually tweak every aspect of an anti-malware program may be slightly disappointed by Pro Security, since it automatically applies its own configuration set to most components.

The installation procedure is rather lengthy.

The Truth

Lavasoft may not be as popular as other developers dedicated to identifying and removing malware, but Ad-Aware Pro Security's database with virus definitions is quite large, and the real-time safeguard has excellent response time. Make sure to read our review for Ad-Aware Total Security to find out about the unlocked modules.
