Mobile devices are taking over the world. Nobody can argue with that. Day by day manufacturers find/invent a new utility or feature for making their product stand out into the eye of the public. The iPod started as a simple modern replacement for the much appreciated walkman from Sony. It made a revolution out of listening to music. Now it has video rendering capabilities as well. Who knows what it is going to evolve into.

Now it is time for video to get mobile and migrate towards other media than computer monitor or TV. Almost any modern portable device is video ready and getting that favorite movie on it is not too much of a problem provided that the right software tools are employed.

Aimersoft DVD Ripper comes at a price of $35 and is ready to provide you with the instruments necessary for making your DVDs suitable for rendering on any mobile device that supports video rendering. There is no trial period available, but there will be some limitations and restrictions imposed by the developer. These include applying a watermark of the software on the resulting video or limiting the audio to only three minutes.

With a glossy interface, Aimersoft DVD Ripper provides easy use of the application and effortless access to all the options available. As soon as you get by the registration screen popping up immediately after loading the program, you are welcomed by a starting screen
which displays the first steps to be taken in order to start your DVD ripping.

DVDs can be ripped directly from the DVD unit or, if you have it backed up somewhere on the drive, from a disk location. The only condition for riping the DVD movie from hard disk is to have the IFO file. After that it is piece of cake.

To tell you the truth Aimersoft DVD Ripper comes prepared for so many formats (both video and audio) that it would be a bit uncomfortable to enumerate them all. But itemizing the most important of them will give you an idea on its pervasiveness. The application can create rip DVD Videos into a myriad of formats like MP4, FLV, AVI, ASF, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, MOV, M4A, M4V, MPG, MP3, AC3, AAC, WMA, OGG or APE. All these are perfect for mobile contraptions like iPod, Zune, PSP, XBOX, Pocket PC and even the much-discussed, recently-released iPhone.

The program will optimize the video settings for each of the above mentioned devices so all you have to do is just select it and hit the big Start button in the lower right hand corner of the application.

In the lower part of the main application window there is settings area allowing you to choose the subtitle and audio language for the output result. An additional option lets you integrate these both in a single file so for an easier play on the mobile device.

The application is also equipped with a preview window in the right hand part of the main window. The video player is not top notch, but it'll give you a clue on the image quality of the movie. The only controls available are Play and Stop.

More options are to be found in the toolbar where accessing trimming, cropping and effects can be accessed with a single click of the button. For each of these three options you will get a live preview of the DVD going to be processed.

There is absolutely no complication in trimming a video as all options are setting the start and end time of the chunk of movie and hit OK button. Upon converting into the desired format the application will process only the trimmed part of the video.

In Crop menu the job is even easier, as you work with presets. You can choose to get rid of the top and bottom black edges, the edges on the sides, all of them or you can define your own area. The operation is easy as it involves a mere adjusting of the area in the preview by simply dragging from the correspondent points (the little squares).

With Effects the most difficult task is deciding upon one. Besides the presets available (Gray effect, Emboss, Negative and Old Film) you can also make some adjustments to the image in what concerns brightness, contrast and saturation. Volume can also be pumped up to 200% for better hearing.

Aimersoft DVD Ripper is not at all a complicated DVD converter and Help file is quite useless as the intuitive interface provides every tip possible. However, there are some downsides of the application. During testing we repeatedly tried to backup a DVD on the hard disk. The program did its job quite fast (a DVD 9 disc was completed in about 15 minutes) but only the VOB files were extracted and there was no way to view the subtitles. The video file on the other hand was perfect and had no Evaluation Copy mark embedded.

The Good

Very easy to handle, Aimersoft DVD Ripper makes DVD converting to the supported file formats a walk in the park. Once all the settings have been made all you have to do is wait for the process to complete.

Trimming, Cropping and Effects are a nice bonus if you want to add a bite of twist to your video. Also, with all the presets available converting the DVD for iPhone, iPod, PSP or XBOX playing is a piece of cake.

The user can modify the settings for the preset formats for better adjustment to the device the video is intended for rendering on.

The Bad

The duration of the conversion is quite long and sometimes it takes longer than watching the movie. During our last test we converted 2'35'' of video in a bit under four minutes (3'59'').

The Truth

Crop, trim, effects, snapshot taking (BMP and JPG only) and a myriad of formats to convert your DVD Video into. And all this with the least effort from the user. This is what Aimersoft DVD Ripper offers for $35. You be the judge of that.

Here are some snapshots of the application in action:

This company is terrible. I bought some of their software before and it did not work, at all. Then they refused a refund and wouldn't even admit that their software didn't work. They gave me the runaround and wasted a lot of my time. Bad, bad, bad. I will admit that I have not tried THIS particular app, but I had a bad experience nonetheless and wouldn't recommend dealing with this company.

This software (and related apps) is simply terrible - at least for the purposes of converting DVD movies for viewing on a blackberry curve. I've tried all manner of combinations (fps etc) for several movies - only one was watchable on the mobile device, and the output was blocky and poor. Most of the time the conversion didn't work at all, had audio sync problems etc etc. A waste of money even if they gave it away free!

I should have looked at the first review. Lenny is right: this company is terrible. I have been trying to get an access code for a program I purchase for a month. They give no telephone contact and the email correspondent is obviously both overwhelmed & confused. I would never purchase from this company again. They should be investigated.

I do not use programs like this--just wanted to have something to get books to my iphone--and needed advice. it was impossible to get.

Wish I had read these reviews before purchasing. Software is useless. Converted video is full of artifacts and does not handle high speed scenes. Don't waste your money on this one.

The worst company I have ever dealt with. They will not refund at all. The software and support are really bad.

The evaluation version of their video conversion tool was the only one to render high-quality .3g2 video files from my camera phone in .avi or .mpg format. The Aimersoft render did not have ghosting issues like every other conversion tool does (and Facebook does as well). I'm interested in this software to take .3g2 videos from my camera phone and save them on my hard drive/Facebook. Is there something I don't get?

Agree, very bad company to work with - got a 'we're on holidays' message when I needed urgent tech support for a deadline. Found free software elsewhere that worked beutifully. Now the company will not refund, very disappointed in this company. Bad software, bad customer support.

Caveat Emptor. Like several people above I found that this software would not work on my system and customer support simply gives you run around to avoid making refund. Waste of money. Don't go there. (Alternative soft ware worked just fine )

I have just bought Ver 2.4.1. So far it works a dream, and I would rate it highly.

I was put off my all the negative comments above about ordering and unlocking, but brought it through RegNow (as per aimersoft website) and downloded then current version immediately. The Unlock codes were emailled within 2 hours, as promised on the order confirmation email.

Ver 2.4.1 is easy to use and the interface look is clean. Tried a coiuple other brands on trial and came back to Airmersoft to purchase.

Lots of twekking options: One TV episode I experimented with as MP4: Ripped as iPod was about 717Mb, as HD about 3.8Gb and a Distribution Video about 676Mb.

I just bought version 2.4.1 as well for the single purpose of ripping my dvd's to play on my PS3 over my wireless network. The DVD to PS3 function pegs out my CPU at 100% and the conversion took about 12 hours for Ninja Assassin only to find out that neither of the split MP4 files it spit out would play on the dang PS3.

I just placed a ticket on their support site. We'll see what they say. My CPU is about 4 times the recommended speed.

On a positive note, I've used it to rip all of my daughter's movies to PSP format and it worked beautifully. Maybe I should take the $35 out of her allowance. lol

The Aimersoft DVD Ripper is simple awful. I don't even want to waste more time on this software by giving a longer review. Bleh!

this company is HORRIBLE to deal with...they will not, under any circumstances issue a refund...I've been trying since March to get a refund. When I asked for a customer service phone number, they replied via email that they do not have a phone number! The product does not work and they won't admit to it. Now I can't even get it uninstalled/reinstalled and having to send them screenshots to PROVE that I can't get it to even reinstall again to test it. They require you to test it....I've never dealt with a company with such poor customer service...ever. If you're looking for a great product and company to deal with, go with Xiliosoft. They rock!

I just purchased in a few days ago - and I have mixed feelings about it. The purchase process went off without a hitch, but the results are not that great. I have converted 4 DVD's, and of the 4 only one converted without problems. Don't get me wrong - they all converted, but came up with this terribly distracting 'stop-motion' effect - as if the frames-per-second were to low. I'm having buyers remorse at the moment. I'll try it again tomorrow, but I won't hold my breath. I bought because I simply could not bring myself to participate in DVDFab scam! Why in the hell would purchase a product that is overpriced to begin with, and that will require me to "renew" the license 1 or 2 years later???? Ridiculous!!!! I will just keep looking for a better product! One that has a reasonable ONE TIME price and doesn't produce crappy results like this one!!!
