Having Privacy Issues?

As most of you are aware by now, when you delete a file, you don't really delete the file. It sits there until it gets overwritten by another file (which in some cases doesn't happen for a while). So programs or people who gain access to your computer do in fact have the capabilities to recover what you thought was long gone.

For most, this can include sensitive credit card information, personal addresses, or maybe something personally written. Whatever it may be, there's a chance it can be recovered. If you want to no longer worry about this any more, you will have to give East-Tec Eraser a serious looking over. This program will be a lifesaver for users who want to permanently delete any type of sensitive data.

Worry Not

I was really surprised by the effectiveness of East-Tec Eraser. It not only erases the files, it truly wipes the contents beyond recovery. It has a full featured set of privacy utilities that work effectively and quickly.

Let's start off with what East-Tec Eraser offers; a privacy guard which erases sensitive data from your Windows and Internet activity, it lets you completely eliminate your e-mail (supports numerous e-mail clients like Outlook, Eudora, Pegasus, Incredimail and more), it has a media wiper to delete data from disks, it has a scheduler, and even allows you to erase deleted data from your drives.

There aren't enough words to describe this product's abilities, it's truly remarkable. When using the Privacy Guard, it lays everything out for you. It tells you exactly what it will do before it proceeds. The Privacy Guard has six major components: Windows, Browsers, Applications, Peer2Peer, News and Email Readers, and a Custom option.

I thought the Peer2Peer option to eliminate any traces of data from P2P applications was one of the key features most power users would appreciate using. Another tool for power users would have to be that you can even design your own cleaning plug-in for East-Tec Eraser.

I've had a little time to nitpick the product and I have to say that this is one of the few programs that lets you scramble the file names & properties (this is configurable). It even erases the extra 'slack' space. When I was running a clean of my C: Drive, I was averaging about 25KB/Second when deleting files. Basically this meant I erased 300Mb of space in eleven minutes and deleted more than 15,000 files (high security).

You can not only delete files, but you can also tell East-Tec Eraser exactly how to do it. You're able to define wiping parameters. You're provided a slider to assign the level of system resources to commit to the wiping operation.

The best thing about this program is that it lets you set different parameters of how exactly you want to delete your files. By setting your security level/wipe method (12 choices plus one you can set yourself), you're able to full control how much of your information remains or gets permanently deleted. These choices include different ways of wiping as well (Russian GOST P50739-95, German VSItR, U.S. NAVSO P-5239-26, B. Schneier's algorithm, and a few more).

Every level of erasure comes with a detailed security summary telling you how many passes and what this option will do. It includes three criteria and an assigned Security level (low, medium and high). The three criteria are as follows: if it stops the software recovery tools, if it stops the recovery via hardware tools and if it works with compressed drives.

The Good

East-Tec Eraser is the best of its kind. It's got a great interface (plus a wizard for the less experienced users), drag-and-drop capabilities and several wiping algorithms. It has one of the best shredders I've tested and it has speed. This is a great product hands down. East-Tec Eraser supports lots of applications, so you know that it goes through and clears each one thoroughly.

The Bad The bad thing? I honestly don't know. Maybe its price, but for what you get out of it, it's pretty reasonable.

The Truth

This is just a pretty program all around. It has a clear focus and scope and doesn't complicate things for its users. It lets you choose different types of erasures, it even details everything it does. It's speedy and thorough. I would have to recommend this program for anyone who cherishes their privacy.
