Logon Screen Rotator is a simple application built specifically to help users change the original screen loaded by Windows when booting up.

This image is also displayed when locking the computer, so you don’t get to see it only when rebooting the system.

The application is free of charge and it does not require too much effort from the user to get it on the system. The installation process is straightforward and does not try to push third-party software.

During the procedure, you are given the possibility to place a shortcut for the program on the desktop. Although this is very useful with most of the programs, in the case of Logon Screen Rotator, there are few reasons for a shortcut once you configure the application.

At the first launch, you are asked to provide some image folders the program can use for changing the logon background. This operation is not mandatory and you can add as many image folders at any time.

Looks are plain and simple. The main application window has a set of four tabs for tweaking various aspects of the application.

Logon Screen Rotator does not come with its own wallpapers for the logon screen and relies instead on what is already provided in the operating system, using the resources from “C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper.” This is Windows’ repository for the wallpapers it can apply on the desktop.

The first tab in the main application window displays the current image for the logon background. This can be changed to a random picture from the ones already available or to a specific one.

The preview is shown on the spot. To check how the pic really looks, there is the possibility to lock the workstation.

During our tests, changing the image randomly led to showing a black square at one point. This was not applied to the logon screen, but the image would never change either. Repeating the procedure after restarting the app led to the same result.

A tip at the bottom of the interface informed that Loon Screen Rotator was unable to change the image because of invalid file handles. The only solution to fix this glitch is to restart the program.

Another tab in the interface allows you to add individual images that can be used as a background image. The area is empty but right clicking reveals the options available, which include activating the selection, removing it from the list or viewing it (loads in the default image viewer).

On the downside, there is no support for multiple selection, which means that if you want to remove several specific images, you’ll have to do it individually. On the other hand, there is the possibility to remove all of them at once.

A quicker and more comfortable way to make sure that it’ll take a long time to run out of background images is to provide folders filled with pictures. Removing an entry is exactly the same as in the case of single images: one at a time or all of them at once.

Logon Screen Rotator’s configuration panel is just as minimalist as the interface. The list of options, although short, includes handy settings.

The choices include the possibility to define a specific frequency for changing the background picture: at each log on, once a day, every time the computer is locked or at every computer lock and log on. Alternatively, you can manually change the photo at your convenience.

Additional options available allow selecting how the pic should be displayed: center or stretched. You may not notice any difference at the beginning, but after restarting the system, the change should take effect.

The application can search recursively for images in a folder, which means that it also takes a look in subfolders and loads the resources available.

Should you need to revert all the changes to the original configuration, Logon Screen Rotator can do it with a single click.

It may take a while in some cases and during our tests the application even froze for a few seconds, but the wait was not in vain because the default image file was restored.

Logon Screen Rotator doesn’t require any special skills to work with because all the options are simple to use.

The Good

It is free of charge and does not try to push third-party software during the installation procedure.

You can set the frequency for automatic changing of the logon background and enable recursive search in the image folders; it allows you to revert all the modifications to the default configuration of the system.

The Bad

At one point during our testing, the application refused to change the image from the control in the main screen; it only showed a black square.

Sometimes it froze on us when trying to return to the initial logon image.

The Truth

Logon Screen Rotator is not the perfect utility for changing the background image for the logon, lock and shutdown screen of the system, but it does a pretty good job. There are options for selecting the triggers for the automatic rotation.
