Version reviewed: WinMend Folder Hidden 1.2

WinMend Folder Hidden is a file / folder hiding tool. While ensuring the absolute system safety, this application can quickly hide files and folders on local partitions and/or on removable devices. The hidden files / folders will be safely hidden whether the drive is accessed in another operating system on the same computer or reinstalled on another computer.

What does it take to protect your files and folders? The Internet provides both complex methods as well as extremely simple ones to keep prying eyes away from your data. Some of the best solutions on the market lock the desired digital information in a vault, which encrypts the data with standard algorithms or just the simple password-based encryption.

There is nothing wrong with these, except for a single flaw: they are visible and because of the unusual extension, they draw attention. Once this shows up on the radar of a skilled hacker there is just a matter of time before s/he manages to crack the encryption.

Another approach would be hiding the files and folders you want to protect, and the main methods here are changing the file attribute or using WinMend Hidden Folder. This application does not involve encryption or any other safety measure save for hiding the data, and not by changing the attributes of the files/folders.

Hidden Folder from WinMend is a free ride to rendering any piece of information you hold on your computer absolutely invisible. It comes packed in a lightweight installer and avoids any complicated menu, keeping everything to the maximum minimum. It is also free of charge, and as soon as you put it to the test it'll prove that it does an awesome job.

Installation completes smoother than you would think and there are no bumps on the road to interrupt the process. Simply accept the license agreement, select the installation location and whether you want a shortcut link on the desktop or in the Quick Launch menu (or both). After all this it's smooth sailing. The entire procedure should not take more than a minute, with all the stops in the process. At the end of the installation you can launch the app or postpone its run for a later time. Either way, the same screen will be waiting.

But before getting access to the main application window you will have to set a master password that protects all the settings you make and grants permission only to authorized users. For security purposes the countersign needs to have between 6 and 15 characters (numbers and letters).

The interface is as simple as can be, with no frills, or bells and whistles, sheltering the meager number of four options, none of which require configuration (unless you consider setting up a password configuration setting). Although WinMend Folder Hidden has three tabs in the application window, only the first one (Hide Folder) is of immediate interest as there's all the setup you're going to need.

The stinting configuration settings make available the necessary options for populating the list with folders and files you want to become invisible, the option for reverting the process and making them visible again, as well as changing the master password. Another option available is changing the color of the interface. There are some lively colors available even if some of the users may find that the orange is too orange for their eyes as well as the red. But if you want to tone down the intensity, I suggest using one of the last two options out of the five available (green, red, orange, blue and black).

Handling WinMend Folder Hidden is child's play, regardless of your skill level. All you have to do is click the Hide Folder/Files buttons to browse to the data you want to make unseeable, select it and close the program. It is indeed that simple an operation. No other type of protection is needed as the information, once hidden, cannot be found except with WinMend Folder Hidden.

We threw the app into some pretty hard tests and went as far as changing the operating system (an action of which we were sure that would crack the hidden files visible) and yet there was no sign of them. So the easy tests such as trying the Safe Mode, switching the user or changing the file manager were bound to fail, and they all did.

The truth is that WinMend Folder Hidden is responsible with your data and offers great protection by simply concealing them from prying eyes. Only the presence of the application on the system can give away the fact that you have secrets. However, uninstalling the software will remove every trace of the privy data because this action does not reveal it and, even more, re-installing the program will allow you access to the hidden files with no problem. The same password will be maintained, so there's really nothing to worry about.

Uninstallation takes even less than putting WinMend Folder Hidden on the system and your info is safe and sound even after this procedure. There is one thing you have to remember at re-install: the original password, otherwise you won't be able to access the interface.

If at some point you are discontent with the password you originally set, the program gives you the possibility to change it. There are no security measures with this, though, and you won't be asked for confirmation of the old countersign to make the modification, only to type in the new one.

The Good

WinMend Folder Hidden is simple and to the point. It does its job very well, hiding the data completely, not only in Windows OS, but also in other operating systems.

It can hide both individual files and individual folders.

The Bad

Upon changing the password you are not asked for the previous one and this may increase the risk of someone taking over the command.

The Truth

So, WinMend Folder Hidden does a great job with hiding your data as it conceals it in other operating systems as well. In lack of abundant options and features the application is extremely easy to use.

Re-installing it requires the last set password, otherwise you won't be able to tap into the interface and remove the visibility restriction, thus eliminating the risk for just anyone to use it on your system.

WinMend Folder Hidden is an application that simply works, without any effort from the user.

Here are some snapshots of the application in action:

I've tried this product winmend folder hidden, I managed to install and hide a test file/folder and found out that the program creates a folder within the Recycler folder named com4; which under windows and dos read it as a communications port, and create subsequent folders named in numbers exceeding the file/folder name limit. Hence leaving you with the bad feeling of a viral attack through those folders.

I seem to recall a virus with the same method in keeping itself within a folder with long folder names so as not to be easily erasable and hidden.

Indeed, it does behave in the manner you describe, amanamen. But I can assure you that it is malware-free and perfectly safe to use, although its behavior may be picked up at least as suspicious if not spyware-like by different scanners.

I installed and hid one folder on non system partition and found out that the program created a folder within the Recycler folder named com4hidenfiles11111111… exceeding the file/folder name limit. It is hidden (rahs) and not erasable in common way. (I am not going to format partition).
After uninstall the program this item remains in Recycler folder and what worse it spreads out to all folders with recycler on next partitions including USB disc including flash MP3 player. Is any/some acceptable way (non disc format)how to remove – get rid of this items in recycler?
Many Thanks zd

WinMend is the worst software and is a mere eyewash..I have already found 2 easy ways to pass its security and am amazed at the fact that i happen to be the only one doing it..Its a real security flaw and i dont wish to disclose it here since it might transfer unto the unwanted..Though i can share it with the developers if needed..It is a real security flaw and believe me it doesnt even take 4 seconds to access the files without knowingthe password, leave alone using anpther OS.I hope they correct it soon.

The new version has fix the bugs that access to it without password. Now, I have to say it's really a wonderful file hide or file encryption software.

Sir,

I would be so glad if you could tell me how I can unhide the folders I've hidden with Winmend. I've written to them but yet to no avail. I can not get to important information as the program (now version 1.4) does not list my hidden folders anymore. I have changes to XP (from W7) hoping that would help but no way. Pls give me a hand.

Well, they surely have fixed the bug. But the files are still very easily accessible from other OS, which, according to WinMend, should not happen. Another method which easily byepasses this SWs protection is Google Desktop. Its indexing is way too powerful for WinMend folder hidden to check.

I tried the software and found it fascinating. It hides folders and files quite well and they cannot e seen from Windows or command line. I also tried the attrib command to see if it was as simple as that, but no evidence the file(s) or folder was there after hiding. I see no evidence mentioned above of files in the recycle bin after working with the program, but I have only tested it in a very small way.

I did see a rather strange situation in testing. Use the program to first hide a file inside a folder. Then delete the folder. Next, recreate the folder using the name name. When I did this I found the folder was back with the original hidden file in it; which seems impossible if I deleted it. The program saw the file and allowed it to be unhidden with the password. I am next testing on USB drives; it is a fun program and I will use it. Also, somewhere stated is that you cannot "hide" encrypted folders using other methods or programs and thus their methods make it easy for a good hacker may hack what he can see. Programs like TrueCrypt also allow you to hide volumes behind/inside another, for those times when you might be pressured under duress to type in a password on a volume.

It worked fine until I went to our office and tried to open it. The program will not open. It required an Administration password. The User Account Control is authorized to be accessed by the Administrator only. Is there some way to make it really portable?
