Thanks to the multitude of video processing tools available, users can easily create their own movies, rip clips from discs, convert media, and share files with others.

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is an approachable DVD ripper that enables users to convert DVD movies to common video formats, as well as prepare them for online publishing or playback on external devices. It is backed by customizable audio and video settings, and completes tasks in decent time.

NOTE: You can also read our previous review for WinX DVD Ripper Platinum 5.16.

The demo edition does not have an expiration date, but it can convert videos up to only 5 minutes. Unlocking this limitation costs $39.95 / €29.95 (temporarily discounted from $59.95 / €43.20), and this offer includes a free copy of WinX HD Video Converter.

The installation process is fast and uncomplicated, so users should not encounter any difficulties in the matter. The tool sports a user-friendly interface and intuitive options which simplify the whole video conversion job.

DVD movies can be loaded from folder, ISO image, mounted image or external disc. As previously mentioned, WinX supports a wide array of output profiles, ranging from general video (AVI, MP4, AVC, MPEG, WMV, MOV) and web video (YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo) to external devices (e.g. Apple, Android, Microsoft, Sony). It is also possible to perform a DVD backup by copying the main title content or full title, as well as by cloning the DVD to a folder or ISO image.

Supported output profiles, along with the movie previewDVD clips can be previewed in a small, built-in media player. Users may seek a position in the stream by moving a slider, pause playback, as well as capture frames and save them to PNG format. Meanwhile, video tags can be modified when it comes to the name, artist, genre and comments. If the DVD movie contains multiple titles, these can be merged into a single video after conversion.

As far as editing settings are concerned, it is possible to embed a subtitle into the video and specify its position and language, crop or expand the image, trim the video into smaller parts by marking the start end time, as well as adjust the volume level. These settings can be restored to default, as well as applied to all titles.

Crop and expand movies, as well as configure audio and video settingsAudio and video parameters can be configured for the output movies in terms of codec, frame rate, resolution, bit rate, aspect ratio, sample rate, and channel mode. These options can be also reset to their factory values. Unfortunately, WinX does not integrate a feature for creating and saving new output profiles with customized settings.

A high-quality engine can be used for conversion, while deinterlacing can be enabled to make the video clearer. The utility supports multiple threads, which means the number of CPU cores can be selected for conversion. If any technical issues occur during the encoding procedure, the task can be re-run in safe mode (slower than normal mode but stabler).

In matter of program configuration, it is possible to change the default audio language, output folder and snapshot directory, as well as ask WinX to automatically open the output location or turn off the computer when the task is completed.

During a conversion job, the app displays the current title, destination name, start and end time, elapsed and remaining time, along with frames per second. Just like in the program settings area previously described, users can set WinX to power off the computer or open the output directory on task completion.

Measuring performance

We put WinX DVD Ripper Platinum to the test on an Intel Core i5-3470 @ CPU 3.20GHz with 12GB RAM and TSSTcorp DVD-RW SH-216BB, on Windows 8.1 Pro.

Default settings were applied. CPU consumption was minimal but RAM usage spiked during tasks. The app delivered quality clips after conversion in all cases.

A DVD disc worth of 845MB and 16 minutes and 59 seconds was converted into an AVI clip in approximately 3 minutes and 41 seconds. We copied the main title content from the same DVD movie, a task which took roughly 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

Moreover, we copied the main title content from a 2.44GB DVD folder (1 hour, 34 minutes and 5 seconds) in approximately 17 minutes and 40 seconds. However, although we asked WinX to merge all titles, it created a separate file for each one instead. On task completion, the tool immediately exited.

The Good

OS compatibility extends to Windows 8/8.1 (32- and 64-bit). The app is cross-platform (Windows, Mac OS X), extremely easy to handle, includes help documentation for less experienced users, and supports multiple UI languages.

Although there is a button for deselecting all DVD titles, the app does not implement another button for selecting them.

WinX features a lengthy list of output profiles, multiple threads, several video editing options and automated post-task actions, together with configurable audio and video settings.

The audio and video quality after conversion is quite good.

The Bad

The application failed in its attempt to clone the DVD to an ISO image or folder in our evaluation.

The time shown during conversion (elapsed, remaining) tracks the movie's converted time, not the task duration.

Considering its full price, we expected richer features integrated into WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, such as applicable video filters as well as the possibility of creating and saving new output profiles with customized audio and video settings.

The Truth

All in all, WinX DVD Ripper Platinum delivers quality video in reasonable time. It is extremely easy to handle, but users shouldn't expect many options to play with. There is also a free edition available called WinX DVD Ripper.
