Image processors are a dime a dozen these days. It’s the type of software you don’t waste too much time finding the one that fits your needs. There are some applications that have already been established as top dogs in this field and whose standards are pretty hard to beat, such as IrfanView, which is portable, multi-directional in options and features and carries out the jobs fast.

However, its polyvalence and some configuration areas are not exactly user-friendly for beginners. Simpler solutions for batch picture processing that do not encompass editing functions are more comfortable for this sort of users.

Easy Image Modifier is a freebie that provides the essential functionality of an image processor and a little something on the side. The app does not require installation and it does not save any of the settings you make for each photo processing session, which makes it 100% portable, so you can use it off a USB drive with no problems.

The simple interface does not come with any bells and whistles and skips straight to the important stuff: the options for processing the data. Adding the set of images can be done through a simple drag and drop action, regardless if the target is a folder or a multiple file selection. Just drop them in the interface and the app will automatically show you the amount of items sentenced to processing.

The app puts at your disposal picture resizing options; it lets you batch rotate or flip horizontally/vertically the elements added (rotate by 90 degrees to the left or by 180 degrees). Adjusting the size of the images can be done either by typing in the values yourself or by setting a percentage of the original element.

Easy Image Modifier can convert your image to a different format, as long as this is PNG, JPG or BMP. The list of file types supported is larger, though, and also includes TGA, GIF and TIF. Further settings for the output result allow renaming and selecting a destination of your choice. For these you can choose a predefined option, such as including image specific elements in the name of the output file, or define the storage path according to specifics of the original file.

Besides the set of functions present in the main application window Easy Image Modifier also comes with some additional configuration options that affect resizing. Thus, the program can be instructed to maintain aspect ratio so that the elements in the image are proportional. There are also JPG specific choices that let you remove meta information added by the camera that was used to take the photo or set the quality level of the resulting file.

Configuring the application to comply with your needs is an easy task. It permits you to resize, convert, rename and rotate the images in an effortless way. During our tests we put it against a folder filled with 300+ 3072x2304 JPG pictures. We simply dropped it in the application and set it to convert them to 640x480 PNGs and also change the names. The task was completed in a little over four minutes (4’06’’) and system resources involved were within acceptable parameters. CPU never went past 50% while RAM usage was negligible at less than 28MB.

Processing can be aborted at any moment, and in case of errors the app shows a report displaying the sort of trouble it encountered. However, we noticed that lack of storage space will not trigger any alert and the program will continue to function as if there is no issue. Only at the end of the processing will it show the list of items that generated errors.

Lack of free space to save the processed batch was labeled with errorcode 6, which, according to the error code legend of the application is “An unknown error occurred while saving possibly because of an incorrect modification”. Bottom line is that the root of the problem is not detected right away and the app will continue to try to store processed items in the defined location with no success, without giving you a heads up about the matter.

Easy Image Modifier manages to surprise through its simplicity in configuration and simplicity of options which cover the essential needs when it comes to batch processing. It moves pretty fast during the conversion process and the uncomplicated interface works to its advantage.

The Good

Batch processing settings do not require too much of your time. You can check all the options available in the interface directly from the main application window. Processing is done fast and with little impact on system resources.

Drag and drop support (applies to both files and folders) ensure an easy way to load images into the application.

The Bad

Lack of free space to store the output files during batch processing is not reported to the user and the operation continues as if everything runs fine (all errors are presented after the operation completes).

The Truth

Simplicity is the main feature of Easy Image Modifier. The program does its job as it is supposed to without making the user go through complicated settings. It is free, portable and has a light footprint on the system while processing the images.
