Been on a vacation and took a lot of pictures? Big sized ones? Have a nice movie from your birthday party? Want to share them online in a secure way and don't know how? Well, FTP might be the answer for you. For this you will need a FTP client of course. A smart one. You need SmartFTP - a high class ftp client for Windows operating systems that lets you do everything about file transfer (over the Internet and intranets alike), developed by SmartFTP GmbH.

Just in case you’re wondering, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over TCP/IP networks. It works as simple as this: two computers connect using FTP software (server and client), making possible the file transfer. You will also need a FTP account, ask one from your internet provider or use your own if you already have one.

SmartFTP has a modern GUI (Graphical User Interface), Windows XP-like and, above all its abilities, it can initiate secure connections (TLS/SSL), allowing you to securely connect to your accounts.

The interface is very simple to use. Just connect to your account, in the left side of the window the server panel appears, while the right side displays your drives. You can even drag and drop from left to right the files you need or do the reverse if you want to upload something. The bottom area has a tabbed panel with your connections, the speed and transfer queue dialogs.

About the file permission, I can say that is well implemented, the CHMOD feature enabling you to set all the rights for good security management
(read, execute, write). SmartFTP also has a handy Statistic Popup little screen that's useful whenever you want to see the speed and the total amount of your traffic.

SmartFTP includes support for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and File eXchange Protocol (FXP), can also manage multiple connections from different servers and has advanced NAT/UPnP support (Universal Plug and Play).

SmartFTP client has a connection dialog configured to interact with TLS/SSL (Transport Layer Security/Secure Socket Layer) encryption parameters, allowing you to make secure connections over SSL (Explicit or Implicit).

The good

As FTP clients are widely used over the net, I must say that a very good and useful part of SmartFTP is the localization in 15 languages. The program is also free for personal and educational use, so it's a must have.

The bad

The bad? Hmm, I don't know. Here I should say that the FTP protocol has some security limitations (the data is in clear text, there's no specific method for encrypted data transfer). Fortunately, SmartFTP has FTP over SSL support.

The truth

SmartFTP is a FTP client that will satisfy both the beginner and the advanced user; it's intuitive and simple to use with a very well organized and friendly interface, with all the features someone can expect from this kind of software.

Bye, Bye SmartFTP not free version any more
Which is real sad to say I used it for min years I think date back to 1998 when it wasn't even ver 1.0 where I switch from WS_FTP v6 to SmartFTP becuase I like it better to bad it not free version any more.
What I don't like in v3 is that dran the Transfer Queue Thing which v2.5 did not do and no mb some of the other ftp client I look at don't have this kind of junk so for now I end up going back my old register ver WS_FTP v6 and manuel had re-enter-in all my ftp site a pain but I'm just about got it done in tell I have time to do full comparison of other Free FTP client.
SmartFTP still has problem download big which alway restart Transfer Queue even know it down the file but always ends up restart to 0 download the same file over and over.

For the long time LeechFTP user upset with the final state of the program (the few bugs every so often, and the failure of LeechFTP to disconnect completed downloads/uploads properly, and the log also saying that files that have been downloaded are corrupt) look no furhter. SmartFTP to the rescue.

Well not really...but its the best client out there for the LeechFTP faithful desiring to have a new client.

Sure theres bitbeamer, but bitbeamer is already dead for someodd reason. And you cant buy it anymore from what i see... sure you can crack it, but i never liked the program to begin with. Hell, you even need to download this small exe file to fix the uninstall in bitbeamer. By default, bit beamer comes with an uninstall.log, but no exe to uninstall, let alone no entry in add/remove programs. Just search google for BitBeamer uninstall fix. I downloaded it off some Japanese site or something.

Anyway, back to SmartFTP.
It says Trial...and buy...but you dont HAVE to buy it...lol...running it in trial mode (which seems to have no time bomb or such) removes no features.

There are only a few slight differences between LeechFTP and SmartFTP. Obviously the queue pane is not on the let like you would be used to...and sure the local browser and the remote browser have the tree view, but they arent hard to get used to.
But the best part of SmartFTP when compared to LeechFTP, and then compared to all the other FTP's out there, is the threads...LeechFTP was revolutionary in allowing more than one connection...SmartFTP implements this very well. So for all you thread junkies, look no further.

It has a great XP look and feel.
I would just wish they would implement more right click menus since they already implement Windows Explorer enough in the Local and Remote browsers (e.g. a right click window to allow you to choose which column headers to show...size, image size, duration, etc...the standard ones that come with windows exploere :)).

The options are great...there are a lot of them and its wonderful.

The program loads fast...and the interface, outside of the differences from LeechFTP) is great when compared to FTP clients like FlashFXP, CuteFTP, WSFTP, BitBeamer, DeluxeFTP, etc. etc. etc.

Its a great program, and its something that LeechFTP users should look into using...
Hell, they even have a forum set up for suggestions and support!...
