DOWNLOAD PROGRAM    REQUEST A REVIEW

More of the good stuff

I’ve come to realize that torrents are the recent craze nowadays. Well, they’ve been a craze for a while, I’m not a complete noob. I’ve also realized that using the default bittorrent downloader can be a bit clunky when you have more than 3 torrent going at once.

As one of the leading torrent clients out there, Azureus brings together functionality, multi-tasking and definitely fast download speeds. I want to see if it really is the best bittorrent client out there.

Inside the belly of the beast

After installing Azureus, I purposely left my taskbar manager open to see how much of a resource hog Azureus actually is. Since it’s based on a java platform, I wanted to see if it did in fact use more and more of my system’s resources.

On startup, I was asked what sort of user I was (beginner, intermediate or advanced) and chose to go with the advanced user so I can have the most options at my disposal. I then chose my connection speed and specified my open ports and was on my way (I did have to disable my firewall since it had detected it was blocking an essential port). I had to specify a default folder while enabling resume capabilities.

The layout of Azureus can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. It’s a dual pane GUI with different tabs for different features. The most basic one is the ‘My Torrents’ tab, which includes the basics like, the rating of your files, a status of your files (how good of a connection you have), the name of the file being downloaded.

You also get more in depth information like how many seeders and peers you’re connected to, your download speed, ETA and a few more options, but you don't have the ability to fully control what you get from your download.

The cool part about Azureus is that it creates new tabs for appropriate functions. Instead of bringing you lots of unsorted and clustered windows, you receive a nicely organized tab list. From there you can go back and forth between information windows.

Your second major tab that gets created if you choose so is your ‘Statistics’ tab. Here you can view activities, transfers, your cache, and the distributed database. The last mini-tab is the ‘Vivaldi’ tab, which is part of Azureus’ DHT (Distributed Hash Tables). Vivaldi is a virtual positioning system that computes a position for every peer in the system.

I liked this tab’s functionality because you can actually take a comparative view of what your torrents are doing at any given time.

Azureus lets you track and specify maximum upload and download speeds like many other clients. Azureus also gives users the option of opening files from within a torrent that hasn’t fully finished downloading yet. Azureus' functions can be heftily increased with the use of plugins.

When it comes to download speed, Azureus can be your best friend, this latest release still holds that to be true. But, because it is an overall system drain the longer you leave it running, it leaves a little more to be desired.
On startup I noticed that the memory usage was around 10Mb; after about a half hour I was up to 55Mb of usage. For a lot of users who don’t have a great system to begin with, this fact might enlighten the disillusioned. Yes, it is a great torrent client, yes you do get great speeds, but the bottom line is that you’re going to get significant system draining the longer you leave it running.

The Good

It currently supports Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Unix. Azureus has resume capabilities, it’s packed with goodies and support. You can log onto an IRC help channel if you ever need the help. Has tracking capabilities and a lot of configurable settings. It has nearly everything you want from a torrent client. Tons of supported languages and a whole lof of added features. Check them out.

The Bad

I had some trouble since I didn’t have the latest java release. Without it, Azureus seems to start up and runs in the background, you get no window pane to work with, but instead you get a silent program tolling your system. It will slowly but surely take over your RAM usage, so beware.

The Truth

As one of the best torrent clients and one of the most popularly used, it’s pretty hard to say that this is not a great product, because it is. But remember, for those who don’t have as much RAM, this will become a system hog. You should take this into consideration for the typical size of torrents you usually download. If they tend to be longer, you’re going to get a larger system toll. If you really don’t care, then this program will be your best friend. This latest version has a lot of updates, bug fixes and some changes. Check out the full list right here.

azureus is getting worse and worse with each release. the newer beta vuze is s**. you cant even close it out of the system tray. on top of that the so called GPL product is now adware? isnt GPL purpose to get away from commercial wear not make money off it?

i think any open source product that has optional software with it, should be stripped of their GPL license.

Everything about Azureus is very good. Well, was, until this "Vuze" thing come along and screw up everything. I even thinking about changing my favorite torrent client for something else than "Vuze".

far better then uTorrent is now. uTorrent is now monitored software by BitTorrent. i like the some of the new add-ons for vuze such as their auto updater which allows you to automatically install the newer betas and ono which can help increase Vuze's speed. plus you have upload shaper, and the network monitor all must have new add-ons.

Resources, resources, and resources. Vuze seems like cannot stop extending the memory usage on how to make it look better. It might be good for multimedia purpose but what we need is a bittorrent client!!
God damn Vuze is simply a bloated ADWARE in Azurues.
Why bother using updating Vuze platform when everyone is changing Azureus into classical UI.

double thumb down~

Azureus is such a resource hog. Looking thru the reviews this seems to be the common complaint.. Yep I read how to properly configure it,& my system isn't ancient or outdated. The fact remains that its a MAJOR RESOURCE HOG. Its nothing personal As far as using the application It does an OK job. I gotta say I love the "swarm" graphic. Vuse though,,,its the reason Azureus has got to go. For me.

I find Azureus to be very good and all, but ive come across one problem:

It would seem that i can only download 2 at a time. Is this just common for Azureus, or is something wrong?

generic retarded objection
"azu is a resource hog"

Sounds like someone didn't bother READING how to properly configure the application for his system.

Additionally expecting NEW software on OLD hardware to function as well as NEW software on NEW hardware is patently irrational. Upgrade your hardware or continue using OLD software.

Azu consumes no more than 70 megs on my system. Compare that to the baseline of 85 megs consumed by firefox.

Plus I don't have to tolerate crap clients or barely-sharing peers with azu. microTorrent only has IPA banning.

Azu, even Vuze, is delightful when properly CONFIGURED.

i like azureus i really do but it slows down your pc and is rather bulky. there r good alternatives to it that are also open source like halite. i was actually guided to halite from 1 of lead members of peerguardian. pretty good recommendation.

things i love about azureus are the blocklist importer as well as that new network monitor that watches your isp.

things i dont like are the fact its bulky and runs on java. they also need to clean up their extension list and remove the vuse from it.

sad is azureus has gotten worse not better minus a couple additions. even the magnalinks seem to be more problamatic than before. ive also heard azureus is the most watched non bittorrent client out there ((ala bit torrent and utorrent)). which is never a plus.

Only one problem I have with this version of Azureus is the same one I've had with the older versions as well: the priority systems for downlaoding files SUCKS!!!! Everything else is smooth and seamless. There's information abounding, and one can do almost anything with azureus EXCEPT set priorities with any meaningful results. The program's great, just don't expect it to get the files you want in the order you want them in unless you have time to micromanage it like some small retarded child.

It is awsome with good content, and real HD. It has super fast download speeds, which work good on my crappy computer. But for the life of me i cannot figure out how to transfer my downloaded music videos and trailers to my Zune or ipod.

VERSION REVIEWED: Azureus v.3.0.4.2

This is one of the lowest torrent client I’ve ever tested. It eats a lot of resources without any justification and you can definitely notice when this app is running. YOU CANNOT COMPARE IT WITH Utorrent or even with Bitcomet.
It does have a lot of useless options and graphics (for inexperienced users ).. I’ll give him that…but when u draw the line u get a buggy application (that requires JAVA ) who eats a lot of resources and does same job as any other “lite” torrent client.

I could try to argument a little more my rating..but it would be simply a waste of my time.

azureus might be good but its made with java and so its resource hog , there are other torrent programs what take very few resources and if you but FORCE DOWNLOAD,port 1000 to 1005 , disk usage high and download SPEED high then other torrent programs give also SUPERFAST downloads without useing full computer resources like azureus does, but you can keep useing azureus if you dont like to change the settings evry time you download a new torrent , wont recomend for pple with slow computer,so I give 4stars

I would like to give this a 5/5, but this Zudeo stuff...not sure about it.

Azureus 3.0 = Azureus 2.5 + new installer + Zudeo.

If you look at the installed files, the core of the program is really no different from Azureus 2.5. So if you have Azureus 2.5, I dont think you need to upgrade.

This version just includes a new installer, which is very nice, and Zudeo. Zudeo is kind of like Democracy Player, for those who have used it. It is a system to delivery music videos, movie trailers and youtube type original content to your desktop. The difference between Zudeo and Youtube is that part of the download comes from people hosting the video. Azureus added a bit of bittorrent to video content. Obviously, Azureus isn't stupid and they knew that they had to at least provide a backbone for the content. The videos are tracked by Azureus, and the majority of the (very high) speed comes from Azureus. The videos are commented "provided by GetAzureus.com".

The positive of this Zudeo system is that the downloads are fast. And they have the potential to be very fast since you can somewhat think of it as Youtube + BitTorrent.
The negative of it is that the system really isnt friendly. Yeah the interface is great, and the library window showing what you have is awesome. But there is no built-in media player from what I can see. Everything plays externally, and nothing plays while downloading, something which is a cornerstone of YouTube.

You can rate videos, you can tag videos, you can download videos, and the preview screenshots are actually big and of excellent quality (compare against YouTubes crap mini-screenshots). I just think its kind of useless. People arent going to use a bittorrent program for this kind of stuff...that is what youtube for.

The thing with this is that, yeah Azureus is hosting the content, but the hope that bittorrent will improve speeds even more is predicated on the idea that people will be inclined to host these dumb videos on their machine. Yeah, in some cases, with copyrighted video you want the video on your machine. Some people are kicking themselves after YouTube probably deleted their favorite copyrighted videos and there is nothing to do about it. However, should Zudeo delete a video you have downloaded, well, there is nothing stopping you from keeping it. Good idea indeed, but I am just not a big fan of sitting around looking for videos to watch.

Oh the other major difference between youtube and Azureus Zudeo is that Zudeo might be blocked on your network, should you be on a school network or something. YouTube just uses the HTTP protocol while Zudeo is using the BitTorrent protocol. Think about that for a moment.

I hope they release an Azureus 3.0 without the Zudeo stuff. I just dont need it. I dont notice any increased slow-down from the addition of Zudeo but I just dont like the idea of it being on top of the BitTorrent part of the program.
It does use more resources than Azureus 2.5, by the way.

Best bit torrent client I have found. Really much controll over the sharing. Only problem is that it is a bit heavy on the resources.
