Toolwiz Time Freeze is a small-sized, powerful and free software utility that offers a simple security means for the computer. Similar to a sandboxing tool, it creates a safe environment for the operating system by saving its current settings and permitting users to revert changes to the default state.

This type of program has multiple purposes. For example, it can block other users from tinkering with software applications and system files, in order to prevent them from inadvertently causing PC stability issues. On the other hand, it can also act like a safety net for the computer's administrator, facilitating a virtual space for running unknown or suspicious programs which likely contain malware.

Time Freeze captures the current state of the operating system, and any modifications made to Windows are restored to that original state at every PC restart. Several settings can be tweaked so that the application can suit the user's preferences.

Installation and interface

Before proceeding with the fast setup procedure, it is possible to adjust the disk caching size used for the Time Freeze engine as well as to enable the app on the primary drive every time, and even when Windows is running in safe mode. The application may also be protected with a password to prevent other users from modifying its settings. A system reboot is necessary to finalize everything.

Once launched, Time Freeze creates an icon in the system tray area, thus allowing users to rapidly start and stop the program, as well as to bring up its configuration panel. It doesn't put too much emphasis on looks, though. Based on a single window with a classical look and a nearly organized structure, the utility lets users immediately handle the customization operation without worrying about aesthetics.

Easily configure settings

Time Freeze can be asked to automatically run at Windows startup until further notice, thus providing all-round protection against new file changes. An aspect worth mentioning is that it gives users the possibility to exclude any files and folders from the monitor, so that they will still be able to make modifications to their contents even when the monitor is running.

What's more, a Time Freeze toolbar can be shown on top of the desktop. As previously mentioned, the program can be password-protected to prevent others from enabling or disabling it, or changing its configuration. To further increase security, the application's icon may be hidden from the system tray area.

Time Freeze cannot be stopped right away, though. It requires a system reboot to do so.

The Good

The software application worked smoothly on Windows 8.1 Pro during our evaluation, without triggering the operating system to hang, crash or pop up error messages. It successfully discarded file changes and app installations after system reboot.

Since it runs like a service in the background, Time Freeze is non-intrusive, so it doesn't affect regular user activity on the computer.

The tool can be password-protected to prevent other users from enabling or disabling it, or tinkering with its settings. Any files and folders can be excluded from the monitor, so any changes made to them are actually committed to disk.

CPU and RAM consumption is minimal.

It is extremely simple to handle, even by first-time users.

The Bad

Even if a password is not set, Time Freeze prompts for one when attempting to bring up its configuration panel, so users might be confused about this (leave the fields blank to proceed).

Given its simplicity and straightforwardness, the tool does not include other advanced settings for experienced users, such as the ability to track down the exact changes which were discarded after system reboot, or to restrict access for other users by taking into account their PC user profiles.

The Truth

With all things considered, Time Freeze is a must-have application for any computer users, whether they frequently experiment with new programs on the PC or not. Thanks to the fact that it is so easy to install, run and control, Time Freeze can be started before any activity to make sure the computer will remain safe at all times.
