Registry entries play an important role in the health of your PC. Windows Registry is practically the heart of Windows. All the preferences of the PC, user accounts, file associations, installed software and all the changes of the system are stored in here.

These being said, you realize that the Registry Editor is a dangerous application to mess with if you do not really know what you are doing. One wrong editing and your favorite programs may no longer work. Even the OS and Windows settings may suffer some changes that may result in future malfunctions.

On the other hand, the system registry has to be cleaned from time to time, depending on the number of softwares you are installing and uninstalling or the settings you make to your computer. As manual editing is not for each and everyone of us and as it also takes a lot of time, software developers thought about creating the necessary tools to get rid of those obsolete files in the registry. These are the files left behind due to incomplete software uninstalling.

There is a myriad of applications especially designed to carry out this task, but few of them are really good and reliable. My favorite is Easy Cleaner as it is free and during our testing it proved to be an extremely reliable tool. Of course, there are other tools out there just as reliable as this one.

Registry Washer for instance is a pretty good application that novices can use without problems. The application is developed by Right Utilities Inc and they offer users an evaluation period of 15 days. The price of the software is the regular $29.95.

The clear-cut interface of the Washer offers an overall view of all the available options in just a few clicks. The Settings menu includes a scheduling feature that allows the users to program the application to do its registry scanning on certain days at user specified time. You can also select the areas of the registry to scan and the actions to take after the registry check is complete (fix the errors or just scan).

There are 17 areas available to scan, among which there are Registry Integrity, Software Locations, Shared Programs, Device Drivers, Startup Programs, Add/Remove Programs, Configuration Files, Invalid Path Files, System Settings Errors or Windows Services. A complete scan would include all the options and it will also take the longest time to complete.

If you do not know what the sections comprise, do not despair and do not search for them on the Internet, as the program gives you all the necessary information. It is enough to select one of the sections, as the info box below will display an explanation of the respective section. For the most comprehensive check, the software can offer "check all the sections at once" by using the Select All option at the bottom of the Scan window, on the left.

A useful option available in Registry Washer menu is Restore Backups. This feature allows the user to return to the previous state of the registry after the errors have been fixed. It is the undo function of the application. Thus, if after fixing the errors there are erroneous runs of certain applications or the system itself you can undo the changes and restore all the settings.

Registry Tools will provide you with the necessary tool to manage your startup programs. You can add, remove, enable or disable the applications that are starting with Windows. You should take a look in here as there may be some obsolete items. I found three items that had nothing to do in the Startup and yet, there they were.

The registry search tool is a handy instrument to search the windows Registry for any phrase, name or file name. The options presented allow you to choose the section to search in, and the search options include data, file name, keys, values or matching whole word only. One piece of advice though: the keys selected to delete in the search results will be permanently deleted, so be careful with this.

The Good

The Exclude List option is quite useful, as it allows you to select the drives, files, folders or registry paths you want to be skipped during the scan. Also, the restore function included in the application is very good as the software is not always 100% accurate and may include false positives.

The Bad

The price can pass as a baddie, but only to say something in this section of the review.

The Truth

You can test the application as often as you want during the 15 days trial period as the application has no other limitation and all the features are fully working.

Here are some snapshots of the application in action:
