Don't underestimate spyware. Even though you can't see it, it can still be contaminating your computer. Adware, malware, Trojans, keyloggers, system monitors — they're all continually snooping and sniffing, seeking to sneak past your defenses and potentially destabilize your sensitive data.

Analysts estimate 60 percent of enterprise systems have unsolicited adware embedded on their computers. That's a problem. These self-installing applications can compromise the security of data and intellectual property, slow computer performance, and put an increased service burden on the IT staff. Webroot Software's Spy Sweeper is one of several anti-spyware products to hit the market with promises of system-wide decontamination.

The $30 program installs easily and launches with an initial setup during which it loads up a database of more than 68,000 known items of malice.

For the smallest of businesses, Spy Sweeper can be run on individual computers where it does a thorough and efficient job of rooting out the nasties. In our test run the application detected six pieces of adware as well as six cookies before giving us an opportunity to select which of these we wished to kill.

Spy Sweeper does receive high marks for ease of use. A simple scheduling function allows the user to configure automatic sweeps at set times. The application can also reach back to home base to automatically check for updates. A user setting can direct Spy Sweeper to automatically delete quarantined items after seven, 30, 60, or 90 days. Users can customize their sweeps to either include or exclude cookies, your system registry, memory, and so on. On a larger scale, mid-sized businesses can avail themselves of these same tools, along with a number of important features aimed at easing the administrative burden.

An administrative console enables system managers to configure clients, manage updates, establish alerts, view reports, and perform real-time scans of remote systems. An "Active Shield" function actively monitors in real time against spyware and adware installations.

For enterprise users, Spy Sweeper can run in three modes. It can be invisible, with no user interaction. It can deliver a pop-up alert window during a scan, or else it can display an animated tray icon to indicate activity without disrupting the user. Laptop settings protect
remote users even when they are not logged into the network.

Spy Sweeper stands in a crowded arena. Chief among competing products are the freeware/donationware clients Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware SE, as well as the commercialware Spyware Doctor from PC Tools and Spyware X-terminator clients. Both Spybot-S&D and Ad-Aware SE offer equally effective malware detection and removal capabilities, and in many cases deliver faster scans as well.

In addition to anti-spyware sweeps, Spyware Doctor also includes an integrated pop-up blocker. While there is no shortage of such blockers on the market, the integration here saves you from having to install a separate application. Spyware X-terminator meanwhile claims a high success rate, but offers a database of just 18,000 items, a figure that looks paltry compared to the 68,000+ in Spy Sweeper.

In fact, the extensive malware database may be Spy Sweeper's strongest feature. The pace of innovation among the creators of spyware seems to know no bounds, and an automated database update is therefore a crucial feature for any would-be blocker. In our last check, Webroot reported a range of nasties, including the adware program Clkoptimizer; the porn dialer Go In Dialer; Radmin, a remote access tool that can be used to control a computer remotely; and Realsearcher, a browser hijacker, just to name a few.

If Spy Sweeper has a downside, it is the incredibly long sweep time, but this can be offset somewhat by tweaking the tool's options. One can choose, for example, to sweep only those areas where threats are known to reside, rather than sweeping every last nook and cranny. It's possible, too, to skip one's largest files. The skips can speed things up while still allowing for a high degree of protection.

Spy Sweeper is a powerful, versatile, and easy to use application. It's hardly the only program in this particular market space, but it certainly is worth checking out. Aside from Spybot-S&D and Ad-Aware SE, most competing programs come in at a similar price point, so the comparison will be apples to apples in most cases.

Perhaps the most important lesson here is that small and mid-sized businesses absolutely have to take seriously the threat posed by spyware and other related intruders. Browser hijackers? Remote access control? This is serious stuff, and a $30 fix is surely worth the cost and effort.

The Good

Smooth, efficient, and thorough in its efforts to flush the baddies; inexpensive (and free evaluation).

The Bad

A full sweep can be time-intensive, often taking 10 minutes of more, freeware/donationware alternatives like Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware SE offer equally effective malware detection/removal capabilities.

The Truth

The unique technology completely disables spyware programs detected on a system PC, rendering them ineffective. Using CRT, Spy Sweeper Enterprise assures system stability during and after the spyware removal process.

Yes it's a great update but you'll notice something.

If you're using 5.8.1.47 if you do a check for the latest version they've gone back to the preceding one. It seems that the 5.8.1.47 is broken and I've experienced the problems first hand.

After 5 to 10 minutes of use windows just locks up..

Submitted the report but I can't even get to Taskmanager to kill it... System runs smooth as silk with spysweeper shutdown but put it on and it's lockup hell all over again...

Downgrading now as a result.

Curious that they've not said anything though, just set the "latest version" back a level...

I have never had any problems downloading previous versions of Spy Sweeper, but this time, I had problems. After installing, it told me to restart the computer. I restarted, and then I saw the blue screen of death (a stop error). Then I rebooted the computer again, and a black screen of death appeared. I chose "Last Known Good Configuration", and a Spy Sweeper window popped up and told me there was a problem with its installation. So, I restarted again, went into Safe Mode, and tried re-installing it from there, but I got the blue/black screens of death all over again. I ended up uninstalling Spy Sweeper.

I really dont see much of a difference from version 4.5. The interface is still pretty much the same Spy Sweeper unique interface, with rounded edges on the window, and the unique way of showing the close/minimize/maximize buttons. The features are the same.

I think the major difference is that the scan times and scan resources have been significantly decreased, but thats not to say the scanning is free sailing. Its still slower than other programs and more resource hungry as well.

The really big bummer about this program is that its not free, $30, and the trial, like v4.5 trial, doesnt remove anything...it shows what it finds and asks you to pay to remove the crap.

It still as slow as ever...loading and stuff...so major improvements here.

I really dont like how this is still $30 for no real big improvements.
If you tell me that this is standard with software, well then let me bring your attention to Spyware Terminator. Version 1.5 of their software brought antivirus and HIPS protection, things that weren't in version 1.4.

I say stick with a bunch of freeware scanners before you decide to pay $30 for Spy Sweeper. It only survives on its name which became big during the days when the TRIAL LET YOU REMOVE CRAP!

Webroot is the SECOND best adware/spyware remover behind GIANT/Microsoft AntiSpyware. But paired TOGETHER with GIANT/Microsoft, it makes the best possible combination available...better than any combo containing Ad-Aware or SpyBot S&D.

The only problem with it is the scanning engine. The engine while great in detecting stuff, is TERRIBLE in terms of resources and time.

But, with this new beta (indicating the future of Spy Sweeper), the future looks bright. The scan uses a lot less resources and seems to be faster.
I just wish this software would have an accurate picture of how long the scan will take...thats one thing i never liked about this program. The first scan shows no time. Every subsequent scan shows a remaining time based off the first scan time. Since each scan environment is different from the next, the time varies. So the scan time, shown as a progress bar, shows 100% progress when in reality it will probably be somewhere like 50% done.
Since, as im writing this, im doing my first scan I cant comment on whether this has been fixed :P.

Another thing that has been improved, rather minorly I might note, though, is the interface. It is still the same BASE, but little things have been changed to give it a more XP feel, snice this same base interface has been the same since the version 2.X days...terrible I say. Its a step in the right direction, but Microsoft/GIANT Antispyware has such a big leap on this software in terms of interface its not funny.

Some new options have been added...cant go into specifics since Im scanning right now :P...there are also a couple new IE shields.

All in all, the 4.0 version seems to be a step in the right direction, thats if there was ever one for this excellent adware/spyware remover to begin with...

4/5 on the value since this softwre requires a purchased subscription, while Microsoft Antispyware is free and detects more than this software...

worst feature is loading when windows starts. it makes your computer slow down. it is a lot slower at scanning then adaware, but finds more items then adaware did.
