Text Editing Reached A New Level

Simple operations require simple tools - sometimes your hands are enough. Of course that with all this technological revolution we're living in, not even the easiest tasks could escape automatization or improvement.

One of these tasks that I'm talking about is text editing. Usually, your hands, a keyboard and the default text editor should be enough. To make it easier, more and more text editors appeared on the market, offering features like macros, syntax highlighting, unicode support or powerful tab features.

While installing the program you will be able to add a tray icon, associate EmEditor with text files, use it to view source for the pages found in Internet Explorer and add it to the Internet Explorer HTML editor list. Next, you can specify which directory to use for installing the program, and then all goes without any problem to the end.

The program's interface is classic for a text editor, with a menu bar, a toolbar and a text area. I have to say that all the icons from the toolbar are extremely well done and make the interface more pleasant to use.

Now let's see what we can get from EmEditor...

Text editing is what every text editor offers to its users, but the problem gets down to ergonomics and features. For example, you can waste time and get annoyed using a bad text editor (or just a good one that doesn't suit your needs...) or work at full speed with the tool you need.

One of the handiest features that I found in EmEditor is its ability to open files in individual tabs. This may prove extremely useful when you need to move text from one file to another, for example.

Searching and replacing text in the files from a certain directory is another task that's very good to have at hand. Examples? Let's say you have to change one price in 200 product lists, how's that? Is this a great time saver or what?

Another time saver that many people use with great success is the macro. Unfortunately I don't use macros, so all I can say is that, from a beginner's point of view, this feature looks awesome (you can even import Java Script and VB Script macros!).

There are over 20 built in colored-text configurations for EmEditor. You can highlight your text according to HTML, C, Pascal, XML and many more standards.

The interface of the program is very flexible and the toolbars can be easily customized, moved or hidden. EmEditor can use additional plugins or can launch external applications (of course you can use command line arguments when needed).

One last thing, for people who forget stuff (just like me, because this should have been mentioned earlier...), EmEditor gives the ability to use Bookmars inside the open files. For programmers handling large files, this could be a real life saver!

This is it for now, but I am sure you will discover a lot of interesting things in EmEditor on your own. All I can do now is to wish you fast fingers and happy typing!

The Good

EmEditor is fast, offers unicode support, tabbed editing interface, powerful and functionally-rich macros, syntax highlighting, handles large files well and has many other features. Its Help file is well done and covers also the Standard version of this program.

The Bad

The only bad thing with EmEditor is its price, from what I've been able to see so far. I was expecting for it to crash at least once, since this is not a stable version yet, but it didn't... and I can't say that this is bad, but be aware that it may happen.

The Truth

This program could be a worthy competitor to Ultra Edit if it would be slightly lower priced. EmEditor can be tested for free, so go ahead, download it and check it out.

From now on, this is a personal problem: you, your needs, and EmEditor. Good luck!
