Virtualized XP on a removable drive

Virtualization is the next best thing when it comes to testing without affecting the real operating system. There are plenty of managers for multiple virtual machines and the freebie basket includes Microsoft's Virtual PC and Virtual Box, two of the best on the market and each bringing its own advantages.

If Bart's PE Builder is for creating a live Windows, MojoPac may seem a bit lighter as it deals with virtualizing Windows XP. But the device it is all run from does not differ at all. In this case the procedure is a whole lot simpler and any user could do it with absolutely no problems.

What MojoPac has to offer is practically a virtual machine for Windows XP only. It will run just on Windows XP hosts (32-bit) and provide you with all the functionality of the operating system, all from a removable drive (it can be anything from a USB stick or iPod to an MP3 player). The key to a good experience consists in the speediness of the drive you install it on and when choosing the volume you want to put it on the application will complete a performance assessment so that you know exactly how well the emulation will do.

Just like in any virtual machine, what you do in an emulated environment stays there and it is perfectly insulated from the host machine, thus giving you the possibility to do all the testing you want without affecting the real OS. You can switch to the host OS at any time and also have access to all the volumes available on the real computer.

The application comes in handy when testing some piece of software. Or when you are on the go and have to use different computers but need your own applications and settings. Simply plug in the MojoPac'ed storage device, type in your login credentials and your customized virtual XP is ready to assist you.

MojoPac allows you to install applications in the virtual environment and use them on any XP system you find, preserving your own settings. This turns into a convenient solution for making portable software that is otherwise not built for travel purposes, thus making for a good alternative to carrying a laptop around.
